'Big Story': Trump celebrates GOP capture of Kentucky House seat long held by Democrats

The Republican Party in Kentucky flipped a state House seat in a special election this week, earning praise from President Trump.
Preliminary results in District 99 showed Republican Richard White defeating Democrat Bill Redwine on Tuesday by around 1,000 votes, the Courier-Journal reported.
The seat had previously been held by Democrats for more than three decades, the latest being Rocky Adkins, who took a post in Gov. Matt Beshear's Cabinet.
GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and Trump celebrated a win in the local Kentucky election.
"It’s a district Democrats held for 33 YEARS, where Democrats outnumber Republicans by double digits, and one the Democrat governor carried in 2019," McDaniel said.

China officials knew of coronavirus in December, ordered cover-up, report says

Chinese scientists knew about the coronavirus and its deadly effects as early as December — but were ordered by government officials to suppress the evidence, according to a report.
In late December, several genomics companies tested samples from sick patients in Wuhan — the center of the coronavirus outbreak — and noticed alarming similarities between their illnesses and the 2002 SARS virus, the Sunday Times of London reported, citing Chinese business news site Caixin Global.
The researchers alerted Beijing of their findings — and on Jan. 3, received a gag order from China’s National Health Commission, with instructions to destroy the samples.
Rather than hunkering down to contain the virus, Wuhan officials went ahead with their annual potluck dinner for 40,000 families.

Chinese scientists knew about the coronavirus and its deadly effects as early as December — but were ordered by government officials to suppress the evidence, according to a report.

A Washington State woman in her 50s is the first person in the United States to die from coronavirus, officials confirmed Saturday.
President Trump identified the victim as a “high risk” patient and said during a news conference she had died overnight.
The American fatality was a resident of King County, which includes Seattle, according to the Washington Department of Health, KIRO 7 reported. She died at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland.
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said the death marked “a sad day in our state.”

Pope Francis remained ill with an apparent cold on Friday — and canceled official audiences for a second day, Vatican officials announced.
The 83-year-old pontiff celebrated morning Mass as usual and greeted congregants at the end, the Vatican said. He planned to go on with his private meeting schedule, but opted to cancel his official audiences.
“The Holy Father celebrated Mass this morning and at the end, as usual, greeted the participants, but decided to postpone today’s official audiences,” spokesman Matteo Bruni said on Friday, the Vatican News reported. “The meetings on the agenda at Casa Santa Marta continue regularly.”

A British man who was sickened by the coronavirus while onboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship has died, reports citing the Japanese health ministry said.
The man, who had been in quarantine in Japan after testing positive for the virus, marks the first foreign passenger on the ship to die, according to Kyodo News. It would also mark the first fatality involving a British citizen, according to Sky News.
The health ministry did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for additional comment.

Over 700 other passengers and crew who were on the ship were infected with COVID-19, which had for several weeks marked the largest instance of communal spread. South Korea has since surpassed the case count with 2,337 confirmed illnesses of its own.

The coronavirus marks the biggest challenge for Chinese President Xi Jinping since he took control of the country in 2012.
Tens of millions remain in quarantine, economic growth forecasts have been slashed, countries around the world have closed their borders to Chinese arrivals and people are furious with the authoritarian government.
The virus has now infected more than 83,000 people around the world, with 2800 deaths. While the vast majority of these cases are contained to China, it’s now spread to every continent besides Antarctica, prompting fears of a pandemic.
Mr Xi – and his obsession with ascending China to a leading global superpower – is largely to blame.

The first — and only — coronavirus clinic in New South Wales has been swamped by hundreds of suspected cases since opening its doors last month, authorities say.
The clinic, located next to the emergency department of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in the inner west Sydney suburb of Camperdown, is currently staffed by just one doctor and two nurses.
According to Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) records, the trio has seen a whopping 300 people who presented with symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 — the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19 disease — in a period of less than 30 days.

The first — and only — coronavirus clinic in New South Wales has been swamped by hundreds of suspected cases since opening its doors last month, authorities say.
The clinic, located next to the emergency department of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in the inner west Sydney suburb of Camperdown, is currently staffed by just one doctor and two nurses.
According to Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) records, the trio has seen a whopping 300 people who presented with symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 — the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19 disease — in a period of less than 30 days.

