It's a universal truth that dogs are man's best friend, but they're pretty darn loyal to their own as well.

Case in point: this tear-inducing video, via the website Jezebel, showing a dog, shivering and disoriented, remaining loyally by the side of a stricken fellow canine amid the devastation of the Japanese tsunami.

There will likely be thousands of pets orphaned or involuntarily abandoned due to the catastrophe in Japan.

You can watch the video below:

The video is a stark reminder that, as was the case when Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005, there will likely be thousands of pets orphaned or involuntarily abandoned due to the catastrophe in Japan. If you'd like to help efforts to help these animals, you can find info on doing so here.

UPDATE: CNN and the UK Telegraph have both reported that the dogs have been rescued since the footage aired, and are both receiving veterinary care; the more seriously wounded dog is at a clinic in the city of Mito, while the protective spaniel-type dog is receiving care at a shelter in the same town.

Here is an English translation of the voiceover exchange between the two reporters in the clip (translation courtesy of Toshiyuki Kitamura):

_ We are in Arahama area. Looks like there is a dog. There is a dog. He looks tired and dirty. He must have been caught in the tsunami. He looks very dirty.

_ He has a collar. He must be someone's pet. He has a silver collar. He is shaking. He seems very afraid.

_ Oh, there is another dog. I wonder if he is dead.

_ Where?

_ Right there. There is another dog right next to the one sitting down. He is not moving. I wonder. I wonder if he is alright.

_ The dog is protecting him.

_ Yes. He is protecting the dog. That is why he did not want us to approach them. He was trying to keep us at bay.

_ I can't watch this. This is a very difficult to watch.

_ Oh. Look. He is moving. He is alive. I am so happy to see that he is alive.

_ Yes! Yes! He is alive.

_ He looks to be weakened. We need to them to be rescued soon. We really want them rescued soon.

_ Oh good. He's getting up.

_ It is amazing how they survived the tremendous earthquake and tsunami. It's just amazing that they survived through this all.

_ I think that this is so sweet glad to here they had a happy endings but lets not forget the other animal friends and how important it his to treat animals with respect

_ Now if only more humans were like this.

_ I am glad to see most of you are deceint, compassionate human beings. But a couple of you just really make me pray for the human race when I know that a dog cared enough to stand by and protect its injured friend and we as a whole don't stand by the human race and show nothing short of being only out for ourselves. What a sad sad world we are becoming.

_ That dog is very loyal.

_ Holy crap, that is sad. Dogs have more feelings than most people.Replies (5) .

_ I'm surprised to see that people questioned whether the reporters did something or just left the dogs there. Hasn't anyone watched how the great people of this nation come together and cope with this tragedy? They do it with dignity, integrity, humanity, just to name a few principles. Do you really think they would have left the dogs to fend for themselves? To question them like that is nonetheless, insulting them!

_ This why animals rule!!!!!!!!

_ Hopefully, these two precious "people" can be reunited with their previous owners; if not, then I would hope they both find a home where they can be together. SO sad for everyone involved!! I hope the best for all of the Japanese people, and ALL of their animals. What has happened to the other animals????

_ Nice to see these posting are not about hate or rebellion, nice to see here for a change. When it really comes down to it all, it takes the act of two dogs to bring us all to the emotional state of peace, love, and appreciation. I my self commend all, and not only the dogs have brought tears to my eyes, but humanity as well.

_ This dog is a hero!
