US sends powerful warship to Japan amid looming Trump-Kim summit

One of the U.S. Navy’s most advanced guided missile destroyers arrived in Japan on Tuesday, weeks before the expected summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The USS Milius strengthens defenses against any potential ballistic missile strikes by North Korea. The move is supposed to be a reminder to Pyongyang of the U.S. military might and the pressure it is capable of applying if the meeting fails to lead to denuclearization, Reuters reported.
The warship will “support security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region by bringing enhanced missile defense capabilities as a ballistic missile defense platform,” the U.S. Navy said in a statement.

Before Meeting Kim, Trump Had to Repudiate the Iran Deal
Otherwise North Korea could have demanded the same lenient terms, and negotiations would fail.

When President Trump announced America’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal two weeks ago, critics warned the move would undermine U.S. credibility just when it was needed most: on the eve of negotiations with North Korea over its nuclear-weapons and missile programs. If Mr. Trump was willing to rip up the Iran deal, which had won the blessing of the United Nations Security Council and America’s biggest allies, why would Kim Jong Un believe the U.S. would abide by any new agreement?

Pentagon uninvites China from maritime military exercise

The United States has rescinded an invitation to China to participate in a major international military exercise over Beijing’s military buildup in the South China Sea, the Pentagon confirmed Wednesday.
“The United States is committed to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Pentagon spokesman Chris Logan said in a statement. “China's continued militarization of disputed features in the South China Sea only serve to raise tensions and destabilize the region.
“As an initial response to China's continued militarization of the South China Sea we have disinvited the [Chinese] Navy from the 2018 Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise. China's behavior is inconsistent with the principles and purposes of the RIMPAC exercise."
The move was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg brought his apology tour to Europe on Tuesday.
During an appearance before a group of European Union parliamentary leaders, Zuckerberg repeated his apology for the range of ways the company he founded has not done enough to address problems such as foreign interference in elections and the proliferation of fake accounts, fake news and hate speech.
“We didn't take a broad enough view of our responsibilities. That was a mistake, and I'm sorry for it,” he said.

An Australian archbishop who was the most senior Roman Catholic cleric in the world charged with covering up child sex abuse was convicted Tuesday and faces a potential two years in prison.
Magistrate Robert Stone handed down the verdict against Archbishop of Adelaide Philip Wilson in Newcastle Local Court, north of Sydney, following a magistrate-only trial.
Wilson, 67, had pleaded not guilty to knowing of the crimes of a pedophile priest in the 1970s. He denied under oath in court last month that two former altar boys ever told him that they had been sexually abused by a priest.

The “deep state” is in a deep state of desperation. With little time left before the Justice Department inspector general’s report becomes public, and with special counsel Robert Mueller having failed to bring down Donald Trump after a year of trying, they know a reckoning is coming.
At this point, there is little doubt that the highest echelons of the FBI and the Justice Department broke their own rules to end the Hillary Clinton “matter,” but we can expect the inspector general to document what was done or, more pointedly, not done. It is hard to see how a yearlong investigation of this won’t come down hard on former FBI Director James Comey and perhaps even former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, who definitely wasn’t playing mahjong in a secret “no aides allowed” meeting with former President Clinton on a Phoenix airport tarmac.
With this report on the way and congressional investigators beginning to zero in on the lack of hard, verified evidence for starting the Trump probe, current and former intelligence and Justice Department officials are dumping everything they can think of to save their reputations.
But it is backfiring....