Trump's India statecraft is forward-thinking and necessary

President Trump's successful trip to India this week will develop a critical prospective alliance while undermining one of the most common criticisms leveled against this president: that Trump cares little for democratic values or for allies.
This was certainly not evident from Trump's rhetoric and effort during his short visit. Instead, addressing more than 100,000 people in a packed Ahmedabad stadium, Trump offered a bright vision of future friendship between the world's most powerful and its most populous democracies. As the BBC observed, "It was a good speech."
Addressing democratic values, Trump carefully hinted at concerns over India's treatment of its Muslim citizens. While praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the president celebrated an India in which "millions upon millions of Hindus and Muslims, Sikhs and Jains, Buddhists, Christians, and Jews worship side by side in harmony." Building on this theme of democracies made strong by diversity, Trump called for "every Indian, north and south, Hindu or Muslim, Jewish and Christian, young and old, take pride in the glories of your past, unite for an even brighter future, and let our two nations always stand together as powerful defenders of peace and liberty."
Asked at a later press conference whether he had raised the issue of religious liberty in private meetings with Modi, Trump confirmed that he had done so. Describing shared U.S. and Indian efforts against terrorists, Trump threw Modi a line that President Barack Obama would have been highly unlikely to offer. He promised Indians that America would continue "to crack down on the terrorist organizations and militants that operate on the Pakistani border." Trump's strong stance here will go down well with an Indian government and people still reeling from a Pakistani terrorist attack last February that killed 40 people. Equally important is the fact that Trump's robust stance on Pakistani terrorist threats stands in contrast to unhelpful positions of calculated indifference taken by China and Russia.

Pope Francis sick a day after supporting coronavirus sufferers

Pope Francis has come down with a “slight indisposition,” forcing him to cancel a planned Mass in Rome, just a day after he expressed his solidarity with coronavirus sufferers around the world — and as the disease continues to spread across Italy.
The illness has forced the 82-year-old pontiff to nix a penitential Mass, marking the start of Lent, that he’d planned to celebrate at the St. John Lateran basilica across town with Roman clergy, the Vatican said.
Francis will proceed with the rest of his planned work Thursday, but “preferred to stay near Santa Marta,” the Vatican hotel where he lives, officials said.
The Vatican has not specified the nature of the pope’s illness, but he was seen coughing and blowing his nose during Ash Wednesday Mass.

U.S. attorney John Durham steps up his investigation into the origins of the Trump-Russia probe; insight from former federal prosecutor Robert Ray.
Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., suggested Thursday at the Conservative Political Action Conference that U.S. Attorney John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the Russia probe will lead to criminal charges.
Collins, who has served as the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee but is leaving the role after announcing a Senate campaign, described at CPAC what he believes will come out of Durham’s probe.
WHAT IS CPAC?
“This is not going to be a Mueller report; there won’t be a report,” Collins told Fox News, noting that Durham and his team have kept very “quiet” about their work. “When he’s ready to charge people, he’ll charge people.”
He added: “And that’s when we’ll know.”
Collins’ comments came just moments after he spoke at CPAC on the topic of the Russia investigation at the FBI, and the appointment of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller, as well as his nearly two-year investigation.

Scott Morrison has confirmed one Australian diagnosed with coronavirus is in a more serious condition in Western Australia.
Speaking on 2GB this morning, the Prime Minister noted there are 15 cases of the potentially deadly virus in Australia, and a further eight from the Diamond Princess cruise.
“One of these is in a more serious condition in WA, we learnt today,” he said. “But in the rest of the community we can go about our business.”
The Prime Minister said Australia is “not immune” from the virus, but is “well-prepared”.
“This is not like SARS and MERS which happened some time ago — it’s behaving in a very different way,” the PM said. “How it transmits between people is much more prolific than what we saw. The virus itself is not as severe as SARS, it’s taking more lives. We’re not immune from it, but we are well-prepared.”
He noted the virus is more severe than the flu when it comes to its rate of mortality, but urged Australians to follow the “normal processes”.
Yesterday Mr Morrison warned Australians to prepare for a coronavirus “pandemic” as the Government implements its emergency response plan.
He told reporters there is “every indication the world will soon enter the pandemic phase of the virus”.

France is bracing for a coronavirus outbreak comparable to what Italy is facing, as the virus sweeps through Europe.
Italy has emerged as the epicentre of Europe’s virus outbreak, with the number of confirmed cases surging to 650, a 25 per cent increase in just 24 hours.
Head of Italian Civil Protection Angelo Borelli said the sudden rise in cases was because of new information from Lombardy.
Worldwide, COVID-19 has infected more than 80,000 people — the vast majority in China — and killed more than 2700.
An infectious disease specialist warned France could be the next focus in Europe.
The western European nation has 18 confirmed cases and two deaths, but Professor of Infectious and Tropical Diseases Eric Caumes warned the situation could quickly worsen.
He told CNN there were “many channels of transmission” already circulating in the French population.
“Even if the severity is probably much weaker than we imagined, it probably transmits much better than we imagined,” Prof Caumes said during a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Mr Macron warned France an “epidemic is on the way.”

