HAPPY NEW YEAR!
AUSTRALIANS have ushered in 2016 with spectacular fireworks displays, as countries around the world put their own spin on the global celebration.
In Sydney, more than a million punters filled parks and streets to catch a glimpse of the world famous light show.
Synchronised to a soundtrack of some of 2015’s biggest hits including Uptown Funk and Hold Back the River, a multicoloured firework “waterfall” cascaded off the Harbour Bridge and pyrotechnic butterflies, octopuses and flowers lit up the sky.

The almost 15-minute fireworks show sent crowds in the harbour city into rapturous cheers and applause.
Swarms of bubble machine-wielding children who caught the 9pm fireworks made way for loved-up couples in prime positions beneath the Harbour Bridge for Sydney’s midnight show.
Packs of exuberant twenty-somethings broke into spontaneous dance-offs, while amateur photographers descended on the harbour in droves hoping to capture the perfect shot.

Thousands packed the CBD, braving the sweltering heat to catch a glimpse of the stunning fireworks.

Meanwhile, over at the Crown Casino, James Packer hosted his own NYE party where his girlfriend Mariah Carey performed.
The 45-year-old diva was the star attraction in a white diamond dress with a plunging neckline.
Packer was accompanied to the event by Foreign Affairs minister Julie Bishop and her partner, property developer David Panton.

Across Australia, thousands welcomed the new year with big parties and lots of champagne.
More than 100,000 people helped ring in the new year in Brisbane, an hour after the rest of the eastern states.
A synchronised fireworks display was set off from five barges and three CBD rooftops, coinciding with a display on the Gold Coast.

Three months of Russian airstrikes in Syria have killed more than 2,300 people, a third of them civilians, a monitoring group has said.
Russia began conducting its air war in Syria on 30 September in support of its embattled ally, President Bashar al-Assad.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Moscow’s strikes on Syria have killed 2,371 people so far. The toll includes 792 civilians, among them 180 children.
The raids killed 655 Islamic State fighters, which Russia says it is targeting along with “other terrorist groups”.
Another 924 opposition fighters – ranging from US-backed rebels to members of al-Qaida’s Syrian affiliate and Isis rival the al-Nusra Front – were also killed in the Russian strikes.
The Britain-based monitoring group has an extensive network of sources inside Syria. Russia, a US-led coalition and the Syrian airforce are all carrying out air raids in the country, but the Observatory differentiates between strikes based on the type of aircraft flown and the munitions used.
Russia has come under growing criticism from rebels, human rights groups and the west for inflicting civilian casualties.
Amnesty International last week said Russian raids had killed hundreds of civilians, many in targeted strikes that could constitute war crimes.
US State Department spokesman Mark Toner echoed the accusations on Tuesday, saying Russian strikes have “killed hundreds of civilians, including first responders, [and] hit medical facilities, schools and markets”.
More than 250,000 people have been killed since the Syrian conflict erupted in March 2011 with anti-government protests.

Terror Threat: Brussels Cancels NYE Festivities
New Year's Eve Belgian authorities call off the city's annual fireworks display and other celebrations due to fears of an attack.
1:31, UK, Wednesday 30 December 2015
Brussels has been on high alert due to fears of a terror attack
The Belgian capital has cancelled its traditional New Year's Eve celebrations due to the threat of a terror attack.
Brussels mayor Yvan Mayeur said the decision was made following a risk analysis by security experts.
He told broadcaster RTBF: "Unfortunately we have been forced to cancel the fireworks and all that was planned for tomorrow (Thursday) evening and that would have brought a lot of people together in the centre of Brussels."
Around 50,000 people were expected to attend the annual fireworks display in Place de Brouckere. The only event that will continue is the Christmas markets.

It comes after two men were held on suspicion of plotting militant attacks in the city on New Year's Eve.
They were arrested during an anti-terrorist operation across Brussels and the neighbouring Brabant region as well as in the Liege area on Sunday and Monday.
Six people were initially questioned after house searches but four of them were released.
Police found military clothing and Islamic State propaganda and computer material which investigators are examining, but no weapons or explosives.
The two arrested men belong to the Kamikaze Riders, a motorbike club whose members are mostly of North African origin.
Brussels last called off its New Year fireworks display in 2007 after a plan was foiled to free Nizar Trabelsi, a former Tunisian footballer convicted of plotting to blow up a military base. Photo: Suspected Paris attacks ringleader Abaaoud was a Belgian national Last month schools, universities and the Metro were shut down in Brussels for several days after authorities raised the alert over a "serious and imminent" terror threat.
Belgium, and Brussels in particular, have been at the centre of investigations into the Paris attacks after it emerged that two of the suicide bombers who attacked the French capital had lived in the country.
Belgian authorities have arrested a number of people on suspicion of involvement in those attacks, which have been claimed by Islamic State.
Two of the Paris suicide bombers, Brahim Abdeslam and Bilal Hadfi, had been living in Belgium.
Brahim's brother, Salah Abdeslam, a key suspect in the attacks on 13 November, had fled to Belgium afterwards and remains on the run.
The car he was in was said to have been stopped three times by French police unaware that one of the passengers was Europe's most wanted fugitive.
Belgian national Abdelhamid Abaaoud was suspected of being the ringleader of the Paris attacks. He was later killed during a siege at a flat in a Paris suburb.
