200 Americans have gone or tried to go to Syria: FBI

WASHINGTON: More than 200 Americans have travelled or attempted to travel to Syria to fight for militants, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) chief James Comey said on Wednesday.
“We continue to identify individuals who seek to join the ranks of foreign fighters... and also homegrown violent extremists who may aspire to attack the United States from within,” Comey told lawmakers on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
The radicalisation of Americans by Daesh is a top concern for the agency, and earlier on Wednesday Comey urged technology companies to allow law enforcement authorities access to encrypted communications to help combat the threat.
Barring law enforcement authorities’ access to encrypted communications would make it easier for Daesh sympathisers to attack the United States, Comey told Senate lawmakers on Wednesday.
The FBI is pushing technology companies to let law enforcement authorities have access to encrypted communications to investigate illegal activities.
Those companies have resisted, arguing that such access would weaken systems against criminals and computer hackers.
Comey has previously criticized Apple Inc and Google Inc for ramping up encryption.
Comey told a US Senate Judiciary Committee hearing that Daesh, is imploring supporters through Twitter to carry out attacks.
Related conversations often take place via end-to-end encryption mobile communications that are unreadable to anyone other than those sending or receiving the messages.