Worldwide, COVID-19 has infected more than 80,000 people — the vast majority in China — and killed more than 2700.
An infectious disease specialist warned France could be the next focus in Europe.
The western European nation has 18 confirmed cases and two deaths, but Professor of Infectious and Tropical Diseases Eric Caumes warned the situation could quickly worsen.
He told CNN there were “many channels of transmission” already circulating in the French population.
“Even if the severity is probably much weaker than we imagined, it probably transmits much better than we imagined,” Prof Caumes said during a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Mr Macron warned France an “epidemic is on the way.”

WASHINGTON — Hillary Clinton raked-in more cash from convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein than any other politician despite brushing off his donations by claiming he gave money to “every” Democrat.
Federal Election Commission filings show the disgraced movie mogul bundled $1.4 million for Clinton during her presidential bid in 2016 and handed her another $73,390 dating back to her 1999 New York Senate seat run.
On Tuesday, the former first lady defended her long relationship with the sex creep, quickly deflecting scrutiny from reporters by noting that Weinstein also raised funds for Barack Obama, John Kerry and Al Gore during their presidential bids.
“He contributed to every Democrat’s campaign,” Clinton said at screening of her new film “Hillary” at the Berlin Film Festival on Tuesday, one day after Weinstein, 67, was found guilty on rape charges.

Concern is high about the dangerous coronavirus behind an epidemic in China and 33 other countries. The number of people newly diagnosed every day with illness caused by the virus is on the decline in the epicenter of Hubei Province, China, though it is still high. International health officials are increasingly worried about growing outbreaks of the virus elsewhere, including among people who neither have been to China nor in contact with anyone who has. U.S. health officials have warned that they expect more transmission of the virus in the country.
Scientists and public-health officials keep learning about the virus, called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2, or Sars-CoV-2. The disease it causes is called Covid-19.
Among key questions they are seeking answers to are how the virus is transmitted, how easily it spreads and how many people are infected but don’t develop symptoms.

Harvey Weinstein isn’t just losing his freedom — he might also lose his royal honor.
The shamed movie mogul’s conviction for rape Monday has sparked fresh calls Wednesday for him to be stripped of his CBE — a move British Prime Minister Boris Johnson supports, according to the Times of London.
Queen Elizabeth II had awarded Weinstein, 67, his honorary CBE — short for Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire — in 2004 for his outstanding contribution to the British film industry.
It is the second-highest honor the Queen can bestow, beaten only by a knighthood.
The conviction led to calls for him to be stripped of the title — now that he is no longer best known for his “services to the film industry,” as one Labour MP wrote in a formal request.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci says the U.S. has to be prepared for coronavirus cases that will eventually turn into community spread.
A team of Mount Sinai doctors became the first in the U.S. to analyze CT scans of patients diagnosed with coronavirus and said that they were able to identify specific patterns in the lungs as markers of the disease as it developed over time.
The team believes that its new insight will lead to a quicker diagnosis in patients who are suspected of COVID-19 symptoms and help determine which patients with inconclusive results should be kept in isolation.
SECOND PERSON WITH CORONAVIRUS SENT TO NEBRASKA MEDICAL CENTER
The team, which published their findings in Radiology, received the scans of 94 patients in China who had been admitted to four hospitals between Jan. 18 and Feb. 2. Most of the patients had recently traveled to Wuhan or had close contact with an infected patient.
A 65-year-old male with a history of travel to Wuhan, presenting with fever and cough. CT scan obtained 11 days from onset of symptoms (late group) shows moderate lung disease with peripheral ground glass opacities in the lungs (arrows). (The Mount Sinai Hospital)

Sanders praises Fidel Castro; reaction and analysis on 'The Five.'
This week, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., the socialist Democratic presidential front-runner, made waves when he merely reiterated his lifelong warmth toward the viciously evil Cuban communist regime. Brushing off the human rights violations of Fidel Castro -- a man whose revolution ended with the murder or imprisonment of tens of thousands of his countrymen, and decades of impoverishment and repression for millions -- Sanders explained: "We're very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba, but you know, it's unfair to simply say everything is bad. ... When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing, even though Fidel Castro did it?"
But, of course, Sanders hasn't merely praised Castro's literacy programs (which, by the way, were propagandistic exploits. Cuba had an 80 percent literacy rate before Castro's coup).
Back in the 1980s, Sanders explained that he was "physically nauseated" by former President John F. Kennedy's "hatred for the Cuban revolution." In 1989, Sanders stated after visiting Cuba: "I did not see a hungry child. I did not see any homeless people." He said that the Cuban people "had an almost religious affection" for Castro.

