What began as vigils for the students killed when Iran’s Revolutionary Guard mistakenly shot down an airliner turned into large anti-government protests Saturday, with thousands of students chanting “Death to Liars!” and calling for the resignation of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“F–k you & your mistake!” said a banner held up by students at Amir Kabir University that showed the names and photos of 16 students who died when Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 went down shortly after takeoff from Tehran’s airport, killing all 176 people aboard.

Iran for days claimed that a technical failure caused the crash, before admitting on Saturday that its own surface-to-air missiles brought the plane down. In admitting that it mistakenly shot the plane down, Iranian officials generated as much anger as they dispelled.

The anger was visible among the thousands of protesters, who shouted “Bisharaf!” a Farsi word for “dishonorable,” one of the worst insults in the culture.

They also chanted for the Revolutionary Guards to “Let go of the country!” and referring to the top general killed last week by the US, shouted “Soleimani was a murderer, his leader is too!”

“Death to the dictator!” and “All these years of crimes, down with the velayat!” a word that refers to the mullahs’ regime, were also chanted by the crowds.

Protests were held at three other universities in Tehran as well.

As night fell, with thousands of people in the streets, security forces in riot gear descended and used tear gas to disperse the crowds. Online videos showed some protesters being beaten by security forces as well.

“Shame on you, shame on you!” the crowds chanted as they dispersed. “No fear! We’re all together!”
