Online Propaganda Builds Islamic State Brand in the Face of Military Losses
Extremist group uses claims of attacks to maintain relevance as it faces pressure in Syria and Iraq

Islamic State has lost most of the territory it once held in Syria and Iraq. It is vying for survival with other, sometimes stronger, extremist groups. But one sphere where Islamic State still reigns supreme among terrorists is in cyberspace.
The group’s vast online presence is a critical recruitment and marketing tool that has helped it build a brutish brand using propaganda and sometimes false claims. Maintaining the perception that Islamic State can shape the actions of loyalists has become all the more important as its territorial control, or self-declared caliphate, has almost completely collapsed.
The latest example of the role of such online propaganda came on Thursday, when Islamic State’s official news outlet claimed that a man who stabbed his mother and sister to death in France had responded to its calls to attack citizens of countries that are part of the U.S.-led coalition fighting the group. French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb disputed the statement, saying the perpetrator was mentally unstable.

Presidents, lawmakers honor John McCain’s life of service

WASHINGTON — Presidents and lawmakers from both parties honored Sen. John McCain’s decades of service to his country in the hours after his death Saturday. President Donald Trump, who once criticized McCain for being taken prisoner during the Vietnam War, said his “deepest sympathies and respect” went out to McCain’s family.
McCain, 81, died at his ranch in Arizona after a yearlong battle with brain cancer. On Saturday night, a black hearse accompanied by a police motorcade could be seen driving away from the ranch near Sedona where the Republican senator spent his final weeks.

Political scientist Michael Cornfield on Friday said that the majority of Americans believe tech firms are responsible for making sure people receive accurate news and information, citing a recent George Washington University politics poll.
"We also asked who do you think is responsible for making sure Americans get accurate information, and they blame Google, Facebook, and Twitter more than they blame Donald Trump or the government in general," Cornfield, who is the director of the GW Politics Poll, told Hill.TV's Joe Concha on "What America's Thinking."
"It is not a good season right now for big tech in the eyes of the American public," he continued.

John McCain dies at age 81
Senator John McCain has died after a battle with brain cancer. Here's a look back at the life and times of the Arizona republican senator who was also known as a 'Maverick.'
Arizona Sen. John McCain, a war hero who survived five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, served three decades in Congress and went on to become the Republican Party’s nominee for president in 2008, died Saturday. He was 81 years old.
In his last hours, McCain turned down further treatment, his family announced in a statement.
McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer in July 2017. Doctors discovered the tumor during a medical procedure to remove a blood clot from above his left eye. He remained upbeat after the diagnosis, flying back to Washington days after surgery with a large scar visible above his eye to partake in the Senate’s health care debate.
“I greatly appreciate the outpouring of support - unfortunately for my sparring partners in Congress, I'll be back soon, so stand-by!” McCain tweeted on July 20 after his diagnosis.

The United States is home to the world’s highest-ranking colleges and universities. Indeed, our higher education system is one of our greatest assets. Yet we do too little to defend it.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, more than 20 million students planned to attend U.S. colleges and universities in 2017. And the National Science Foundation reported that more than 800,000 international students were enrolled in institutions of higher education in the U.S.
Most of these international students, faculty members and researchers are here to capitalize on America’s educational opportunities. However, some are here to exploit the openness of our higher education system.
According to an advisory warning released by the FBI in 2011, foreign intelligence services target American universities to recruit students and faculty members to be agents of espionage and attempt to steal technical information and products. The FBI also reported that certain foreign actors illicitly exploit the student visa program and use universities as hubs to spread false information and political propaganda.

Lawmaker: Chinese navy seeks to encircle US homeland

China is laying the groundwork to establish naval outposts in strategic locations around the United States, according to a senior Republican lawmaker.
“They're positioning themselves in all the different ports — in the Straits of Malacca, in the South China Sea,” said Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., who chairs the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific and also sits on the subcommittee for the Western Hemisphere. “Then you bolster that up with ships in El Salvador, possible ships in Cuba, possible ships in Haiti. ... I think it’s a big cause for concern.”
President Trump’s administration warns regularly that China is using loans and economic aid to purchase influence and eventually “dominate” the Indo-Pacific region, a concern that the rising communist power dismisses as outdated Cold War thinking. But Beijing’s establishment of diplomatic relations with El Salvador is raising new fears that Chinese warships could dock in key ports in the Western Hemisphere.

IF you don’t show up to vote in Australia on Election Day, you can expect to get a fine in the mail. Voting in this country is compulsory. But politicians listening to voters? Apparently that’s voluntary.
What we’ve learnt these past few years, culminating with this week’s leadership spill, is that in Australia the rules that the rest of us have to live by don’t seem to apply to politicians.
That they haven’t lived up to their side of the bargain has led to the diminishing of our faith, not just in our political parties, but in our political institutions and the system as a whole. It’s taken us to a dangerous place, where people shrug their shoulders and have given up caring, when really, we should care more than ever before.
Australians are sick of leadership spills, but our dissatisfaction runs deeper than that. We’re sick of the whole political game. Because although it’s a game for the politicians — tallying numbers like a scoreboard at the footy – for the rest of us, real life goes on.
Farmers suffering through drought? That’s real life, not a game.
Pensioners shivering through winter because they’re terrified of their heating bill for using their heater? That’s real life, not a game.
