White Island volcano eruption: Five dead, others missing or critically injured in Bay of Plenty
Twenty-four Australians were reportedly among up to 50 people on White Island in New Zealand today when a volcano erupted, killing at least five people.

New Zealand police do not believe any survivors will be found on White Island, meaning the death toll from the volcanic eruption could be up to 32.
Police have confirmed at least five people are dead after 23 people were taken off the island following the eruption on Monday afternoon.
But local media reports suggest up to 27 people may still be on the island.
In a statement released late on Monday night, police said they had conducted “a number of aerial reconnaissance flights over the island” but had not detected any signs of life.
“Police believe that anyone who could have been taken from the island alive was rescued at the time of the evacuation,” the statement said.
“Based on the information we have, we do not believe there are any survivors on the island.
