How the New York Times ruined itself in the Trump era

With the revelation this week of the author of that notorious "Anonymous" op-ed in the New York Times, it's settled: The paper of record is broken.
When the New York Times published that piece back in September 2018, it described the author as a "senior official in the Trump administration." Now, we know that "senior official" was Miles Taylor, a CNN contributor who at the time of the op-ed was an underling to the underling of the secretary of Homeland Security.
In a news article following Taylor's decision to come forward, the New York Times boosted his authority by describing him as "frequently in meetings with top White House officials and sometimes with the president." Taylor, the New York Times said, "had access to the decision-making meetings in the department and with other agencies about a range of topics such as immigration, cybersecurity, terrorism and border security."
He was "frequently in meetings!" He had "access!"

The memos went from Comey to a friend who then went to the New York Times to read them to a reporter. The reporter did not even have the notes firsthand, only what was read to them by the secondhand source.
The "paper of record" became more like the paper of remember — if you can.
Trump didn't break the New York Times. The paper has collapsed on its own.
