As the number of coronavirus cases in Australia passes 160, there are growing questions about when to shut down sporting events and other mass gatherings.
University of Sydney Professor Robert Booy says the best-case scenario is just 20 per cent of people getting COVID-19.
The worst-case scenario is that half the population comes down with the virus.
“The least we could hope for is 20 per cent, people are predicting as much as 50 per cent to 60 per cent and we need to do as much as we can by way of mitigation to protect our vulnerable population,” Prof Booy said yesterday.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant told a budget estimates hearing that the numbers of people requiring intensive care beds would double at the peak of the epidemic.
