Sen. Tuberville to Newsmax: Flatten the Filibuster

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., took to Newsmax on Monday to call on the handful of his fellow recalcitrant Republicans in the upper chamber to end the tradition of the filibuster so Congress can pass the SAVE America Act, which deals with elections.
On "Rob Schmitt Tonight," the first-term senator and celebrated former college football coach of Mississippi, Auburn, Texas Tech, and Cincinnati railed against the two-century-old tradition originally designed to allow endless debate.
The procedure has evolved into requiring 60 votes to pass any legislation.
"If we don't pass this, we'll never have another secure election in this country because we'll [Republicans will] never have any kind of majority again," Tuberville said. "It's just amazing to me how we're letting this opportunity pass us by.
"But we got about four or five Republicans that just refused to bust the filibuster."

The U.S. Department of State on March 22 again advised American citizens around the world to “exercise increased caution,” renewing a worldwide caution alert that was issued by the agency in late February amid concerns about the Iran war.
“Americans abroad should follow the guidance in security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” the State Department said in an advisory, also noting that citizens in the Middle East should pay particular attention because U.S. diplomatic buildings have been targeted “even outside the Middle East.”
“Periodic airspace closures may cause travel disruptions.”
Groups that back the Iranian regime “may target other U.S. interests overseas or locations associated with the United States” or Americans around the world, it said.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela Charles Shapiro said Monday that Cuba's economic and political system has collapsed, driving a mass exodus and worsening conditions across the island.
Speaking on Newsmax's "American Agenda," Shapiro described a country facing long-term structural failure, with millions of citizens fleeing and basic infrastructure deteriorating.
"The system has failed in Cuba. The economic system has failed," Shapiro said.
"Two million people have left the country in the last three years out of a total population of 11 million."
"The scale of that migration underscores the severity of the crisis," he added, noting that many Cubans no longer see a viable future under the current government.

President Donald Trump drew a hard line Sunday night, telling Senate Republicans there will be no Department of Homeland Security funding deal until Democrats vote to pass the SAVE America Act, the commonsense election integrity bill requiring proof of citizenship and photo ID to vote in federal elections.
Trump made the demand in a lengthy Truth Social post late Sunday.
"I don't think we should make any deal with the Crazy, Country Destroying, Radical Left Democrats unless, and until, they Vote with Republicans to pass 'THE SAVE AMERICA ACT,'" he wrote. He went further, calling any arrangement that gave Democrats a $5 billion cut in ICE funding — even a disguised one — flatly "unacceptable" without their buy-in on voter ID, proof of citizenship, no mail-in voting, all-paper ballots, no men in women's sports, and an end to transgender procedures on children. "Put it all together," he demanded, "and also, let Leader Thune clearly identify those few 'Republicans' that are Voting against AMERICA. They will never be elected again!"
The DHS has been operating without funding for over a month now because Democrats have blocked a House-passed funding bill five times. Trump has been escalating pressure on the Senate for weeks. Earlier this month, he told Congress that he would not sign other legislation until the SAVE America Act passes. "I, as President, will not sign other Bills until this is passed," he declared. Last week, he went one step further, warning that any Republican lawmaker who votes against the bill will permanently lose his endorsement. "Only sick, demented, or deranged people in the House or Senate could vote against THE SAVE AMERICA ACT," he wrote, adding, "I WILL NEVER (EVER!) ENDORSE ANYONE WHO VOTES AGAINST 'SAVE AMERICA!!!'"
His previous move was another bold one. Starting Monday, ICE is deploying agents to airports to handle security, essentially daring Democrats to keep playing games with funding.
And now he's tying all of it — every last inch — to election integrity.
Trump also called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune to kill the filibuster and to keep senators in Washington through Easter if that's what it takes to get the job done. The message to wobbly Republicans: there's nowhere to hide.

As we reported, President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to Iran Saturday, declaring that if they didn’t fully open the Strait of Hormuz by Monday evening, we would strike their power plants and send them back into the dark ages.
On Monday morning, however, he said on social media that ongoing talks were fruitful and that he would pause those strikes for a period of five days.
He gave more information on the situation as he spoke to reporters Monday morning before embarking on Air Force One to depart West Palm Beach, Florida, (with a reported stop in Tennessee for a “Memphis Safe Task Force” roundtable) to head back to Washington D.C.
They'd better make a deal, he declared, or we’ll just keep bombing them:

The United States is pushing back against China’s influence at the United Nations, citing competition over staffing and leadership roles and support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, according to U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz.
Speaking at a congressional field hearing on March 20, Waltz, who took up the U.N. post last year, said the People’s Republic of China (PRC) was leveraging its contributions to expand its influence within the U.N. system.
“We have seen the Chinese very aggressively leverage their funding with demands in terms of positions. ... Where we’re most engaged are some of these other organizations that affect [U.S.] industry,” Waltz said, pointing to U.N. specialized agencies of the International Maritime Organization, the International Telecommunications Union, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Intellectual Property Organization.

