US Election 2012: Why 24million Hispanics could hold the key to the result

Forget the soccer mums, the elderly and the Bible belt.

The people who could decide the 2012 presidential election are the Latinos.

The rapid rise in the Hispanic population in the United States means they carry more weight in the November 6 poll than ever before.

More over, they vote in large numbers in the battleground states of Florida, Nevada and Colorado that will determine the result.

That is why both Barack Obama and Republic rival Mitt Romney are spending huge energy - and campaign resources - trying to win over the Spanish speakers.

In 2000 there were fewer than 15million Hispanics eligible to vote, this year there will be more than 24million. And President Obama needs them to win.

The Democrat candidate has the support of 92% of African-Americans but his support among white voters, according a recent poll, is down seven points on four years ago to 36%.

But among Latino voters Mr Obama is leading 70% to 25% over Mr Romney, many of whom have been put off by the Republican's tough stance on illegal immigrants.

Steve Schmidt, John McCain's senior strategist in 2008, said there has been a "collapse of support for Republican candidates by the fastest growing demographic group in the country".

The Obama camp also appreciates the need to win over the Spanish-speaking vote.

"At this stage in the game, if Barack Obama is going to win, there has to be a massive turnout of Latino voters," Democrat pollster Peter Hart told the Wall Street Journal.

He pointed to the large number of Latino voters in the battleground states of Florida, Nevada, Colorado and Virginia.

"They are central because they are in states that are central," he added.
