Tehran Chose Terror, U.S. Must Choose Peace Through Strength

This past weekend, senior religious clerics in the Islamic Republic of Iran once again reminded the world exactly who they are.
From positions of religious and political authority, they called for the death of President Donald J. Trump and for the destruction of the United States.
Some commentators will inevitably dismiss these statements as meaningless:
* "They're just old clerics."
* "They don't actually run the country."
* "It's only rhetoric."
Nothing could be further from the truth.
The Islamic Republic is not a normal nation-state where religious leaders are separate from government. The regime is built on clerical rule.
The supreme leader is the nation's highest political and religious authority.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) exists to defend and export that revolutionary ideology.
Together, the clerical establishment and the IRGC exercise enormous influence over the Islamic Republic's military, intelligence services, judiciary, economy, and foreign policy.
When influential figures within that system publicly call for the assassination of an American president and the destruction of the United States, Americans should not shrug.
We should listen.
This is not the language of a government genuinely seeking peace.
