Mike Pompeo to China: ‘Make a full public accounting’ of Tiananmen Square massacre

Chinese leaders must “make a full public accounting” of the 1989 crackdown on protestors in Tiananmen Square, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday.
“On the 29th anniversary of the violent suppression of peaceful demonstrations in and around Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989, we remember the tragic loss of innocent lives,” Pompeo said. “As Liu Xiaobo wrote in his 2010 Nobel Peace Prize speech, delivered in absentia, ‘the ghosts of June 4th have not yet been laid to rest.’”
That statement in memoriam is a two-pronged rebuke of the Chinese Communist regime. Liu died in Chinese custody last year after nearly three-decades of political opposition, a career that began with a hunger strike in solidarity with the Tiananmen Square protestors in 1989. Chinese censors work aggressively to censor any mention of the suppressed protests around the time of the anniversary.

Italy and Spain got new governments last week. But while Italy’s change of leadership led markets on a roller coaster, Spain’s was met with a yawn. The reason: Their economies have followed different paths, and so have their attitudes to the euro. The populists who make up Italy’s new government have toyed with exiting the common currency, whereas all of Spain’s major parties are committed to staying in.
This isn’t what you would have predicted six years ago; Spain suffered far more than Italy during the euro crisis. But it also reformed its economy much more and has enjoyed a much stronger recovery; gross domestic product is now above its precrisis peak. By contrast, Italy’s economic problems long predate the euro, and its failure to fix them has left GDP 5% below its prior peak and voters receptive to radical economic prescriptions.

President Trump's personal lawyer speaks out on 'Hannity' about the Russia investigation and the Trump team's strategy of speaking directly to the American people.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller is sensitive to pulling "another Comey" as the Russia probe enters its final months, Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani said in an interview Sunday.
Calling the investigation a "long nightmare with the American people," Giuliani also issued a challenge directly to Mueller's team, telling investigators to "man up" rather than seek to subpoena President Trump.
"They have to make a decision without it," Giuliani said on ABC's "This Week," noting that the Trump team has already made available several witnesses and turned over more than a million documents. "So, come on, man up and make your decision."

Yet what all the pro-Marxist, pro-socialist speakers ignore is the human cost of Marxism.
In the name of Marx, Vladimir Lenin established the Soviet Union as police state that killed millions. Josef Stalin succeeded Lenin as the Soviet leader and proved even more ruthless and committed to killing.
Adolf Hitler led the National Socialist German Workers’ (Nazi) Party and socialism was central to his taking over the German economy and the German state – a fact the left makes every effort to avoid.
Mao Zedong was the deadliest Marxist of all and killed an uncounted number of millions to impose his will on China.
Fidel Castro turned a prosperous Cuba into a tragic police state in the name of Marxism-Leninism. And Venezuela has been shattered by socialism.
The academic left and its news media and Hollywood acolytes refuse to confront the horrifying record of Marxism’s endless inhumanity.

Google was set to rent out its D.C. headquarters to a progressive group running a fundraiser for top Senate Democrats, but canceled it Friday just days before.
The group “Run For Something” cultivates up-and-coming Democrats for all levels of government. Its event, “Party For Something,” was supposed to occur June 6 at a location only disclosed if tickets ($100 to $1,000) were purchased.

Fox News Channel is dominating cable news according to recent Nielsen Media Research data. The network with the slogan "Real News. Real Honest Opinion" has been putting up some real numbers in terms of ratings during the past few years.
According to Nielsen, Fox now has 10 of the top 15 cable news shows and has maintained nearly two years of beating every other cable channel for total daily viewers. CNN on the other hand has lost nearly 25% of its viewers. These numbers caught the attention of President Trump who declared that Fox News' rival CNN is "dead."

President Trump’s legal team sent a letter to Special Counsel Robert Mueller in January outlining many reasons why the president should not sit down for an interview.
Fox News has obtained the letter, which offers a detailed look at the president’s legal team and its thinking about whether he should submit to an interview, including the argument that under the law and the U.S. Constitution, Mueller faces a high bar in trying to prove he needs in-person answers from the president.

SINGAPORE—The U.S. and China appear to be headed for a more confrontational relationship in Southeast Asia as Washington warns of a more aggressive response to the militarization of disputed islands in the South China Sea.
Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, a regional security conference, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis warned there could be “much larger consequences” in the future from China’s moves to install weapons systems on islands in the sea. He didn’t specify what the consequences would be.
The warning, in response to a question from an audience member, came after a speech by Mr. Mattis in which he said “despite China’s claims to the contrary, the placement of these weapons systems is tied directly to military use for the purposes of intimidation and coercion.”

The biggest threat to democracy now comes from the center

“Across Europe and North America, centrists are the least supportive of democracy, the least committed to its institutions and the most supportive of authoritarianism.” So wrote political researcher David Adler in The New York Times after analyzing responses to two multicountry surveys on values.
Adler found that centrists are less likely to regard democracy as “very good” and to consider free elections and protecting liberties from state oppression “essential” features of democracy. His study is subject to criticism, but it contains at least a kernel of truth.
The most vitriolic critics of electoral decisions in recent years around the world have been long identified — and celebrated — as centrists. They have been arguing that extremists, mostly on the right, are undermining the foundations of democracy. Democracy, in their view, is becoming dangerously undemocratic.

As for freedom of speech, centrist governments in Britain, Sweden and Germany aggressively suppress reports of violence and crime by Muslim immigrants. Supposedly centrist colleges in the United States routinely suppress free speech, and their recent graduates hired by Silicon Valley firms — Google, Facebook, Twitter — are busy suppressing speech in the larger society.
So if you’re worried about extremists’ authoritarianism, keep an eye on the centrists, too.
