Ghosts Of WWII: France Lashes Out At World Leader For Dropping Reality Check On Trump

France is big mad that a key world leader gave them the skinny: in a war against, say, Russia, the French and other European nations would get absolutely steamrolled without America’s support.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte — who’s also a fan of President Donald Trump in some respects, at least relative to his European counterparts — said Monday that without U.S. support, NATO isn’t really up to the task of defending Europe.
“If anyone thinks here again that the European Union, or Europe as a whole, can defend itself without the US, keep on dreaming. You can’t. We can’t. We need each other,” Rutte said, addressing the European Parliament in Brussels.
He also dropped a harsh but much-needed reality check: if NATO countries want to protect themselves without America’s help, they’d better get serious on defense spending; 10% of the budget, at least, Rutte said. They would also need to build their own nuclear weapons, which would be time-consuming and costly.
