Al Qaeda confidant turned CIA informant Morten Storm says Australian jihadists should be banned from coming home

A former Danish bikie who became an Al Qaeda jihadist and then turned CIA informant has warned Australia to stop home-grown terrorists from returning home.

"This is a war. These people have declared war against us. We are in a war… I think we should not allow them to come back," Morten Storm told 7.30.

And to do that, he says their passports should be cancelled.

"The Australian passport is for them a tool to become a terrorist," he said.

A Danish national, Mr Storm has had a colourful history, to say the least.

He was a violent teenager and drifted into bikie gangs before converting to Islam and becoming a jihadist.

"At a very young age I felt neglected by my parents," he said of his childhood.

"Islam was a structure, a model way of life for me to follow, which I needed so badly."

After his conversion, he travelled frequently to Yemen, where he fell under the spell of American-born preacher and Al Qaeda militant Anwar al-Awlaki.

Mr Storm was soon convinced to take up violent jihad.

He built a strong relationship with Awlaki and became a trusted confidant and messenger for the Al Qaeda kingpin.

Mr Storm prepared to join the fight raging in Somalia, but at the last minute those plans were thwarted.

It was a pivotal moment, and he began to question his faith.

"I lost the chance to fight jihad, which was for me [like] losing the World Cup final," he said.

"I couldn't believe that Allah would, 50,000 years before I was created, decide for me not to go to jihad when that is the best thing you can do."

As quickly as he embraced radical Islam, Mr Storm abandoned it.

He initiated a meeting with a Danish intelligence agent and told them: "I am not a Muslim. I want to help you fight the terrorists."

And so began the transformation.

The road from jihadist to informer

Mr Storm kept up the appearances of being a married Muslim man, raising Muslim children – all the while working for Danish, British and US intelligence.

They used Mr Storm and his friendship with Awlaki to try and capture the Al Qaeda leader in Yemen.

Mr Storm said it was his work that ultimately led to Awlaki's assassination in 2011.

His relationship with his intelligence bosses eventually soured, in particular, he said, after they failed to properly credit and reward him when Awlaki was killed.

But Mr Storm is confident of his role in thwarting the jihadi terror network.

"I contributed to having some of the biggest terrorists removed from the face of the Earth," he said.

"Many, many people, evil people, have been imprisoned because of my work.

"At the end of the day we have a recording of the CIA, admitting that I played the highest role."

Mr Storm believed the same factors that drew him to violent jihad were today capturing the minds of young Australians, like Sydney teenager Abdullah Elmir, who railed against the West in a recent Islamic State propaganda video.

He said such videos were dangerous.

"They are extremely important propaganda tools, and I hope that our governments will consider to ban them," Mr Storm said.

"These people (like Elmir) get emotionally involved and motivated.

"They see how easily ISIS is taking over villages and slaughtering the enemies, then they say, 'Oh, I want to be part of that' and they feel that it's their religious duty to do that.

"They are not Australians anymore – that is what they believe.

"They believe now they are part of the Islamic Ummah, the Islamic nation – this is their citizenship now."
