Hong Kong Protester Shot by Police as National Day Demonstrations Descend Into Widespread Violence

A day of bitter fighting marks the worst and most widespread violence to hit the city in more than half a century

HONG KONG—A police officer shot a protester in the chest during a day of bitter fighting here that marked the worst and most widespread violence to hit the city in more than half a century.

The officer pulled his pistol and fired in self-defense, a police spokeswoman said on Tuesday. One video showed the officer shooting at close range after the protester charged with a metal bar.
