Libya: rebels 'enter gates of Sirte'

Libyan rebel forces launched a three-pronged attack on the last remaining pro-Gaddafi stronghold on the country's northern coastal strip on Thursday, saying they had entered the gates of Sirte.

The Misurata Military Council, whose fighters are spearheading the attack, said its forces had reached the Gharbiyat bridge inside the south-western edge of the city.

"I confirm our forces are in Sirte. It is a big force," a spokesman told reporters near the front line. "There is still resistance but our fighters will be able to overcome it."

Sirte is Col Muammar Gaddafi's birthplace, and he built it up as a showpiece city. It has fiercely resisted a long siege by rebel forces, and rejected offers to surrender peacefully in return for recognition of basic rights.

Rebel forces were also last night threatening to attack Bani Walid, the other main northern city, south-east of Tripoli, which is still in former regime hands. "We shall take it tonight, hopefully," Mahmoud Shammam, media spokesman on the National Transitional Council, told The Daily Telegraph.

The fierce continuing fighting is a reminder even as David Cameron and the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, arrived in Libya that much fighting remains. Much of the southern desert, including the city of Sirte and the borders with Niger and Algeria are either in Gaddafi hands or disputed.

"Let us be clear – this is not finished, this is not done, this is not over," Mr Cameron said. "Gaddafi is still at large. We must make sure this work is completed."

A convoy of 900 armoured pickups moved on Sirte yesterday morning, splitting into sections for the attack. But at least one wing was held up after coming under heavy artillery fire.
