Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton weighs in on how U.S. should handle China's lack of transparency over coronavirus outbreak.
Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures" that it was a "scandal" that the United States has trained some Chinese nationals to "go back to China to compete for our jobs, to take our business, and ultimately to steal our property and design weapons and other devices that can be used against the American people."
Cotton, who has vowed that China will "pay" for what he has called its deliberate choice to unleash the coronavirus on the world, went on to say that the U.S. should take a "hard look at the visas" awarded to Chinese nationals.
"If Chinese students want to come here and study Shakespeare and the Federalist Papers, that's what they need to learn from America,"
Cotton said. "They don't need to learn quantum computing and artificial intelligence from America."
Left-wing commenators quickly accused Cotton of racism, and noted that Shakespeare was not an American.
Cotton was one of the first lawmakers to speculate that COVID-19 may have made its first human transmission in a Chinese laboratory -- an idea once mocked as a "conspiracy theory" but that is now under investigation.

Missouri launches lawsuit against China over the spread of coronavirus

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt on Saturday defended his decision to sue the Chinese government, saying that the nation "misled the world" and allowed the coronavirus to inflict a heavy toll on his state.
"What we know so far is that the Chinese government is engaged in a campaign of deceit and deception and misrepresentations, misled the world in critical weeks in December and January about the nature of this virus, this deadly virus that’s been unleashed to the world," he told Fox News host Neil Cavuto.
"And what we’ve got now is untold human loss, no part of the world has been spared, including my home state, where you have over 200 lives lost and 6,000 cases," he said. "So, you have a real human toll -- people being separated from their families, not being able to go to nursing homes to visit loved ones or attend funeral homes."

Cases of the new coronavirus are overwhelming hospitals, morgues and cemeteries across Brazil as Latin America’s largest nation veers closer to becoming one of the world’s pandemic hot spots.
Medical officials in Rio de Janeiro and at least four other major cities have warned that their hospital systems are on the verge of collapse, or already too overwhelmed to take any more patients.
Health experts expect the number of infections in the country of 211 million people will be much higher than what has been reported because of insufficient, delayed testing.

Why Taiwan was the only nation that responded correctly to coronavirus

After every disaster, we search for the bad decisions and missed warnings that allowed it to happen. We remember how Captain E. J. Smith of the Titanic disregarded telegram alerts about icebergs ahead, or that NASA leaders chose to launch the space shuttle Challenger despite warnings that the craft’s booster rockets might malfunction.
Most major disasters arouse some sense of outrage, and the COVID-19 pandemic is no exception. Looking back on how the crisis unfolded, we find mistakes not just regrettable but stunning, unforgivable — some would say even criminal. The decisions that enable disaster strike us as worse than incompetence — made by people who must have known they were risking the lives of others.
But the more closely we examine most disasters, the less clear-cut these explanations become. ...

Vaughan and other researchers note that complacency is usually fed by groupthink. At a time when China and the World Health Organization were downplaying the coronavirus threat, it was easy for world leaders to believe that everything was under control. Meanwhile, China has used its influence to keep Taiwan out of the WHO and other international organizations, and Samson Ellis, the Taipei bureau chief for Bloomberg News, believes that Taiwan’s isolation from WHO paradoxically helped the country by forcing it to rely on its own judgment on health issues.
“Taiwan knows it’s on its own,” he says.
In January, while other countries were trusting the WHO’s bland assurances, Taiwan was already turning away cruise ships and performing health checks at airports. Taking early action against COVID-19 meant defying a consensus shared by much of the world. The country’s public-health institutions were designed to be sensitive to even faint signs of trouble and to guard against optimistic biases. The results speak for themselves.

