How did scientists employ world first data analysis to confirm what most had feared?


The unprecedented combination of technology and international cooperation is slowly helping to piece together how the baffling MH370 mystery unfolded.

"What they then did, for the first time ever, is analyse the radio wave contraction, expansion, time to get to the satellite,” Aviation Expert Geoffery Thomas said.

“They took that data, they then analysed similar data off planes flying on the moment on known tracks and did the calculation, this is where it is."

Thomas believes some of the debris spotted by French, Chinese and Australian search teams must be from the Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 plane.

The confirmation of the plane’s trajectory has triggered a flood of oceanographers and salvage masters looking to come to Perth to help find the plane and recover its two black boxes.

Deep-sea diver Mike McDowell has descended to the Titanic five times, and was also a key member of the team that located Air France Flight 447 in 2001 after a two-year search in the Atlantic.

“The giant, shifting current of the Southern Indian Ocean will likely increase the final resting area of the aircraft,” he said.

Oceanographer Erik van Sebille said even if the black box of MH370 is recovered, the cockpit voice recorder only saves the final two hours of conversation in flight.

But Thomas is not so confident the black boxes will be recovered.

"The information we really want is at the 50 minute mark of the flight, where the plane turned to the left and descended,” he said.

“That's the part we want, and that's the part we'll never get."
