Politico sees a clever Republican conspiracy behind Democrats' ludicrous leap leftward

The Democratic Party is moving further to the Left, as even its supposedly moderate 2020 primary candidates have pledged to ban “semiautomatic weapons" and fossil fuel consumption.
For Politico, however, the story here is not so much the Democratic Party’s hard lurch to the far Left. The real story is that Democrats may be unwittingly playing right into the Republican Party’s devious “culture war trap.” Poor Democrats! Conniving Republicans!
“Democrats bite on burgers and straws — and Republicans feast,” reads a headline published last week by Politico.
This may be the most masterful formulation of the “GOP pounce” trope that has been published in a long while. It may even be the most masterful of the entire Trump presidency. It is the Mona Lisa of the “Republicans seize” cliché.