Once known as the “world’s factory floor,” Dongguan, China, in the Pearl River Delta region, is growing quiet.
Streets that once pulsed with shift changes are now largely empty. Factories have shuttered, rural migrant workers have left, and small businesses that depended on industrial traffic are disappearing. Official data points to a broader slowdown, including a deepening property slump, weakening manufacturing activity, and persistently high youth unemployment.
The Epoch Times spoke to multiple Chinese workers and insiders—who requested anonymity out of fears of reprisal—over the slowdown. They suggested a deeper problem—one that is rooted in a sustained loss of confidence in China’s economic system itself.

The United States may need to "escalate" its attacks against Iran to be able to wind down the war, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday, after President Donald Trump gave seemingly contradictory trajectories for the US military campaign.
Trump on Saturday threatened to "obliterate" Iranian energy plants if Tehran did not fully open the pivotal Strait of Hormuz, just a day after saying US objectives were "very close" and that he was considering "winding down" the war.
Asked on NBC's "Meet the Press" if Trump was winding down or escalating the war, Bessent said: "They're not mutually exclusive. Sometimes you have to escalate to de-escalate."
"This is the only language the Iranians understand," he argued.
Iran's threats against shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of global gas and oil supplies flows, have caused energy prices to soar around the world.
Bessent, as part of efforts to abate market turmoil, has temporarily lifted US sanctions on Iranian and Russian oil that had already been loaded onto ships.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz said Sunday that "all options should be on the table" as tensions escalate between the U.S. and Iran, including potential strikes on an Iranian nuclear power plants and other vital infrastructure.
"Well, I would never take anything off the table for the president, certainly not on national television," Waltz told CBS News' "Face the Nation."
"However, there are larger plants," he added. "There is one outside of Tehran. There are others outside of other cities that are gas-fired, thermal-powered."
He added that it's important to understand that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is a "declared terrorist organization, not only by us but in a number of European countries" and that it "controls a huge swath of Iran's critical infrastructure, their economy, and certainly many of their governing institutions.

President Donald Trump escalated his political attacks on Democrats on Sunday as he pressed Congress to pass the SAVE America Act and blamed Democrat resistance for a prolonged Department of Homeland Security funding fight that has disrupted airport operations and left thousands of federal security workers without pay.
In a Truth Social message posted Sunday, Trump wrote: "Now with the death of Iran, the greatest enemy America has is the Radical Left, Highly Incompetent, Democrat Party! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DJT," sharpening his criticism of political opponents while linking foreign policy tensions to domestic legislative battles.

Elon Musk has offered to pay the salaries of TSA workers who are currently working without pay because of the partial Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown.
Congress is locked in a standoff over DHS funding, with Democrats demanding reforms as a condition of supporting funding. Republicans are refusing to budge on the issue, arguing that reforms should be taken up separately.
In a post on X, Musk wrote, “I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country.”

As the Iran war puts shipping in the Strait of Hormuz near a complete halt, President Donald Trump has called on countries to join a naval escort to reopen the crucial passage. The Chinese communist regime’s response exposes its true intent, while Taiwan has an opportunity to better position itself on the international stage, according to analysts.
About 20 percent of the world’s oil supply and 20 percent of its supply of liquefied natural gas pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s disruption of shipping in the waterway has a serious impact on global energy supplies, especially in Asian countries.
According to public data, China accounts for 37 percent of the crude oil transported through the strait, followed by India at 14.7 percent, South Korea at 12 percent, and Japan at 10.9 percent. Approximately 70 percent of Taiwan’s crude oil imports and 38 percent of its natural gas supply transit the waterway.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) joined a growing list of countries that have pledged support for safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz.
“We express our readiness to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait,” a joint statement released on March 21 read.
“We welcome the commitment of nations who are engaging in preparatory planning.”
As of Saturday, 22 countries have pledged to ensure safe navigation through the crucial passageway located just off the Southwest coast of Iran, through which around one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas passes.

