After proving his innocence, Trump shouldn’t have to be humble

Soon after news broke that special counsel Robert Mueller found no Russia collusion, media types began offering their idea of an olive branch to President Trump. It generally came in the form of advice that he try to “heal” the nation.
One writer encouraged the president to give an Oval Office address in which he is “contrite, humble and authentic in tone” and use it to ask the public “for a new opportunity to be president of all Americans.”
Allow me to go out on a limb with a prediction: Hell will freeze over first. There might be an Oval Office speech, but it won’t be contrite and humble, nor should it be.
Trump is an innocent man who was outrageously framed by political enemies, including some in the Obama White House, the FBI and the Justice Department. Instead of begging forgiveness, he is entitled to feel just as Bill Clinton did after his many brushes with political death, that “whatever doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.”

Villainy in Venezuela

By sending troops to Venezuela to shore up dictator Nicolás Maduro, Russia’s Vladimir Putin has crossed yet another line — the Monroe Doctrine, practically the oldest principle of US foreign policy.
Declared by President James Monroe back in 1823 to block European colonialism in the New World, the doctrine declares that interference by Old World nations in the Western Hemisphere is “the manifestation of an unfriendly disposition toward the United States.”
The Russian soldiers won’t make much difference: Indeed, they’ll add fuel to the burning popular rage against Maduro — who, with predecessor Hugo Chavez, has led Venezuela to disaster.
Yet Moscow’s move is a blatant challenge to Washington. Unanswered, it will make not just President Trump but America look weak.
Trump warned midweek that “Russia has to get out” of Venezuela and that “all options” are on the table for making it happen. National Security Adviser John Bolton followed up Friday by declaring such “provocative actions” to be “a direct threat to international peace and security in the region” and vowing “to defend and protect the interests of the United States and those of our partners in the Western Hemisphere.”

Guaidó has called for a nationwide mass protest on Monday. Maybe that will trigger the start of mass military defections or prompt commanders to abandon a leader who has led the country to ruin.
Maduro’s rapid ouster would be a sufficient slap to Putin. One way or another, however, Washington has to hit him hard for this latest provocation.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., have amassed a huge following among millennials by propagating the myth that the only way to solve society’s problems is to seize wealth and property away from law-abiding citizens so that the federal government has significantly more power over all of our lives.
However, history has proven repeatedly that the collective ownership and management of property eventually leads to death, destruction, coercion, and tyranny. More than 167 million people have been killed, exiled, or imprisoned by socialist and communist regimes in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. That’s comparable to more than 50,000 attacks as deadly as those that occurred on September 11, 2001.
Whenever socialism is tried, it fails miserably – whether it’s in China, Nazi Germany, North Korea, Russia, Venezuela, or Zimbabwe. Yet, despite the mountains of evidence against collectively owning and managing property, Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez continue to allege that anyone who argues against socialism is nothing more than an untrustworthy right-wing propagandist and that all people like Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez really want is to tweak the current system to make things better for the poor.

'MediaBuzz' host Howard Kurtz weighs in on the aftermath of the Mueller report clearing President Trump of collusion claims.
Now that President Trump’s repeated claims of “no collusion” between his campaign and Russia have been supported by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the president called Friday for The New York Times and Washington Post to lose Pulitzer Prizes they received for stories on the collusion allegation.
The president tweeted: “So funny that The New York Times & The Washington Post got a Pulitzer Prize for their coverage (100% NEGATIVE and FAKE!) of Collusion with Russia - And there was No Collusion! So, they were either duped or corrupt? In any event, their prizes should be taken away by the Committee!”
A summary of Mueller’s findings, released last Sunday by Attorney General William Barr, said: “The Special Counsel’s investigation did not find that the Trump campaign or anyone associated with it conspired or coordinated with Russia in its efforts to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election.”

But this should be a moment of honesty and introspection for journalists
– and an admission that they make mistakes and let their biases
influence their work.

The best-case scenario would be for Trump-hating journalists to acknowledge their bias and deception, and pledge to report more fairly.
I have my doubts, though. Many in the media seem more interested in focusing on how to prevent President Trump from being re-elected in 2020.

