WASHINGTON— A pro-Syrian-government group temporarily redirected links in tweets by President Barack Obama’s former campaign organization to a video titled “Syria Facing Terrorism.”

According to an official with Organizing for Action, a group that supports the president, the Syrian Electronic Army was able to hack a service that helps OFA shorten the links it uses on its main Twitter account, @barackobama. The service, run by a third-party vendor, turns long Internet links into an “OFA.BO” format that it then uses in its tweets.

The hackers didn’t penetrate Mr. Obama’s actual Twitter account, Twitter officials said. But the Twitter officials confirmed the breach of the link-shortening service and said the micro-blogging company, set to go public this fall, had been in touch with OFA.

The Syrian Electronic Army boasted about the disruption and also about hacking into the email of some OFA staffers.

An OFA official declined to comment on whether the hackers breached OFA email accounts or how they gained access to the link-shortener. In the past, the Syrian Electronic Army has broken into systems by sending fraudulent emails to target company employees. (“You must watch this video!”) If the employee clicks on the link, they can inadvertently allow hackers into the system.

“Thanks to our operation, Twitter now blocks Obama’s dangerous propaganda links,” read a message on a Twitter account believed to be run by the Syrian Electronic Army.

As of Monday afternoon, the links associated with @barackobama were no longer directing people to the pro-Syrian government video. While OFA’s Twitter account carries the president’s name and supports his message, the president rarely sends tweets out personal messages via that account.

The Syrian Electronic Army supports the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and has been behind a wave of attacks on websites including that of the New York Times, the Huffington Post, Twitter and the Onion, the satirical news service. It’s unclear though how many of its troops actually are based in Syria.

Mr. Obama has criticized the Syrian government for attacks against rebels and civilians, and called for Mr. Assad to step down.
