Sen. Lindsey Graham said on Sunday that U.S. combat troops are going to be needed on the ground in Syria and Iraq to defeat Islamic State militants, despite the repeated insistence from President Barack Obama that he won’t deploy such forces.
The South Carolina Republican argued on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Arab forces in Iraq and Syria won’t have the capability to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and that the forces in Syria will need U.S. training on the ground at the very least.
“There is no way I can see how we’re going to fix the problem in Iraq in Syria without American ground troops,” Graham said. “This mythical Arab army we’re trying to get up to go in on the ground in Syria will need a lot of American hand-holding."
“Mr. President, level with the American people: You need boots on the ground,” Graham added. “American soldiers to go to Syria and Iraq as part of a coalition, and we’re going to need more than 4,000 to destroy ISIL in Iraq and Syria.”
Graham also said that the U.S. strategy to train and equip the Free Syrian Army was “militarily unsound” because the U.S. was not establishing a no-fly zone to stop Syrian President Bashar Assad’s air power.
“This strategy we have regarding the Free Syrian Army is going to get all these kids slaughtered if we don’t deal with Assad’s air force,” Graham said.
