Massacres must be stopped

What is the site of the most complete ruins of the Roman empire is now the site of the ruin of human sanity. The killing in Syria’s famous township of Palmyra is something out of a bizarre movie dedicated to mindless violence. To kill in cold blood over 400 people takes even terrorism as a form of violence into a spiral that defies all logic.

One of the reasons why death squads get away with massacres is global fatigue. Between the media and the masses of our world these deaths become cruelly faceless and enter the murky world of statistics. The agony and the pain of the endless bloodshed is muted.

And there is no perfect solution. This is not a mathematical problem and urban enclaves of extremists are very difficult to eliminate. The coalition is also hampered in its options by the proximity to civilian populations and the possible spike in collateral damage. It is also easy to critique the air campaign but while aerial strikes can target camps and strongholds they are severely limited in their impact because even with real time intel how do you separate the fighters from the civilians?

Whether it is Syria or the Yemen crisis the US led forces have to consider the possibility along with their allies of placing boots on the ground. It is not an easy decision to make and once made it is a long and arduous process to withdraw since there is never a right time. History has shown that from the days of Cambodia and Vietnam through Kosova, Afghanistan and Somalia. The fear is that such a commitment is not only a logistical mountain but there is pressure on the home front, there are more casualties and there is no guarantee of any resolution.

The other major fallout is the refugee problem that increases exponentially and becomes an exhausting dimension for the government and its supporters.

But the problem lies in the fact that something has to be done. The Daesh have taken Ramadi and that is a matter of great concern as it could form a pincer movement with Fallujah and bring the extremists closer to Baghdad.

And Palmyra in Syria is cheek by jowl with the oil pipelines on the road to Damascus.

These so called ‘victories’ are intrinsically worrying because they become a rallying point for more youth who feel they should be on what they wrongly believe is the winning side. With each foray and intrusion recruitment by force or by will becomes simpler.

In these circumstances it is a dim possibility to bring factions to the negotiating table and it might just become necessary to literally bite the bullet and look at a ground offensive as the only possibility to block the advance.