The Chinese Communist Party is short on pilots. And it might be getting help from its main adversary, the United States. But on Capitol Hill, a senator is calling on the Transportation Security Administration to ban U.S. flight schools from enrolling our adversaries. The TSA should end this extraordinary and self-defeating practice without delay.
China is engaged in the largest military buildup in modern history. It is girding itself for war by building everything from underground hospitals to a military command center much larger than the Pentagon. China is an industrial heavyweight with a manufacturing capacity that dwarfs that of previous U.S. foes such as Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. Its shipbuilding capacity is 232 times greater than that of the United States. In 2024 alone, one Chinese company produced more ships than the U.S. has managed in the past eight decades.

Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., said Saturday that U.S. efforts against Iran are "90% there" in achieving President Donald Trump’s stated objectives, while cautioning that the final goals could prove the most difficult.
Appearing on Newmax's "America Right Now," Marshall said, "I think we need to fulfill the president’s four goals.
"It’s so clear exactly what the president has laid out, and I think we’re 90% there," he said.
He outlined those goals as efforts "to destroy Iranian missiles, their nukes, their Navy, and prevent them from being able to arm and train terrorists in the future."
Calling the operation a "very successful mission so far," Marshall added, "we’re 90% there," while also acknowledging the human cost, saying the nation must "mourn the loss of 13 American soldiers and maybe another dozen seriously injured."

A few hours later, State Security agents in Santiago de Cuba, the island’s second-largest city, summoned Lambert Ortega and ordered her to delete the poll.

The Cuban Communist Party has shown an astonishing resilience over six decades in power.
Whether it's the United States' trade embargo to counter Fidel Castro's 1959 revolution or the widespread starvation of the "special period" that followed the breakup of its Cold War patron, the Soviet Union, both U.S. hostilities and calamities of its own making have proven no match for the country's leadership.
But perhaps none of those crises pose as grave a threat as the one triggered by an all-but-declared naval siege by the Trump administration as it seeks to force regime change in the wake of its successful ousting of Cuba's longtime ally, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Even as he fights a war with Iran, President Donald Trump this week said he believes he'll have "the honor of taking Cuba" soon. While it wasn't clear exactly what he meant, the U.S. is looking for President Miguel Diaz-Canel to leave power as part of ongoing talks with Havana that could avert some kind of U.S. military intervention.
Without declaring a formal blockade, Trump and his administration have already crippled trade with the island.

The Cuban Communist Party has shown an astonishing resilience over six decades in power.
Whether it's the United States' trade embargo to counter Fidel Castro's 1959 revolution or the widespread starvation of the "special period" that followed the breakup of its Cold War patron, the Soviet Union, both U.S. hostilities and calamities of its own making have proven no match for the country's leadership.
But perhaps none of those crises pose as grave a threat as the one triggered by an all-but-declared naval siege by the Trump administration as it seeks to force regime change in the wake of its successful ousting of Cuba's longtime ally, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Even as he fights a war with Iran, President Donald Trump this week said he believes he'll have "the honor of taking Cuba" soon. While it wasn't clear exactly what he meant, the U.S. is looking for President Miguel Diaz-Canel to leave power as part of ongoing talks with Havana that could avert some kind of U.S. military intervention.
Without declaring a formal blockade, Trump and his administration have already crippled trade with the island.

OPINION:
President Trump’s latest “Made in America” executive order takes direct aim at a global shell game in which foreign producers and multinational firms disguise, stretch and outright misrepresent where their products come from.
This practice ranges from lightly processed imports relabeled as “American Made” to marketing campaigns deliberately crafted to imply domestic production where little exists. This abuse of ambiguity has gone on far too long.
Americans want to buy American. They know, just as Mr. Trump does, that domestic production means better jobs, stronger supply chains and a defense industrial base we can rely on in a crisis. That choice works only if the information is honest.
Right now, too often, it isn’t.
Let’s be precise about the deception, starting with labeling. Under federal standards, an unqualified “Made in USA” claim is supposed to mean a product is “all or virtually all” made here, but companies have learned to work the edges.
They use phrases such as “assembled in USA,” “Designed in America” or “Manufactured in the USA with global materials.” This language sounds patriotic but often masks the reality that key components, and sometimes most of the value, come from overseas.
Then there’s the production side. A product can be largely manufactured abroad, shipped into the U.S. or a partner country, undergo minimal finishing — such as packaging, simple assembly or cosmetic modification — and emerge with branding that strongly suggests domestic origin.
In some sectors, the domestic contribution is only a small fraction of total value, falling well short of the “substantial transformation” required under U.S. law, while the marketing suggests exactly the opposite.

