Washington DC lights the National Christmas Tree

With 21 days until Christmas Day, the National Christmas Tree has arrived, been decorated, and lit to celebrate the holiday season.

The 35-foot-tall spruce tree made its journey from the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest in Virginia early Thursday morning, and the event has attracted visitors from all over the country.

Former President Joe Biden's record as commander in chief will forever be defined by Aug. 26, 2021.

That was the catastrophic day in the American withdrawal from Afghanistan that Biden declared should be completed by Sept. 11, 2021 — the 20th anniversary of the al-Qaida terrorist attacks that had triggered the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan.

"U.S. troops as well as forces deployed by our NATO Allies and operational partners, will be out of Afghanistan before we mark the 20th anniversary of that heinous attack on September 11th," Biden said on April 14, 2021.

As American forces prepared to meet Biden's deadline, the Taliban — that Afghan regime that had provided sanctuary to al-Qaida before the 9/11 terrorist attacks — returned to power.

According to a timeline published by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled the country on Aug. 15, 2021, as Taliban forces entered the capital city of Kabul.

But the greatest catastrophe happened 11 days after that.

There's good news for Republicans on the congressional redistricting front Thursday evening, as the Supreme Court has now granted Texas' application to stay a divided three-judge district court panel ruling that enjoined the use of the newly drawn map.

Following the panel decision in mid-November, Texas appealed directly to the Supreme Court (as is permitted in redistricting cases), and the court swiftly issued an administrative (temporary) stay of the lower court decision.

On Thursday, in a 6-3 ruling, the court formally stayed the panel decision pending its appeal on the merits. The practical effect of this is that the new congressional map for Texas will be in effect for the upcoming midterms.

Elon Musk is a very interesting figure who acts as a sort of nexus of events because everything he does changes things dramatically. He's number one in advancing humanity toward being a space-faring race, his electric vehicles are changing and redefining how a car should be, and he even played a hand in discovering fraud and waste in our government through DOGE.

But I think one of the biggest ways Musk changed the course of humanity, at least in the immediate, is his purchase of Twitter and his moving the newly named "X" out of San Francisco and into Austin, Texas. When he did, a dramatic shift in society happened, as if a massive fog was lifted off the Western world, and we were seeing things far more clearly than we had.

Twitter had defined reality for so many people for years, to the point where even world leaders, the media, and Dick and Jane defined what was and wasn't true by the narratives seen on the website. Conservatives who were politically tuned in generally knew that what was being served on the website was curated to give weight to leftist narratives and opinions, but I'm not sure the vast majority of people really, truly got it. Even corporations were either influenced or forced to comply with certain narratives to retain good PR with the public.

Musk sat down with Joe Rogan and, in a very interesting segment, effectively noted how insanely influential Twitter was and how it controlled people before he got his hands on it. He notes that Twitter's location in San Francisco, a place so far radicalized toward the left, made the platform something of a force multiplier for leftist narratives, to the point where just a handful of people in one of the most far-leftist places in the world were defining reality for everyone else, from America to Europe.

Most Americans want the U.S. to engage more with allies and partners but have a growing doubt in the Pentagon’s capabilities to meet the challenges presented by China and other adversaries, a new national defense survey by the Ronald Reagan Institute shows.

The 2025 Reagan National Defense Survey found that 64% of Americans want the U.S. to be more engaged and take the lead internationally, a clear majority that cuts across political lines. Respondents said American military power is important, with 87% saying the U.S. needs to have “the most powerful military in the world.”

The survey, a major public opinion poll that has been conducted since 2018 for the Reagan Institute, showed agreement on critical defense and national security issues across a wide array of political views.

Of the more than 2,500 adults that responded, 91% were registered voters, with an even split between Republicans and Democrats. Independent voters made up less than a quarter of the respondents.

The survey found that most Americans are growing more alarmed about the global threats the U.S. faces and are increasingly willing to see leadership impact geopolitical discussions.