John Bolton calls Russian presence in Venezuela a ‘direct threat’

John Bolton said on Friday that Russia’s continued military presence in Venezuela could be considered a “direct threat” to international peace.
President Trump’s national security adviser said that any move by Russia to expand operations in the South American country would send a dangerous message.
“We strongly caution actors external to the Western Hemisphere against deploying military assets to Venezuela, or elsewhere in the Hemisphere, with the intent of establishing or expanding military operations,” Bolton said in a statement.
“We will consider such provocative actions as a direct threat to international peace and security in the region.”

Attorney General Bill Barr sent a letter to relevant lawmakers on Capitol Hill Friday afternoon announcing the full Special Counsel report, with redactions required by law, will be released for "everyone" to see in the coming weeks.
"As we have discussed, I share you desire to ensure that Congress and the public have the opportunity to read the Special Counsel's report. We are preparing the report for release, making the redactions that are required. The Special Counsel is assisting us with this process," Barr wrote to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham and House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler. "Our progress is such that I anticipate we will be in a position to released the report by mid-April, if not sooner. Although the President would have the right to assert executive privilege over certain parts of the report, he has stated publicly that he intends to defer to me and, accordingly, there are no plans to submit the report to the White House for a privilege review."
According to the letter, "(1) material subject to Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 6 (e) that by law cannot be made public; (2) material the intelligence community identifies as potentially compromising sensitive sources and methods; (3) material that could affect other ongoing matters, including those that the Special Counsel has referred to other Department offices; and (4) information that would unduly infringe on the personal privacy and reputational interests of peripheral third parties" will not be released.

FBI must hand over docs used to keep Comey memos secret, judge rules

James Comey hopeful Mueller report shows FBI isn't corrupt
Over the objections of the FBI, a federal judge on Thursday sided with CNN in an ongoing lawsuit seeking to make public what the bureau said in two secretive court declarations in October 2017, as part of its aggressive efforts to keep memos documenting former FBI director James Comey's meetings with President Trump hidden.
Comey's memos, whose existence was ultimately leaked with Comey's knowledge and which were later obtained by Congress in redacted form, became a catalyst for the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller in May 2017. CNN filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request that same month, and later filed a lawsuit seeking access to the memos.
In their original complaint, CNN noted that FBI Section Chief David Hardy and FBI Deputy Assistant Director in the Counterintelligence Division David Archey, as well as an attorney in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office, promptly submitted ex parte declarations to the federal district court in Washington, D.C., as part of their argument that publicly releasing the memos would compromise an ongoing probe.

Democratic strategist Jessica Tarlov and TownHall.com editor Katie Pavlich weighed in Thursday on Republican House Intelligence Committee members' call Democratic Chairman Adam Schiff’s resignation.
“Adam Schiff is not going to resign, we know that,” Pavlich said on “The Daily Briefing with Dana Perino,” adding that the members were simply putting their displeasure with Schiff on the record. “We need some accountability for the abuse of power when it came to receiving classified information, making these allegations publicly, then saying you can’t back it up because there is an ongoing investigation and now still saying there’s collusion,” the conservative commentator said.
“It’s a difficult day, I think, for Republicans to be making the case that Adam Schiff should be resigning ... when we hear from The New York Times that the Mueller report is over 300 pages and The Wall Street Journal says it’s less than 1,000," Tarlov countered. "That’s a really big range in there -- and it’s a lot more than four.
“I think it’s clear Mueller wanted to say he [Trump] is not exonerated. There is certainly something on obstruction of justice. We should be seeing the report.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez takes her friends' worries seriously that it’s immoral to have children because of climate change. The freshman congresswoman, however, had only insults for a Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, when he suggested that having more babies would be good for the planet.
The gentlelady from New York is doubtlessly serious in her concern about climate change, and so we’d urge her and her party to drop the reflexive animosity and instead consider the argument Lee made, which has its roots in serious economics. If you believe we face serious threat from climate change and that mankind's current trajectory is a disastrous one, you shouldn’t discourage people from having children. You should encourage them to be fruitful and multiply.

Some members of Congress believe they know which technologies will save us from evil fossil fuels. They point to wind and solar power. If those are to make any noticeable difference, the technologies behind them will need to improve immensely. Maybe it will involve a breakthrough in forestry. Maybe it will involve a clean energy technology that doesn’t exist yet, because the person who will invent it is not yet born.
So if you are considering the morality of having more children because you care about the planet, don't let Ehrlich, Malthus, or Ocasio-Cortez scare you. Go home tonight and make a positive difference in this world.