Universities Abandon Truth and Lose Their Way

The University of Notre Dame generated plenty of headlines recently — most of them critical — when it named political science professor Susan Ostermann to lead the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies in the Keough School of Global Affairs.
While no one challenged Ostermann's scholarly bona fides, Catholics around the country were profoundly distressed by the announcement, given Ostermann's zealous advocacy for abortion, her role in the eugenicist Population Council, and her characterization of anti-abortion activists as misogynists, racists and white supremacists.
A number of American bishops spoke out against the appointment, including Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades, who leads the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, which includes Notre Dame.
And while the university consistently expressed its support for Ostermann, she eventually withdrew from the position, which was to have started this coming summer.
Last week, the head of Notre Dame's de Nicola Center for Ethics and Culture, Jennifer Newsome Martin, published a thoughtful essay on the matter in Public Discourse. In that essay, titled "How Catholic Should a Catholic Institution Be?"
Newsome Martin references the writings of the late Alasdair MacIntyre (a de Nicola Center Senior Distinguished Research Fellow until his death last year) who argued that today's research universities "do not share any clear agreement on what constitutes rational inquiry," and will therefore "simply tolerate 'limitless disagreement.'"
Martin agrees with MacIntyre that at Catholic institutions like Notre Dame, "there are foundational points that 'by their very nature cannot accept the indifference presupposed by such tolerance; standpoints which invite rejection rather than toleration.'"
Martin states that among those foundational points is the magisterium of the Catholic Church that "recognizes and upholds the sanctity of human life from conception until natural death."
Policies that articulate the university's commitment to the teachings of the Church must be reflected by its decisions.
"These commitments," Martin concludes, "cannot be affirmed in the abstract while being undermined in the concrete."
Martin's admonitions for a Catholic university are clear.
But what of those institutions of higher education that are not religiously affiliated?
Where can they find common ground?
The most important point of common ground between both should be the recognition, pursuit and dissemination of truth.
In that vein, a recent trend is worth noting.

The joint American-Israeli military operation against the Iranian regime is now three weeks old, but there is another war — a more silent one — raging here on the home front.
President Donald Trump's second administration is facing a highly coordinated shadow war — one waged both by some influential outside voices on the right and, more dangerously, by their subversive allies within Trump's very own government.
If this campaign is not confronted and decisively defeated, the result will be calamitous: a second Trump term that drifts into lame-duck status not due to a voter backlash but because of an insurrection from within.
What this column has previously referred to as "Operation Divide MAGA" has reached fever pitch. And Trump, to his great credit, has begun to settle all the MAGA family business. But an even more concerted effort is needed to clean out the Augean Stables once and for all.
First, let's take a step back.
In any healthy political coalition or movement, debate is inevitable and often desirable.
But what we have seen from certain high-profile podcasters, such as Tucker Carlson and Megyn Kelly, is nothing less than a full-scale assault on Trump and his agenda.
These provocateurs first outed themselves last summer, when they all but accused Trump of covering up a global (Mossad-tied?) pedophile ring over his Justice Department's handling of the Epstein files.
But above all, the podcasters' subversion has focused on foreign policy — most recently, on Iran and Operation Epic Fury.
Trump is a conservative nationalist.
His foreign policy is rooted in confidence and "peace through strength"-style deterrence.
Yet Carlson, Kelly and their fellow travelers have blasted the Iran conflict as everything from "evil" (Carlson) to "clearly Israel's war" (Kelly).
The not-so-dynamic duo is thus accusing the man they quite literally campaigned for in 2024 of engaging in heinous acts and of being the unwitting dupe of a foreign government.
True, Carlson and Kelly do not actually speak for the MAGA base.
A brand-new poll from J.L. Partners shows that 83% of Republican voters support Epic Fury. Moreover, Republicans agree with Trump over Carlson and Kelly on foreign policy by a whopping 84%-6% margin.
But still, their platforms are enormous.
When Carlson, Kelly and their allies consistently excoriate the leading priorities of the administration they purport to support, the effect is Republican voter confusion, resentment, and depression as we head toward November in a midterm election year.
Even worse, the shadow war subversives are not merely shouting into their microphones from the rafters.
They have allies inside the administration, with whom they are all but assuredly coordinating, engaging in outright sabotage against the one man — the president of the United States — who was actually elected to wield the "executive power" of the federal government and serve as commander in chief.
The most alarming developments are emerging from within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard.
A former Democratic Hawaii congresswoman with a pro-Moscow slant once seen as a heterodox ally, Gabbard now oversees an environment that increasingly bears the markings of an anti-MAGA coup.
Take Gabbard's recent rehiring of Dan Caldwell.
Dismissed last year by his (former longtime friend) Secretary of War Pete Hegseth amid allegations of leaking, Caldwell is now back in a highly sensitive role.
Leaks of this nature are not bureaucratic slip-ups; they are direct assaults on national security and the integrity of the constitutional chain of command.
It's difficult to interpret the isolationist-leaning Gabbard's move as anything other than a direct shot across the bow at Hegseth — and, by extension, the boss Hegseth has so passionately defended since Epic Fury began, Trump.
Consider also Joe Kent, who until recently served under Gabbard as director of the National Counterterrorism Center. Kent very recently resigned in flamboyant fashion, rationalizing his stunt with hyper-conspiratorial, antisemitic rhetoric better suited for a Code Pink rally than government letterhead.
Within hours after tendering his resignation, Kent announced he would be joining -- who else? — Carlson to tell his story.
An alleged serial leaker, Kent is now under FBI investigation for spilling national security secrets. Unsurprisingly, Iranian regime propaganda television gobbled up the interview and regurgitated it for an impressionable English-speaking audience.
That Kent came to Carlson's platform to try to get ahead of the FBI investigation revelation is not coincidence.
It's all orchestrated.
After being fired by Hegseth last year, Caldwell similarly ran to Carlson to tell his side of the story. Moreover, one of Caldwell's higher-ranking colleagues at ODNI, Will Ruger, shares Caldwell's professional background in the isolationist Koch network. Surprise!
The White House Presidential Personnel Office, formerly directed by ex-Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., staffer Sergio Gor (since shipped halfway around the world to India), has allowed in individuals across the defense, intelligence and national security spaces that are functionally anti-MAGA.
Perhaps this was done for self-serving reasons.
Perhaps Gor and PPO were under the understanding that MAGA is something other than what the boss says it is. Frankly, it doesn't really matter.
Because the boss has now spoken.
He's cast Carlson and Kelly out of MAGA in emphatic fashion. And after Kent's obnoxious resignation stunt, Trump said of those (like Kent) who do not believe Iran is a threat to the United States, "We don't want those people."
Translation: Get out. The message couldn't possibly be clearer.
But is Trump's PPO listening?
Is Gabbard's ODNI fully in line?
Gabbard, in U.S. Senate testimony this week, couldn't bring herself to agree with her boss's assessment that Iran posed an "imminent threat" prior to the launch of Epic Fury.
It's time for the president to team up with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and other arch-loyalists, such as Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, and clean house.
The internal anti-MAGA sabotage must be ended, and the external anti-MAGA sabotage must be combated.
The success of the remainder of Trump's second term hangs in the balance.

