US military intervention on the table for Venezuela

A military intervention to oust Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro remains “a very serious option” for the United States, according to President Trump’s national security team.
“Obviously, that’s a result that no one would like to see but clearly one that is seriously considered as events unfold,” a senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters Friday evening.
President Trump’s team has wielded that threat to deter any attack by Maduro loyalists on Juan Guaidó, the opposition lawmaker whom the U.S. and other Western democracies recognized as Venezuela’s legitimate interim president in January. Maduro has defied that pressure by retaining control of the military and loyalty of "colectivos," the paramilitary gangs that blocked the U.S. delivery of humanitarian aid to the country in February.
“We hope that the military will uphold its constitutional duty to protect the Venezuelan people from these illegal terrorist groups known as the colectivos which Maduro is increasingly dependent on,” the senior administration official said.
That unofficial labeling of the colectivos as “terrorists” appears to be part of a broader effort in U.S. tactics against Maduro. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., wants President Trump to put both the Maduro regime and the colectivos on the official list of foreign terrorist organizations, alongside groups such as ISIS and al Qaeda.
“The truth is the Maduro regime built up this network of colectivos as its own private security force to protect its grip on power and violently resist any effort to dislodge it from power,” Rubio said.

Trump skipping ‘boring’ correspondents’ dinner again

President Trump on Friday said he’ll once again boycott the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner — calling it “boring” and “negative” — and will hold a rally instead.
“I’m going to hold a rally, because the dinner is so boring and so negative,” Trump told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House.
“I like positive things,” he added as he announced that he will skip the black-tie event, where presidents traditionally rub shoulders with journalists, for the third time.
The dinner, which will be held April 27 at the Washington Hilton, will feature no comedian this year after Michelle Wolf last year verbally attacked White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

President Trump on Friday visited the southern border amid an escalating immigration crisis, saying that “our country is full” and warning potential migrants thinking about crossing into the U.S. that this country "can’t take you anymore.”
“Whether it’s asylum, whether it’s anything you want, it’s illegal immigration, can’t take you anymore. Our country is full, our area is full, the sector is full, can’t take you anymore. I’m sorry, can’t happen, so turn around -- that’s the way it is,” he said at a roundtable in Calexico, Calif., with law enforcement and immigration officials.

US adds 196,000 jobs as unemployment rate remains lowest in decades

WASHINGTON — Hiring rebounded in March as U.S. employers added a solid 196,000 jobs, up sharply from February’s scant gain and evidence that many businesses still want to hire despite signs that the economy is slowing.
The unemployment rate remained at 3.8%, near the lowest level in almost 50 years, the Labor Department reported Friday.
Wage growth slowed a bit in March, with average hourly pay increasing 3.2% from a year earlier. That was down from February’s year-over-year gain of 3.4%, which was the best in a decade.

Justice Department issues rare public statement defending Barr's summary of Mueller report findings
Shortly before Special Counsel Robert Mueller filed his report on the Russia investigation last month, Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., alerted Attorney General Bill Barr to what they described as the "selective" use of emails in Mueller court filings -- as well as potential “improper political influence, misconduct, and mismanagement” in the FBI's original Russia probe.
In a March 8 letter, Grassley and Graham referred Barr to a letter sent to Mueller in late 2017 that alleged his investigators had cherry-picked details from emails to include in court documents, urging him to review the materials. They also notified him that they had asked DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz a year earlier to review the original FBI probe.

PARIS – Two key American officials — U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen — are skipping meetings in France this week as the Group of Seven countries gather to try to find solutions to world security challenges.
The move raises questions about the G-7's effectiveness at solving some of the international issues it has deemed crucial, including fighting terrorism and human trafficking.
A lunch focusing on migration issues and human trafficking kicked off the G-7 interior ministers' meetings Thursday in Paris. France, which took over the G-7's presidency in January, is hosting the two-day meeting, which overlaps with a summit of G-7 foreign ministers Friday and Saturday in the French Atlantic resort of Dinard.
U.S. President Donald Trump has made no secret of his disdain for the G-7, especially since Russia was pushed out of the gathering of major world economies after its annexation of Crimea in 2014. In addition to the U.S., the G-7 includes France, Canada, Japan, Germany, Italy and the U.K.
Pompeo is in Washington this week, far from French shores, hosting NATO's foreign ministers to mark the alliance's 70th anniversary. Nielsen is staying behind to deal with domestic border issues.

Christchurch terrorist charged with 50 murders
The Australian man arrested over a terror attack on two mosques in New Zealand will undergo mental health tests before his case proceeds.
Three weeks on from the shootings that killed 50, Brenton Tarrant, 28, appeared today via videolink at the High Court at Christchurch, where 50 counts of murder and 39 of attempted murder were laid.
A silent and largely motionless Tarrant appeared on a large screen in the courtroom, a small cell showing in the background.
The courtroom’s public gallery was packed by dozens of friends and families of the victims, some who stared quietly at the defendant throughout.
During the half-hour hearing Justice Cameron Mander ordered Tarrant undergo two assessments to determine whether he may be mentally impaired, legally insane or fit to stand trial.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s final report found no evidence of collusion between the Trump team and Russians that influenced the 2016 election. Also, no evidence of obstruction of justice. Witnesses were harassed for the past two years to further the Democrats’ and James Comey’s political agenda. All indictments arising out of the investigation were wholly unrelated to any notion of members of the Trump campaign working with the Russians.
Let me say this plainly: not one single American was charged, indicted, or convicted for conspiring with Russia to influence the 2016 election. Not one.
In an ironic twist, it was recently reported that the Ukrainian Parliament is investigating Ukrainian allies of Hillary Clinton for interfering with the American presidential election of 2016 to help her – this news released the day before the Mueller Report, indicating no evidence of Russian “collusion” or obstruction of justice by then-candidate Trump, was transmitted to the Department of Justice. I wonder why the Ukraine story has been effectively spiked by some media outlets.

Democrats are desperately clinging, with a religious zeal, to their belief that Trump must have done something wrong to become president. Yet it appears that even a Mueller investigative team that consisted of substantial donors to Democrats could not find evidence enough to perpetuate the Democrats’ dream of high crimes and misdemeanors.
Their persecution of this president and his supporters for political ends will come back to haunt them because, at some point, the American people simply will not tolerate unjust motives and attacks that are provable prevarications.