But only 45% of respondents said the military is strong enough to deter foreign aggression. That lack of confidence extends to the military’s ability to “win a war overseas,” with less than half saying the U.S. military is capable of winning.

The results come just before the Reagan National Defense Forum, an annual meeting at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California. The meeting brings together military leaders, defense industry executives and decision-makers from Congress and the Trump administration.

Revitalizing confidence in the U.S. military is one of the defense forum’s focus areas, with politicians from both sides of the aisle sitting with leadership from the Pentagon to discuss the results.

President Trump on Thursday ordered all U.S. flags lowered to half-staff in honor of Sarah Beckstrom, the National Guard member who was killed last week in an ambush just blocks from the White House.

Mr. Trump said flags will be lowered at all federal buildings, military bases, U.S. embassies abroad, naval vessels and other government properties “as a mark of respect for the memory” of Spc. Beckstrom. The flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset Thursday.

Spc. Beckstrom, 20, was one of two West Virginia National Guard members hit in a targeted shooting on Nov. 26. The Army specialist died of her wounds the next day, Thanksgiving.

A second West Virginia National Guard member, Andrew Wolfe, 24, was wounded in the attack.

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey on Monday said Staff Sgt. Wolfe, a member of the Air Force, remains in serious condition but has shown “positive” signs of recovery.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan who was also shot during the confrontation, pleaded not guilty to murder and assault charges Tuesday in his first hearing before a judge. He appeared remotely by video from a hospital bed.

Speaking during a Cabinet meeting at the White House on Tuesday, Mr. Trump said he reached out to the families of Spc. Beckstrom and Staff Sgt. Wolfe “very soon after this horrible event took place.”

“I want to pay my deepest respects to those two incredible people from the National Guard in West Virginia,” the president said, adding he has spoken with Spc. Beckstrom’s family since she died from her injuries.

The search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 will resume on Dec. 30, the Malaysian government announced, more than a decade after the Beijing-bound plane vanished in what is widely regarded as the world’s greatest aviation mystery.

The Boeing 777 was carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members when it disappeared 38 minutes after take-off from the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur on March 8, 2014.

It was flying over the South China Sea when it abruptly disappeared from air traffic control, with its last voice contact made at 1:19 a.m. local time.

More than 150 Chinese nationals were passengers on the doomed flight, along with 50 Malaysians, including the crew and citizens of the United States, Canada, France, Australia, Indonesia, India, Ukraine, and other countries.

The House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed former special counsel Jack Smith on Wednesday for a closed-door deposition, escalating the GOP’s investigation into the federal prosecutions Smith brought against President Donald Trump during the Biden administration.

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) directed Smith to appear on Dec. 17, according to the subpoena letter sent to the Biden-era special counsel on Wednesday. Jordan wrote that Smith has “information that is vital” to the panel’s oversight of the Justice Department and its handling of Trump-related investigations. Smith must also turn over documents by Dec. 12.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and with the holiday season approaching, consumers were not reluctant to start spending over the Thanksgiving holiday — especially online.

Despite the doomsday economic projections of Democrats everywhere who predicted a holiday season and current national economy that would rival the plight of the Joads in The Grapes of Wrath, online consumer spending hit record highs. Data revealed that online purchases on Black Friday totaled $11.8 billion. Moreover, this massive number followed another record for online purchases for Thanksgiving, which surpassed $6 billion.

Former Special Counsel Jack Smith has a lot to answer for: he led two of the most politicized prosecutions of all time against Donald Trump (for supposed classified documents violations and election interference), spied on lawmakers with his Arctic Frost antics, and turned then-Attorney General Merrick Garland’s Department of Justice into his own plaything.

Will we ever get answers? House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (OH-4) certainly wants them, and on Wednesday, he subpoenaed Smith, demanding that he appear before the committee on December 17.

"Due to your service as Special Counsel, the Committee believes that you possess information that is vital to its oversight of this matter," Jordan wrote in a letter accompanying his request.

