Google is aiming to mend fences in Washington after a difficult year that saw its public image take a hit and new scrutiny from lawmakers.
The company was embroiled in a number of controversies from Russia's use of its platforms to interfere in the 2016 election to its influence over think tanks and academic research.
2017 was a long year for the internet giant. In March, Google came under fire from advertisers who pulled millions of dollars worth of ads after it was learned that many of those were running alongside extremist content on YouTube.

Standing on your feet for hours during the freezing cold, not having a single sip of water because there’s no restroom to relieve yourself, and being crushed on all sides by strangers sounds hellish — but some 2 million people do it willingly every year.
So it goes in Times Square in the hours before the ball drops at midnight on Dec. 31. This year’s forecast calls for temperatures in the teens, as well as a ground cover of snow left over from days before. And Brian Alvarado, 18, plans to be right in the thick of it for the fifth year running.

South Korea seizes Panama flag-bearing ship.
South Korea announced Sunday that it has seized another ship suspected of violating U.N. sanctions by selling oil to North Korea at sea – this time a Panama-flagged one.
The announcement Sunday came just days after South Korea said it is holding the crew of a Hong Kong-flagged ship that allegedly handed over oil to a North Korean vessel in October.
The 5,100-ton ship, named the KOTI, is being held in the western port of Pyeongtaek-Dangjin, maritime officials told Yonhap News Agency on Sunday.

AS the rest of Australia rolled out its New Year’s Eve celebrations thousands were being evacuated from a beach on the NSW Central Coast after a fireworks barge caught on fire during NYE celebrations.
The barge caught fire during the 9pm fireworks at Terrigal.
Two pyrotechnicians were forced to jump off a fireworks barge on the NSW Central Coast and suffered minor injuries after a NYE display went horribly wrong.

Crowds were evacuated from the Terrigal beach after the barge caught fire just minutes into the New Year’s Eve fireworks show shortly after 9pm. NSW Fire and Rescue said the two technicians were helped by onlookers before being treated by paramedics.
Witnesses took to Twitter to describe scenes of chaos as the barge sank.
It came as more than one million people descended on Sydney Harbour to watch the city’s famous fireworks.
The clocked ticked over to 2018 and Sydney did what it does best with a dazzling pyrotechnics display that drew cheers and gasps from the huge crowd who packed vantage points around the harbour.

Apple apologized for deliberately slowing down older iPhones to purportedly ensure that they don’t automatically shut off while trying to keep up with a higher computing speed.
“We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We apologize,” reads the company blog post titled “A Message to Our Customers about iPhone Batteries and Performance.”
Still, Apple wanted to clarify what it views as misunderstandings of the situation.

Fox News contributor and writer Stephen Miller has harangued CNN’s coverage, or lack thereof, regarding Iran's anti-government protests throughout the weekend. One tweet caught the attention of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), leading the staunch conservative statesman to compare CNN to the parody site The Onion as well as calling their stories “Iranian Pravda.”

Miller’s tweet highlights the fact that CNN’s lead story earlier this morning, after little to no coverage at all, focused on Iranian protests…but not the anti-government demonstrations. CNN’s lead story reported on the relatively minor gatherings on Saturday supporting the theocratic state and commemorating the anniversary of the end of prior anti-government protests in 2009.
This led Sen. Cruz to give some pointed advice for the alleged "fake-news propaganda” outlet.

"Iranian Pravada" is in reference to the “newspaper” of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, titled “Pravda.” In reality it was not a newspaper at all, but a propaganda machine used to bolster the USSR’s communist leaders and shield its people from the truth. Cruz’s jab at CNN was preceded by a retweet of Mark Levin lambasting western media for not covering these protests.

President Trump should take decisive action in 2018 to support the ouster of the virulently anti-American theocracy that has ruled Iran with an iron fist and threatened its neighbors for the past four decades.
The president’s first step should be to throw American support behind the brave anti-government protesters who have taken to the streets in mass demonstrations across the Islamic Republic since Thursday. The street protests continued Saturday, with demonstrations in cities including the capital of Tehran and Kermanshah.
In a good first step, the U.S. State Department announced Friday that the America “strongly condemns the arrest of peaceful protesters. We urge all nations to publicly support the Iranian people and their demands for basic rights and an end to corruption.”

Classified documents among newly released Huma Abedin emails found on Weiner’s laptop

The State Department Friday released a trove of emails from Huma Abedin that the feds discovered on her husband Anthony Weiner’s laptop — including at least five that were marked as “classified.”
Most of the emails were heavily redacted because they contained classified material — but one that was sent on Nov. 25 2010 was addressed to “Anthony Campaign,” an apparent address belonging to Weiner.
The message contained a list of talking points for then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was prepping to make a call to Prince Saud of Saudi Arabia to warn him about sensitive documents that had been given to WikiLeaks by then-Army intelligence officer Bradley Manning.
“I deeply regret the likely upcoming WikiLeaks disclosure,” read one of the talking points.
“This appears to be the result of an illegal act in which a fully cleared intelligence officer stole information and gave it to a website. The person responsible will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law” the message continued.

The crew of a Hong Kong-flagged ship that allegedly violated U.N. sanctions by transferring oil to a North Korean vessel in October is being held in South Korea until a full inspection is sent to the Security Council, officials announced Friday.
The Lighthouse Winmore is believed to have transferred about 600 tons of refined petroleum products to the North Korean ship, the Sam Jong 2, in international waters in the East China Sea on Oct. 19, after leaving the South Korean port of Yeosu, a South Korean Foreign Ministry official told the Associated Press.
The announcement came on the same day Defense Secretary James Mattis told Fox News that he believes the world will exert “increased pressure” on North Korea in the coming months following the recent maritime incidents.