Border hits ‘breaking point’ in El Paso, CBP commissioner says

The nation’s top border security official said Wednesday that the border is at its "breaking point" during a visit to Texas, where as many as 1,000 migrants crossed into the U.S. and there are not enough agents to respond.
"That breaking point has arrived this week at our border," U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin K. McAleenan said along the border. "CBP is facing an unprecedented humanitarian and border security crisis all along our Southwest border, and nowhere has that crisis manifested more acutely than here in El Paso."
McAleenan said the Border Patrol is on pace for over 100,000 apprehensions and encounters with migrants – mostly from Central America seeking asylum in the U.S. On Monday, agents encountered an estimated 4,000 migrants border-wide, he said.
BORDER AGENTS OVERWHELMED AS TEXAS BEGINS PROCESSING MIGRANT CARAVAN
In February, more than 76,000 migrants were detained, the highest number in 12 years. That figure includes more than 7,000 unaccompanied children. More than 36,000 migrant families have arrived in the El Paso region in fiscal year 2019 compared with about 2,000 at the same time last year, according to CBP data, the El Paso Times reported. The influx is posing new challenges for border agents.

President Trump was enthusiastic about the idea of appointing a second special counsel to review the origins of the Russia investigation when it came up during a meeting Tuesday with Republican senators, a source familiar with the discussions told Fox News.
The president was specifically reacting to GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham's call for another special counsel as well as the senator's vow to look into issues like the alleged abuse of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act at the dawn of the Russia probe. The source told Fox News that the president seemed excited about that course during a Senate GOP lunch on Capitol Hill, which Graham and other senators attended.
The topic of a new special counsel resurfaced this week when Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Graham, R-S.C., urged Attorney General Bill Barr to appoint someone to look into alleged abuses in the case following the conclusion of Robert Mueller's investigation -- which did not uncover evidence of a Trump-Russia conspiracy in 2016, according to Barr's summary.

Now that President Trump has been vindicated and the Fat Lady is singing, it’s high time we hear from another matriarch– the Gray Lady.
The New York Times should apologize for misleading America — again.
Back in 2016, three days after Trump turned the world upside down with his election victory, the publisher and the editor of the Times wrote to subscribers. Their remarkable letter was in large part an apology for failing to understand the Trump phenomenon and for missing the signs that he could win.

Just before Super Bowl Sunday, the big story in the sports section was the lingering pain and problems of retired players with brain injuries.
So be it. But neither Trump nor technology can be blamed for Baquet’s historic error in deciding that basic standards of fairness do not apply to covering this president.
Twice now, that decision has been proven to be sensationally wrong, and added to the growing distrust not only of the Times, but of the media in general.
By all means, the Gray Lady should once again say she is sorry for being wrong and missing the real story. But this time, she should do something about it.

The Green New Deal, a sweeping Democratic proposal for dealing with climate change, fell at the first hurdle Tuesday as the Senate failed to reach the 60 votes necessary to begin debate on the non-binding resolution, with 42 Democrats and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., voting "present."
No senator voted to begin debate on the legislation, while 57 lawmakers voted against breaking the filibuster. Democratic Sens. Doug Jones of Alabama, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona joined 53 Republicans in voting "no." Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, who caucuses with the Democrats, also voted "no."
The vote had been teed up by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., in a bid to make Democratic senators -- including several 2020 presidential candidates -- go on the record about the measure. McConnell had called the proposal "a radical, top-down, socialist makeover of the entire U.S. economy."

Pentagon authorizes $1B for Trump’s border wall

The Pentagon has authorized a payment of $1 billion to begin building a portion of President Trump’s proposed southern border wall, according to US officials.
Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan notified Congress on Monday night about the shift in military funds and asked that the US Army Corps of Engineers “begin planning and executing” the construction of a 57-mile strip of fencing along the Yuma and El Paso sections of the US-Mexico border.
The Department of Homeland Security requested the 18-foot-high wall to be put into place not long after President Trump declared a state of emergency in the region. DHS officials also asked for local roads to be improved and better lighting to be installed.