Foreign Relations Committee member Sen. Ted Cruz on issues surrounding China's actions before and after the COVID-19 outbreak.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, announced Friday that he intends to introduce legislation that would prevent outlets -- like China's Phoenix TV -- from using Canadian or Mexican stations to spread foreign propaganda across U.S. airwaves.
The move comes as the U.S. has criticized the Chinese government for its role in spreading disinformation about the coronavirus, which is thought to have originated in a lab in Wuhan. Cruz's office specifically mentioned Phoenix TV, which is reportedly using a Mexican broadcast tower to transmit Chinese propaganda into the U.S.
According to a press release, this particular legislation would amend communications law in a way that would preclude the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from granting licenses to "broadcast applicants who intend to change the language of the station they are purchasing, unless the FCC can certify that the programming of the station will never be influenced by a foreign government or governing party."
"China should not be able to set up shop in Mexico and blanket America with propaganda," Cruz said in the press release.

Kim Jong-un is in “a vegetative state” in a coma following a botched heart operation, according to disputed reports overnight.
The unverified claims – which follow online rumours of his death – emerged as a team of Chinese medical experts reportedly flew in to treat the North Korean despot, who has not been seen in public for two weeks, reports The Sun.
Rumours intensified about Kim Jong-un’s condition as a the Chinese team including health care experts is dispatched into North Korea to treat him, Reuters reports.
The trip by Chinese doctors and officials to Pyongyang comes after reports the North Korean leader was in a critical condition after cardiovascular surgery.
A delegation including the medical staff and led by a senior member of the Chinese Communist Party’s International Liaison Department left Beijing for North Korea on Thursday.
The New York Post is reporting a vice director of HKSTV Hong Kong Satellite Television, a Beijing-backed broadcast network in Hong Kong, claimed that Kim was dead, citing a “very solid source”.
Her post on the Chinese messaging app Weibo has been shared widely on social media, according to a report in the International Business Times.
Earlier in the week, South Korean news site Daily NK reported Kim was recovering after undergoing a cardiovascular procedure on April 12.
US officials said they were told Kim’s condition was critical after the surgery, although President Donald Trump has since cast doubt on the report.
Seoul officials and a source within the Liaison Department have challenged reports Kim was gravely ill. On Saturday there were reports from Japan that the North Korean leader was in a “vegetative state”.

Australia has now reached the “third wave” of the coronavirus, the Prime Minister has declared.
First there was the “export phase”, when the virus spread from Wuhan to countries across the globe. Then there was the “repatriation phase”, when overseas travellers returned home to Australia bringing the virus with them.
Now Scott Morrison says we’ve reached phase three – dubbed the “community phase” – when community transmission is the biggest concern.
The new phase brings with it new challenges and the Government has announced some major changes that will affect Aussie life.

With the world preoccupied by the coronavirus pandemic, China has been looking to exert more military control in the South China Sea. This week three warships from the U.S. Seventh Fleet, joined by an Australian frigate, responded by sailing into the disputed waters in a show of force. Left’s scornful response amid COVID-19 lockdowns will help re-elect Trump

You’d think the left would have learned from its boneheaded mistakes after the astounding presidential victory of Donald Trump in 2016. And boy, would you be wrong.
From Kentucky to Oregon, protests have been staged in recent days by angry Americans sick to distraction of corona lockdown. Wielding placards and scowls, some of them riding safely in cars — and a tiny few brandishing firearms — they’ve converged on state capitals and public spaces from Michigan to Montana and New Hampshire to Pennsylvania, anxious to achieve one common goal: getting back to work.
The reaction from the elite, mainly white, leftist media has been stunning, depressing. And familiar.

Most people are not stupid or suicidal. They know the risks of coronavirus and are taking life-saving precautions. But for some folks, including single parents and those who labored near the poverty line, working from home is not an option. People are suffering, going broke, and are sick of being told what to do by elites who don’t share in the economic apocalypse. And as they did in 2016, the elites have reflexively behaved like schoolyard bullies, hurling insults at people they consider inferior.
We all must be careful. But some of us have weighed the risks, and decided that getting back to some semblance of normalcy is preferable to endless lockdown.
This means another thing: four more years of a president they despise, a man eager to see his people start going about their business in a safe way. The left has learned nothing from defeat.
