EDGARTOWN: Just days after former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton offered a stinging critique of President Barack Obama’s Syria policy, she and former President Clinton will party with Obama and the first lady on Martha’s Vineyard.
The current and last Democratic first families will both attend a party on Wednesday night at the Martha’s Vineyard home of Democratic fundraiser Vernon Jordan. The Obamas are in the opening days of a two-week vacation on the Massachusetts island, while Clinton will be signing copies of her memoir at a local bookstore.
“The President and First Lady have accepted an offer to attend a social gathering at the home of Vernon Jordan on Wednesday evening,” a White House official said. “The President and First Lady are very much looking forward to the occasion and seeing Former Secretary Clinton.”
Hillary, in the interview, was contrasting her vision for America’s role in the world with President Barack Obama’s ahead of a possible 2016 White House bid, after working to carry out Obama’s foreign policy mission for four years as secretary of state.
However, Republicans say she won’t be able to escape that she carried out Obama’s foreign policy for his first term without public complaint.
“Hillary Clinton spent four years executing Barack Obama’s foreign policy, and in year five of Obama’s term it’s ridiculous for Hillary to try to swindle voters into thinking what’s happening around the world isn’t a product of Obama-Hillary diplomacy,” Republican National Committee spokesperson Kirsten Kukowski said in response to Clinton’s interview.
Clinton drew the sharpest distinctions yet from Obama in a rebuke of his cautious approach to global crises.
“Great nations need organising principles, and ‘don’t do stupid stuff’ is not an organising principle,” Clinton said in a weekend magazine interview, referring to a version of the phrase Obama and his advisers have used privately to describe his approach to foreign policy.
Asked for her organising principle, she replied: “Peace, progress and prosperity. This worked for a very long time.” Clinton wrapped her critiques in expressions of respect for the president and sympathy for the tough global decisions he grapples with from the Oval Office.
