Kurdish Protesters Occupy Dutch Parliament Over Islamic State

About a hundred Kurdish protesters stormed the Dutch parliament last night to protest against the occupation of the town of Kobani, in Syria’s Kurdish region, by Islamic State forces, Dutch broadcaster RTL said on its website.

The protesters in the Hague are in talks with the police, asking to speak with members of parliament, RTL said. Anouchka van Miltenburg, president of the parliament’s lower house, went to the building to meet with the Kurds, NOS TV reported. The police have a “massive presence,” and the situation is under control, the Hague police said via Twitter. RTL and NOS TV said the protesters are quiet.

A few of the demonstrators who made it into the parliament have since left, and there were about 150 protesters outside the building shortly before 1 a.m. local time, NOS said on its website. The entrance of the parliament is blocked by special police forces, RTL and NOS reported. Police are discussing with Mayor Jozias van Aartsen how to end the occupation of the building.

Islamic State fighters yesterday moved into Kobani, near the Turkish border. They control about half the town, Al Jazeera TV said. Kurdish authorities called on the international community to help avoid a massacre of civilians, the Kurdish Firat news agency reported.

One protester, interviewed by NOS TV, asked why the Netherlands wasn’t sending jets in response to the “serious actions” taking place in Kobani. Some activists shown on NOS carried banners saying “Stop being quiet, support Kobani.”

A number of people have left the building and won’t be arrested, according to NOS.
