An explosion at the Boston Marathon near Coply Square

Two people have been killed and at least 23 injured after two explosions ripped through the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

TV footage showed streets littered with debris and blood, with paramedics carrying stretchers.

Boston Police said there were "simultaneous explosions" near the finish line. There are reports that more than 100 people have been injured.

Dozens of bloodied people have been taken from the scene on stretchers and in wheelchairs.

The explosions occurred as thousands of runners finished the marathon, with crowds watching and cheering, about three hours after the winners crossed the finish line.

Boston is in lockdown as police hunt for explosive devices and US president Barack Obama has vowed to bring those responsible for the blasts to justice.

DFAT says it is not aware of any Australians being hurt.

8:12am: Obama says the full resources of the federal government will be made available and vows to track down those responsible for the explosions.

"We still do not know who did this, or why, and people shouldn't jump to conclusions before we have all the facts.

"But, make no mistake, we will get to the bottom of this and we will find out who did this, we will find out why they did this.

"Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice."

The president departs without taking any questions from reporters.

8:10am: Barack Obama is speaking now: He says security is being increased around the country.

8:02am: Boston Police chief Ed Davis now says the incident at the JFK Library "was actually an incendiary device or fire" and police are not sure if there is a link to the marathon blasts.

He says reports that a suspect is in custody are "untrue".

A 15-block area around where the explosions happened will be sealed off for at least 24 hours.

The city is awash with runners and tourists and with many buildings in lockdown, many of them have no place to go to. Mobile phone networks have been closed down to prevent any remote detonations and the city's airport has been closed down.

If you see a runner, ask if you can help. Temp is dropping and a lot of out-of-towners have nowhere to go.
