Mysterious Light Seen Over Middle East Coincides With Russian Missile Launch

A glowing celestial pinwheel spun in the night sky over the Middle East on Thursday night, grabbing attention across the region and fueling speculation about the possible origin of the unexplained phenomenon.

Quickly dubbed the Mideast U.F.O., the bizarre apparition was captured in a flurry of videos and images posted from a wide variety of locations. Many showed a focused cone of light hanging in the darkness before slowly blurring, expanding and spiraling into a shape resembling a giant cosmic lawn ornament.

One video, said to have been recorded in the Syrian town of Deir ez-Zor, showed the phenomenon clearly:

“Suddenly, coming from the north, we saw a giant cone of light open up in the sky in what look to be the sky above Mt. Hermon and Har Dov,” said one witness in Israel who snapped a photo and described what he saw to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. “It was crazy, and after 15 seconds it began spinning light a florescent spiral, which dispersed into a giant plume of smoke blanketing the entire mountain.”

The news site YNet reported that police phone lines in Israel, Armenia and Lebanon were flooded with calls about the odd light, which was seen there around 8:45 p.m. on Thursday. Speculation swirled along with the light as sightings were also reported in Jordan and Azerbaijan and eventually settled on a terrestrial explanation: a Russian intercontinental ballistic missile.

The Russian news agency Interfax reported that one such missile, an RS-12M, had been launched as part of a test on Thursday. The missile traveled from the southern Astrakhan region of Russia across roughly 1,000 miles to a range in Kazakhstan “with projected accuracy,” a defense ministry spokesman told the news agency, describing the test as successful.

Russia’s state-owned Ria Novosti news agency said the sightings “could be” of a missile being tested.

As The Huffington Post’s Craig Kanalley observed, the sky phenomenon resembled similar sightings over Norway in 2009 that were later attributed to a failed Russian ballistic missile test.

Despite the reported success of the Russian missile test on Thursday, an Israeli expert told YNet that he suspected it had in fact failed. “It most likely spun out of control and its remnants and the fuel was what people saw,” said Dr. Yigal Pat-El, chairman of the Israeli Astronomical Association. “It reached a height of 200-300 kilometers and that’s why it was seen from so many locations.”