The forthcoming deposition, which is set to take place behind closed doors, comes as House and Senate Republicans have zeroed in on Smith's election-related investigation of Trump, describing it as a scandal that unnecessarily swept up hundreds of Republican lawmakers, GOP entities, Trump allies and media outlets as part of the probe.

Last month, when I published a column asking “Is ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’ Real?” in the Wall Street Journal, I expected it to spark lively debate.

I didn’t anticipate a live demonstration of the very pathology I’d described.

My column outlined a pattern I see in my psychotherapy practice every week.

I call it “obsessive political preoccupation,” a presentation that resembles an obsessive-compulsive pattern in which one political figure becomes the center of intrusive thoughts, heightened arousal, and compulsive monitoring that takes over a person’s mental bandwidth.

TDS is not an actual diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and I made that clear in my article.

But patients tell me about political thoughts that hijack their day, sleepless nights, irritability, anger and anxiety that spills into work and relationships.

You’ve probably seen the videos of the U.S. military blowing up alleged drug boats from Venezuela. And it looks like that’s just a small part of what’s going on.

U.S. warships have been moved nearby in the Caribbean. American troops are carrying out drills in Puerto Rico. President Donald Trump declared that airspace over Venezuela is closed. And he even moved to designate the Cartel of the Suns as a terrorist organization, which also means the United States now regards Venezuelan leader Nicholas Maduro, not just as a cartel leader, but also as a terrorist leader.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Republican Matt Van Epps has won the special election for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District seat on Dec. 2.

The former state commissioner and Army helicopter pilot defeated the Democratic nominee, Aftyn Behn, with 53.2 percent of the vote in the highly publicized race, according to The Associated Press as of 9:45 p.m. ET. Behn had 45.7 percent of the vote.

“We did it,” the congressman-elect exclaimed during his victory speech at the ballroom inside of Nashville’s Millennium Hotel Maxwell House.

All National Guard members patrolling Washington, D.C., are now armed, as missions continue in the nation's capital and in other major cities, War Department press secretary Kingsley Wilson said Tuesday.

The move dovetailed with the Trump administration's push to protect troops deployed in support of public safety operations. "I can confirm that everybody in D.C. is now armed," Wilson told reporters during a morning press conference.

She added that many Guard troops in D.C. are now conducting joint patrols alongside local police.

Voters in Tennessee elected Republican Matt Van Epps to fill a vacant U.S. House of Representatives seat, Decision Desk HQ projected on Tuesday, padding the narrow lead by President Donald Trump's party in the chamber heading into next year's midterm elections.

Van Epps, a former commissioner of the Tennessee Department of General Services, defeated Democrat state Rep. Aftyn Behn to fill the seat vacated by former Rep. Mark Green, who resigned in July.

The Middle Tennessee district includes parts of Nashville. Trump won the district by 22 points in 2024, and both Trump and Green endorsed Van Epps.

A survey by Emerson College Polling/The Hill released last week suggested it could be a tight race. An upset by the Democrat in the off-cycle election following a holiday weekend would have whittled away at Republicans' 219-213 House majority.

President Trump, as of Tuesday, has officially terminated all "Pardons" or "Commutations" signed by the infamous autopen during Joe Biden's term as president.

In a post on Truth Social, the president wrote:

Any and all Documents, Proclamations, Executive Orders, Memorandums, or Contracts, signed by Order of the now infamous and unauthorized “AUTOPEN,” within the Administration of Joseph R. Biden Jr., are hereby null, void, and of no further force or effect. Anyone receiving “Pardons,” “Commutations,” or any other Legal Document so signed, please be advised that said Document has been fully and completely terminated, and is of no Legal effect. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Experts on China’s practice of harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience recently spoke at a summit in Brussels, addressing lawmakers from 28 countries on the urgency of the issue while offering recommendations on what governments can do to tackle the gruesome abuse.

