CIA report points to 44th president's role in the Russia hoax

OPINION:
Hillary Clinton wasn’t the only one engaged in dirty tricks against then candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election. An analysis released last week by the Central Intelligence Agency admits the intelligence community’s December 2016 assessment of Russian interference in the election was the product of political manipulation.
On Dec. 6 that year, President Barack Obama ordered his intelligence team — then-CIA Director John Brennan, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and FBI Director James Comey — to create the highly confidential paper that concluded Vladimir Putin aspired to help Mr. Trump become president. Three days later, this “top secret” appraisal appeared in the pages of the New York Times and Washington Post.
“All the world can now see the truth: Brennan, Clapper and Comey manipulated intelligence and silenced career professionals — all to get Trump,” CIA Director John Ratcliffe wrote on X.
The CIA staff who penned this lessons-learned review weren’t quite that direct. Their evaluation conceded that the intelligence heads “jammed” the process and ignored contrary evidence to complete work in a matter of days. The rushed report’s procedural failings included the “lack of transparency on source uncertainty” and “the inclusion of unsubstantiated Steele Dossier material.”
For a full picture, it’s necessary to supplement Langley’s account with a bit of history. The dossier is the fraudulent concoction Mrs. Clinton’s campaign circulated to journalists eager to smear the GOP candidate. When voters elected a bruised Mr. Trump anyway, Mr. Obama’s outgoing intelligence team decided to give the government’s imprimatur to Mrs. Clinton’s fable.
Once pliable reporters relayed the “high confidence” America’s top spies had about Russia promoting Mr. Trump, gullible GOP senators began repeating this supposition as fact. It raised a bipartisan cloud of doubt over the new administration, opening the door to impeachment.
Text messages exchanged by senior G-men implicate Mr. Obama in pre-election perfidy. In September 2016, then-FBI lawyer Lisa Page tasked then-counterintelligence chief Peter Strzok with drafting talking points about the Russia operation for Mr. Comey, because “potus wants to know everything we’re doing.” POTUS at the time referred to Mr. Obama.
Mr. Strzok also quoted an official whose identity remains redacted, saying, “the White House is running this.” After nearly a decade, there’s no reason to continue hiding relevant public records. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rick Crawford is among those frustrated with the slow pace of accountability.