Here’s How Much The US Would Save If Trump Cut Aid To Every Country That Voted ‘Nay’ On Jerusalem Move

There was global outcry after President Trump announced his intention to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, but that might actually turn out to be a good thing for America’s economy if the White House makes good on the threat made to the countries opposing the move.
The move officially recognizes the city as the capital of Israel. Jerusalem has long been considered a bargaining chip between Israel and Palestine, dating back to Israel’s military occupation of the historic city during the Six-Day War.
The bold move by the Trump administration sparked international backlash, so much so that a referendum condemning the move was put forward at the United Nations.
Nikki Haley said that the United States would be “taking note” of the countries that “disrespected” America by voting in favor of the resolution, and President Trump said bluntly that the countries who don’t vote with the U.S. will have their funding cut.
“They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us. Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care.”

So what if Trump actually gutted funding for those 128 countries? Well, The Daily Caller did the math.
According to USAid.gov, which catalogs all country-by-country financial obligations the U.S. holds with the rest of the world, Trump’s threat would save the United States more than $24 billion — in just one year.
The numbers below are based on what the U.S. was obligated to pay in 2016 to each of the countries that voted against us in the UN vote last week. Obligations are defined as the amount the United States is legally bound to pony up either in that year or the future.
“A binding agreement that will result in outlays, immediately or in the future. Budget resources must be available before obligations can be legally incurred.”
The obligations may differ from the actual cash disbursements given in any given year, but they best reflect our financial obligations to the country in question.

GOP lawmaker calls for Mueller recusal: 'His witch hunt must end'

An Arizona Republican is calling on special counsel Robert Mueller to recuse himself from the investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia in an op-ed published Wednesday.
Writing in USA Today, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) said Mueller's investigation has gone "far beyond the scope of his original charge."
"Unfortunately, taxpayer resources are being used to scrutinize anyone and anything that fits into a preconceived notion that Russia colluded with the Trump campaign to 'fix the election,'" Biggs said.
"Mueller has demonstrated he is incapable of leading a focused, unbiased review of his initial assignment," he added. "His witch hunt must end."

A NORTH Korean soldier who defected this year may have been vaccinated against anthrax, sparking fears Kim Jong-un’s regime have weaponised the killer disease.
South Korean authorities have revealed a defector was found to have antibodies in his bloodstream which may suggest he has developed an immunity, according to The Sun.
The soldier’s identity has not been revealed but it is believed he was either exposed to anthrax or directly vaccinated against it, reports UPI.
A South Korean intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity to South Korean news network Channel A, said: “Anthrax antibodies have been found in the North Korean soldier who defected this year.”
The deadly disease can kill at least 80 per cent of those who are exposed to the bacterium in 24 hours, unless antibiotics are taken or vaccination is available.
It is understood South Korea’s military have yet to build up enough stocks of the anthrax vaccine.
Defence Ministry spokeswoman Choi Hyun-soo has said an anthrax “vaccine is expected to be developed by the end of 2019”.

Several North Korean defectors who lived near the Hermit Kingdom’s nuclear test site showed signs of suspected radiation exposure, the South Korean government said — findings that followed experts’ previous warnings that the crumbling site could cause radioactive contamination in the area.
Researchers added that they couldn’t confirm if the possible radiation exposure found in four defectors was related to the Punggye-ri site, where North Korea conducted all six of its nuclear tests, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing the South’s Unification Ministry spokesman Baik Tae-hyun.

US reconnaissance photographs have caught Chinese ships selling oil to North Korean vessels some 30 times, a South Korean news service claims.
The Chosunilbo cites South Korean government sources as revealing the photos captured numerous vessels engaging in the activity in the West Sea between China and South Korea.
“We need to focus on the fact that the illicit trade started after a UN Security Council resolution in September drastically capped North Korea’s imports of refined petroleum products,” the news service quotes a government official as saying.

Traces of anthrax antibodies were discovered in the system of a North Korean soldier who had defected to South Korea at some point in 2017, a local South Korean television station reported Tuesday.
The soldier’s name and exact date of defection were not disclosed. But the defector is said to have been exposed to or vaccinated for anthrax, a serious bacterial disease, UPI reported, citing Channel A. They reportedly became immune to the disease before defection.
“Anthrax antibodies have been found in the North Korean soldier who defected this year,” according an unnamed South Korean official speaking to Channel A.
The news comes amid earlier reports that North Korea was beginning tests to mount anthrax onto intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the U.S.

GUATEMALA CITY — Guatemala’s president announced on Christmas Eve that the Central American country will move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, becoming the first nation to follow the lead of U.S. President Donald Trump in ordering the change.
Guatemala was one of nine nations that voted with the United States and Israel on Thursday when the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a non-binding resolution denouncing Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

This week, President Trump formally unveiled his National Security Strategy. Much has been made of the Trump administration’s ability to introduce this document (something required by Congress since the 1986 Goldwater-Nichols Act) in the first year of its first term, and for good reason. Trump’s predecessors often struggled to articulate a coherent path forward on national security, and none have done so so quickly.
Already, many observers are analyzing specific parts of the Trump NSS and attempting to parse its language. But perhaps the best way to assess the document is to take a long-term view. Successful national security strategies usually transform into doctrine over the course of a given administration. It is still far too early to talk about a “Trump Doctrine.” Those take time to form and are an amalgam of rhetoric, policy, practice, and institutional commitment. But we now have a window into what that might look like.