The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), a global group of hundreds of lawmakers who coordinate their efforts to confront challenges posed by Beijing, held its fifth annual summit in Brussels in November. One of the topics discussed during the summit was how to prevent forced organ harvesting and organ trafficking.

U.S. military strikes on land targets inside Venezuela will begin “very soon,” President Donald Trump said during a Cabinet meeting Dec. 2, while warning that other countries could also be subject to strikes if they’re suspected of being involved in drug trafficking.

“We’re going to start doing those strikes on land too,” he said at the White House alongside his Cabinet officials, responding to a question on whether the military will strike inside Venezuela. “We know where they live. We know where the bad ones live, and we’re going to start that very soon.”

The president did not provide other details about the operation, but U.S. strikes inside the Latin American country would mark an escalation in the conflict that has been brewing since September after the military conducted strikes on boats...

President Donald Trump said on Nov. 30 that he plans to honor the two National Guard members who were shot in Washington last week and that he had invited their parents to the White House.

West Virginia National Guard members Sarah Beckstrom and Andrew Wolfe were shot on Nov. 26 in what authorities say was an ambush by an Afghan national near the White House. Beckstrom died from her injuries on Nov. 27, while Wolfe is still in critical condition.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he had spoken with Beckstrom’s parents and invited them, along with Wolfe’s parents, to the White House.

“The only thing I can say, they were devastated,” he told reporters. “I said, ‘When you’re ready, because that’s a tough thing, come to the White House. We’re going to honor Sarah. And likewise with Andrew, recover or not, we’re going to honor him.’”

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is reportedly considering pursuing new indictments against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) after a federal judge dismissed their prior charges in November.

Comey had been indicted in late September for making false statements to Congress and obstructing a congressional investigation. James was indicted in early October for bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution. Both pleaded not guilty.

Judge Cameron McGowan Currie, as RedState reported last week, dismissed both cases while ruling that the interim U.S. Attorney who brought the charges, Lindsey Halligan, was unconstitutionally appointed.

The ruling was not based on the merits of the case. But that didn't stop Comey from declaring, "I'm innocent."

James was even more celebratory in her remarks, stating, "I remain fearless in the face of these baseless charges as I continue fighting for New Yorkers every single day."

But the victory laps for the duo may have been premature. Reuters is reporting that the DOJ "could seek new charges against Comey and James as soon as this week."

Without this force supporting his actions, the president’s power is little more than ceremonial. What happens, then, when local authorities undermine the president’s use of force?

Beijing’s export controls are forcing businesses in Europe to move sourcing away from China, according to a survey conducted by the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China and published on Dec. 1.

The lobby group published the results of a flash survey completed by 131 of its members, in which 75 companies (57 percent) said they expected to be, or had been, impacted by Chinese export controls. Of those, more than one in three (36 percent) said they plan to work with suppliers to develop capacity outside of China.

However, uncertainty remains among a large proportion of the group’s members, with 43 percent saying that they have not yet made a decision about how to respond to the controls.

President Donald Trump assumed leadership of the Group of 20 (G20) Monday, taking the reins from South Africa and promising to take the coalition back to its roots.

During its 12-month presidency of the group, the United States plans to focus on driving economic growth and prosperity, according to the U.S. State Department.

“As we usher in these much-needed reforms, we will prioritize three core themes: unleashing economic prosperity by limiting regulatory burdens, unlocking affordable and secure energy supply chains, and pioneering new technologies and innovations,” the State Department stated on Monday.

President Donald Trump confirmed his call with Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro on Sunday night, but declined to provide details amid a report that he warned the dictator to leave to protect himself and his family.

The report comes from sources who told The Miami Herald that Trump warned: You can save yourself and those closest to you, but you must leave the country now. "I don't want to comment on it. The answer is yes," Trump told reporters Sunday aboard Air Force One when asked whether he had spoken with Maduro.

Trump reportedly delivered a stark message to Maduro during the high-stakes phone call last week: He, his wife Cilia Flores, and his son would be granted safe passage out of Venezuela — but only if they left immediately, the Herald reported.
