These three invented American traditions — and one lived to regret it

American traditions like our flag, anthem and holidays are often thought of as ingrained in our history, as if they sprung fully formed on the day of our nation’s birth.
But every tradition has a human story behind it, often involving conflict and disagreement and spurred on by an unlikely creator, according to Jack David Eller, author of the new book, “Inventing American Tradition: From the Mayflower to Cinco de Mayo,” (Reaktion Books), out now.
“Many people contribute to a tradition, for many (often extremely partisan) reasons,” Eller writes, “and there is almost always a struggle.”
