Syria crisis: Assad 'gives amnesty for uprising crimes'

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad has granted a general amnesty for all crimes committed during the 10-month uprising, state-run media report.

It would apply to army deserters who turned themselves in before the end of January, peaceful protesters and those who handed in unlicensed weapons, Sana state news agency is quoted as saying.

The UN says more than 14,000 people are in detention.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged Mr Assad to end the violence.

"Stop the violence. Stop killing your people. The path of repression is a dead end," Mr Ban said in a speech at a conference on Arab world democracy in Beirut.

President Assad has issued several prisoner amnesties since the start of the uprising in March, but thousands of people are believed to remain in prison.

The BBC's Jonathan Head in neighbouring Turkey says the latest amnesty offer still does not address the issue of how the conflict may be brought to an end.

Tens of thousands of people across Syria continue to take to the streets calling for an end to the Assad regime - defying a crackdown that, the UN says, has killed 5,000 people.

In a rare public address last week, President Assad again accused international powers of trying to destabilise Syria, and vowed to crush "terrorists" with an "iron fist".

On Saturday, the ruler of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, said Arab countries should send troops into Syria to end the bloodshed.

"For such a situation to stop the killing... some troops should go to stop the killing," he told US television channel CBS for a programme to be aired on Sunday.

It is the first time an Arab leader has publicly called for military intervention in Syria.

Saudi Arabia regards Iran as the ‘head of the snake’. It wanted Iran attacked in last years of the Bush administration, but a direct attack, stripping veil from THE COVERT WAR already being waged, would be enormously dangerous to countries waging it. This is what hinders west from going ahead, not the catastrophe that such a war would be for the people of Syria, Iran & the region.

No doubt Assad has his eyes on the Nobel Peace Prize - they did give one to Yasser Arafat for agreeing to stop committing acts of genocide, after all.

When you start to make Ahmadinejad look like a more grounded leader, you have utterly failed as a world power.

Good luck to the people of Syria and the rest of the Middle East, and China for that matter, in putting an end to this tyranny

Funny thing about living in a country where you have a free press, civil rights democracy and tolerance. For some reason armed uprisings are not very common.

By granting amnesty he is absolving himself of the massacre of his own people.

This is like a wolf inviting lambs for dinner

#32. BluesBerry: Why would you think that Syria is an obstacle to Western action against Iran? I'm sure the West will be quite capable of taking out Iran's nuclear capabilities regardless of anything that is happening in Syria, and it may well come to that if Iran continues to lie to the World about its intentions...

Arab League useless as usual- Qatar calls for armed intervention- they'll ask the West as usual (at our expense as usual) the West goes in and after a few days the same people call us 'crusaders' and 'imperialists' and we shouldn't be in Arab land.
Should we really be the fall guys to the Saudis and Gulf States?

Assad's amnesty offer would hold more water if he also released the those that are already being held in detention...

Assad may be bad, I don't care. At least he represents a secular regime and doesn't pose a threat to us. All recent changes in middle east brought to power radical Islamists and sharia law which have nothing to do with democracy as well as being a real threat to us. We shouldnt be played by the pseudo liberators and get involved, they should take care of their problems themselves.

I doubt the protestors feel they have committed any crime that an amnesty absolves them of. Therefore I won't hold my breath for this move to stop the uprising in its tracks. How deluded is Assad? Seriously?