What is it with the fickle Europeans? I know that they have different interests than ours, but we’re both Western entities. You’d think that we’d be more collaborative on the effort to disarm and denuclearize Iran. But a lot of strange things are happening.
The traditional use of the Diego Garcia critical airbase in the Indian Ocean, run by the British, but often leased to us and allowed us to have a very valuable base for our long-range bombers. The British initially refused to allow us to use it. And then, only under conditions that it would be used for defensive purposes.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says the Chinese regime is a threat to both Canada and the United States, and the two countries should “look at the big picture” instead of treating each other as rivals.
Poilievre made his comments during a speech on Canada-U.S. relations at the Foreign Policy Association in New York on March 19.
The Tory leader noted that the West erred in allowing the Chinese communist regime to “sneak up on us” shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
“Beijing’s communist regime was able to pursue economic enrichment without the corresponding political liberalization that the West had expected. And then one day, the West woke up, and we found that much of our industrial cart lands had been hollowed out,” Poilievre said.

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) was one of the world’s first central banks to push a digital currency. The initial launch dates back to September 2020. Other central banks, most notably the Federal Reserve in the United States and the European Union’s European Central Bank, have talked about launching a digital dollar and a digital euro, respectively, but have not yet issued one.
Beijing has taken the lead because it has two ambitions not shared by these and other central banks—one, an intense desire for domestic surveillance of its population; and two, the goal of using the yuan to challenge the dollar’s supreme role as the world’s global currency. The slow take-up of the digital yuan suggests that Beijing will have to wait a long time to fulfil its ambitions, if it ever can.

Communist Cuba has been a thorn in America’s side for nearly 70 years. Every president since Dwight Eisenhower has had to deal with a hostile regime less than 90 miles from the United States. But recent events have presented President Donald Trump with a historic opportunity, and the president should seize it.
The Cuban regime, nominally headed by President Manuel Diaz-Canel but in fact controlled by an oppressive security apparatus, is tottering. Now is the time for the Trump administration to increase diplomatic pressure so that a threat close to our shores can swiftly arrive in its proper place on the ash heap of history.
