BEIRUT -- A group of Syrian rebel brigades, including an affiliate of al-Qaida, seized a large oil and gas field from government forces Saturday, opposition activists said, further depriving the government of President Bashar Assad of the resources it needs to remain solvent.
Videos posted online showed scores of black-clad rebels walking through a large arch over an entrance to the Omar oil field, rummaging through its buildings and standing atop tanks.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a number of rebel brigades had seized the area after an overnight battle and the withdrawal of government troops.
Another roof collapse
RIGA, Latvia -- A massive third section of the roof at a Latvian supermarket, where at least 54 people were killed, fell Saturday as emergency workers searched nearby rubble for more victims.
Though no one was injured, officials suspended the effort as they considered the dangers of continuing the search in the unstable building.
Investigators are looking at faulty construction or work on the roof's grass- and gravel-covered surface as the potential cause of the initial collapse in the crowded supermarket on Thursday.
Protest blocks NATO road
PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- Thousands of people protesting U.S. drone strikes blocked a road in northwest Pakistan on Saturday used to truck NATO troop supplies and equipment in and out of Afghanistan, the latest sign of rising tension caused by the attacks.
The protest, led by Pakistani politician and cricket star Imran Khan, had more symbolic value than practical impact as there is normally little NATO supply traffic on the road on Saturdays.
Female slaves began in cult
LONDON -- New details emerged Saturday in the bizarre case of three suspected female slaves allegedly held for 30 years, with police indicating the unusual household arrangement started as a collective of people with shared political beliefs.
While much of the case is still a mystery, British police said the two suspects -- a man and a woman from India and Tanzania -- bonded with two of the reported victims because of commonly held political views and lived with them in a communal situation, apparently in the Brixton area of south London.
Presidential race shows tie
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras -- The last thing Honduras needs is a presidential election that's a draw. If polls are accurate, today's vote could fail to produce a clear winner.
The election pits Xiomara Castro, whose husband Manuel Zelaya was overthrown in a military-backed coup, against Juan Orlando Hernandez, the candidate of the ruling conservative National Party.
Polls show the two in a statistical tie.
Shark attacks, kills surfer
PERTH, Australia -- A 35-year-old surfer was fatally mauled by a shark Saturday off a notorious stretch of Australia's west coast, police said.
The shark "bounced off the board" of one surfer "before attacking the other male" off a beach near Gracetown, said Western Australia state police Sgt. Norm Giocas.
The victim, whose identity was known but not immediately released while police notified relatives, died instantly from massive injuries, Sgt. Giocas said, adding that beachgoers brought his body ashore.
