Syrian rebels attack Damascus airport in battle against regime

The forces bent on toppling the Assad regime after a bloody 21-month conflict declared the airport a “legitimate target” as they hoped to cut off supplies coming through the facility to the Syrian military.

People gather in front of a building damaged by what Syria's national news agency SANA says is a bomb explosion in the Mazeh 86 area in Damascus, in this December 6, 2012.

Syrian rebels targeted Damascus International Airport as Secretary of State Clinton reiterated U.S. support Friday for the ouster of President Bashar Assad.

The forces bent on toppling the Assad regime after a bloody 21-month conflict declared the airport a “legitimate target” as they hoped to cut off supplies coming through the facility to the Syrian military.

Fighting in the area around the Syrian capital’s airport grew fiercer, forcing a shutdown of the airport road for the second time in a week.

Commercial flights were already canceled as the rebel forces attempted to stem weapons deliveries from Russian and Iran.

The Syrian insurgents also believe Assad is massing troops of elite fighters and military transport planes at the airport. Civilians were urged to steer clear of the facility outside the city of 1.7 million.

“It will be a moral victory, to say the least,” one rebel fighter said about seizing the transportation hub.

Clinton, speaking after Thursday’s surprise talks with the Russians and UN peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, said the U.S. would still insist on Assad’s ouster as part of any Syrian political transition.

Russia disagrees with that position, instead offering support for its closest Arab ally.

Clinton called the Belfast sitdown “an important meeting, but just the beginning. I don’t think anyone believes there was some great breakthrough.”

The latest round of violence comes amid fears that Assad will use chemical weapons, an accusation he denies.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the use of chemical weapons would be an “outrageous crime” against humanity.

“The slaughter in Syria must stop,” Ban said. “The military path is a dead end. It only fills the streets with more blood.”

More than 30 people were killed in Damascus on Friday, including at least one child. The civil war has claimed the lives of more than 40,000 people.