There is hardly a single communist regime of the past half-century for which Sanders has not expressed some level of moral support.

Sanders isn't a European social democrat, warm toward Denmark and Norway. He's a lifelong communist -- a man who declared himself fully on board with the nationalization of nearly every major American industry in the 1970s -- and an advocate for anti-Americanism abroad.
The fact that it has taken until the verge of his nomination as the 2020 Democratic presidential nominee for members of the media and fellow Democrats to take note of this rather important truth demonstrates that the left's gatekeeping function has been irrevocably broken.

The South Korean military announced additional infections among its troops, with 20 cases on its bases and some 9570 people in isolation.
The US military, which has 28,500 troops in South Korea, confirmed the first infection of an American soldier, a 23-year-old man based at Camp Carroll near Daegu.
With Brazil confirming the arrival of Latin America’s first case, the virus had a toehold on every continent but Antarctica.
The latest countries to confirm infections include North Macedonia, Pakistan, Finland, Kuwait, Lebanon, Sweden and Georgia.
The disease has now spread to at least 45 countries, with many implementing emergency plans and travel restrictions on the worst affected places.

“We should not be too eager to declare a pandemic,” Dr Tedros said on Wednesday, stressing that such a declaration could “signal that we can no longer contain the virus, which is not true”.
“We are in a fight that can be won if we do the right things.”
But Dr Tedros insisted the WHO would not hesitate to declare a pandemic if it was “an accurate description of the situation”.
“I am not downplaying the seriousness of the situation, or the potential for this to become a pandemic, because it has that potential,” he said.
“All countries, whether they have cases or not, must prepare for a potential.”

Doomsday predictions are spreading untethered online, but experts say there are many ways the virus could play out.
Xi Jinping’s image has been tarnished amid rising fears the novel coronavirus will evolve into a pandemic.
But as the virus continues to spread, with over 80,000 worldwide infections and a rising death toll, experts say the Chinese leader’s response will be to clamp down even tighter.
XI’S IMAGE ‘TARNISHED’ BY CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE
Speaking at the Lowy Institute in Sydney, senior fellow and author of Xi Jinping: The Backlash Richard McGregor said the Chinese leader’s strongman image had been shattered in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
“For Xi Jinping the narrative has been very muddled,” he said. “First he came out and issued a statement, and Wuhan was locked down. Later he came out and said he knew about this on January 7 and instructed the Politburo to do something about it. That’s at a time when we weren’t getting any official announcement at all.
“Initially his approach was what Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping would have been — drift into the background and only re-emerge at a strategic time.
“That narrative has now been thrown out. He had a conference call with 170,000 officials the other day to deliver a message.”

San Francisco declares state of emergency over coronavirus

San Francisco Mayor London Breed (D) declared a state of emergency for the city on Tuesday amid concerns over the international coronavirus outbreak.
While no coronavirus cases have been confirmed in San Francisco, “the global picture is changing rapidly, and we need to step-up preparedness,” Breed said in a statement.
“We see the virus spreading in new parts of the world every day, and we are taking the necessary steps to protect San Franciscans from harm,” she added.
The new state of emergency will allow city officials to assemble resources and personnel to expedite emergency planning measures and boost the ability to deploy a rapid response to a potential coronavirus case in the city.
The move follows a similar declaration from Santa Clara County earlier this month. The declaration is effective immediately for seven days and will be voted on by the board of supervisors on March 3.

Tensions ran high during a Tuesday afternoon Senate subcommittee hearing in which acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf was put to task by Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana on government preparation for a possible Coronavirus epidemic.
During a hearing meant for discussion of the 2021 DHS budget, Kennedy, at times fuming with anger, demanded that Wolf provide more concrete answers about the deadly and mysterious virus, which has swept through southeast Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Europe, threatening to make a significant impact in the US.
The Center for Disease Control characterized the threat of Coronavirus on Tuesday as having “raised our level of concern,” and told Americans to “prepare for disruption.” Nearly 3,000 people have died from the disease with more than 80,000 cases reported globally.
