Demonstrators supporting people standing up against the regime in Syria have marched through the heart of London's Arab community.

The march, organised by Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain, united around 1,000-1,200 Muslims who oppose the regime of President Bashar Assad in Syria, and finished at the Syrian Embassy.

Making their way down Edgware Road, past Marble Arch, and down Park Lane, the enthusiasm of the protesters was not dampened by heavy rain as they approached the Syrian Embassy in Belgrave Square.

Holding posters with messages including 'O Syrian army support the people not the tyrant' and 'Bashar Al-Assad Baby Killer', the all-male protest resulted in some delays for road users along the route.

In front of the Embassy building, protesters beat posters of Assad with running shoes and flip-flops, with one poster being set alight before protest organisers called for the flames to be put out.

With a heavy police presence in the area, some demonstrators covered their faces with scarves, which protest organisers tried to stop by walking along the perimeters and asking people to remove the face coverings.

Speaking about the demonstration, Taji Mustafa, spokesman of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Britain, said: "The demonstrators were showing their support for those bravely rising up against the tyrannical Syrian regime and calling for the removal of the corrupt and oppressive system ruling over the people.

"They also opposed Western interference in the Muslim world, where the Assad regime has been supported for decades.

"They also opposed attempts to inflame sectarian tensions - which plays into the hands of this brutal regime. They called upon the sincere people in the armed forces to withdraw their support from the Assad regime, and to support the establishment of a system that ensures accountability, transparency and justice for all the people - the Islamic Khilafah (Caliphate) state."

Protesters shouted 'Free, free Syria' along the route and waved Syrian flags, while other posters said 'Bashar Al-Assad-the killer of Muslims' and 'Go Bashar and take your gang with you'. The demonstration passed off peacefully.
