FBI seeks public’s help to identify ISIS militant

The FBI is seeking the public’s help to identify a masked militant in a video for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, who they believe may be an American.

In a bulletin released Wednesday, the agency asked for any clues to the identify of a masked “English-speaking individual” who appeared in an ISIS propaganda film released in September.

“We’re hoping that someone might recognize this individual and provide us with key pieces of information,” Michael Steinbach, assistant director of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division, said in a statement.

“No piece of information is too small,” he added.

The masked man speaks in front of a waving black flag as a group of men dig their own graves. He says in the video that the men are soldiers for Syrian President Bashar Assad’s.

The FBI has released a minute-long excerpt from the 55-minute propaganda video. Unseen in the FBI clip, the militants are shown executing the soldiers in the full ISIS video.

Law enforcement groups have raised the alarm about western citizens traveling to the Mideast to join ISIS and other terrorist groups, or fighters returning to their home countries to carry out attacks.

FBI Director James Comey told CBS’s “60 Minutes” on Sunday that about a dozen Americans are fighting with terrorists in Syria. But unless their passports are revoked, they are “entitled to come back” to the country, he said.

There have been calls to automatically revoke the passports of those who join ISIS and other terrorist groups, but lawmakers have yet to act on any bills.
