Aeroplane with 242 on board crashes in India’s Ahmedabad city, according to reports 

An Air India flight bound for London has crashed and exploded into flames seconds after takeoff with all but one passenger killed.

An Air India plane carrying 242 people has crashed and exploded into flames just seconds after taking off from an airport in India’s western city of Ahmedabad. 

At least 290 people have died after an Air India plane crashed shortly after take off from Ahmedabad airport in India on Thursday, Reuters reported, citing local officials. 

Among those killed include passengers on the flight, and people who were inside the BJ Medical College and Hospital hostel when the plane crashed into it. 

“Approximately 294 have died. This includes some students as the plane crashed on the building where they were staying,” Vidhi Chaudhary, a top state police officer, told Reuters. 

Air India flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was headed to London Gatwick Airport and there were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, seven Portuguese and one Canadian on-board, according to the airline. At least one passenger has miraculously survived, according to state health officials. 

“Yes, one survivor is confirmed,” Dhananjay Dwivedi, principal secretary of Gujarat state’s health department, said. 

They were being treated in hospital, he added without further details.
