When Hillary Clinton endorsed Biden during an online chat, all anyone could talk about was whether he nodded off for an agonizing few seconds and appeared to drift into dreamland.

Hillary Clinton’s campaign anthem was “Fight Song.” What will Joe Biden’s be? “All by Myself”? “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”? The way things are going Biden’s acceptance speech at the Democratic convention is going to be the first one ever delivered via message in a bottle.

The absolute best Joe Biden can hope for is that people remember he is not Trump and that he was Obama’s vice president. But running as a “not Trump” candidate is hardly a way to win.

The problem with this approach is that when the candidate looks like his last job was as an exhibit at Madame Tussauds, there’s only so much you can do to make him look lifelike. The other day, when the big news was supposed to be that Hillary Clinton was endorsing Uncle Joe during an online chat, instead all anyone could talk about was whether Biden nodded off for the agonizing few seconds when his eyes closed, his head dropped and he appeared to drift into dreamland. Next time, watch carefully for the scotch tape his handlers use to paste his eyelids open. Fun fact: On election day Biden will be exactly as old as Ronald Reagan was on his last day in office — 77 years, 11 months, and 14 days.

Don’t expect to hear a whole lot about that in the media, though. That’s the one thing the propped-up remains of Bernie didn’t have in the movie: billions of dollars worth of Very Serious Journalists telling everyone he’s just fine.
