Prosecutors Sought Chinese Bank Records in North Korea Probe
Ruling under the Patriot Act could cut off banks’ access to U.S. correspondent accounts if they don’t comply

WASHINGTON—A U.S. federal judge ordered three Chinese banks to provide documents sought by a grand jury and federal prosecutors investigating a Hong Kong-based front company for North Korea’s nuclear program, according to an opinion unsealed late Tuesday.
The ruling is the second known instance of prosecutors relying on a rarely used tool in the Patriot Act, marking a major escalation in the U.S. government’s efforts to block North Korea’s ability to circumvent sanctions and access the international financial system.

Venezuelan opposition leaders call for a military uprising against the government of President Nicolas Maduro; Rep. Adam Kinzinger warns of 'hell to pay' if the military cracks down on the Venezuelan people.
As Venezuela plunged into a dramatic televised scene of chaos and violence on Tuesday, President Trump warned he would impose a "full and complete embargo" and sanctions on Cuba if its troops do not cease operations in the ravaged South American nation.
National Security Adviser John Bolton alleged earlier Tuesday that Cuban troops were keeping Maduro in power in Caracas.
“It’s a very delicate moment,” Bolton said, adding that "all options" remained on the table -- including, potentially, a U.S. military intervention. “The president wants to see a peaceful transfer of power."
Trump's dramatic threat came hours after his administration resoundingly endorsed an ongoing Venezuelan opposition effort, headed by Juan Guaido and Leopoldo Lopez, to spark a military uprising against embattled President Nicolas Maduro. The Trump administration also has worked to roll back Obama-era easing of Cold War sanctions on Cuba.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters Tuesday that Maduro had been on his way out of the country bound for Cuba, but that Russia told him to remain. Bolton, meanwhile, warned Russia against interfering.
The U.S. government said about 20,000 Cuban troops and agents have been working in Venezuela to prop up Maduro's government, a figure disputed by Cuba.

The Democrat Party is so unrecognizable today because it’s gone. The name is still there. Some of the old faces are there. But the party of John Kennedy, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Barbara Jordan and Zell Miller is dead.
Today’s Democrat Party is hollowed out by a chronic addiction to hyper-partisan controversies that mimic the feeling of being alive. Controversy gives Dems a constant drip of political dopamine they could never find in solving real problems. And they’re hooked now.
So, we’re witnessing a case of shared psychotic disorder that’s driving the party to self-medicate. Drug of choice? Donald Trump. Democrats are so impaired by their craving to “get Trump” that they imbibe day-in and day-out despite the deadly consequences to their party and to the country.
But while they trip out on Trump – seeing and hearing things that aren’t there – a mess of political misfits are filling the party void. The new soul of the party is made up of a hodgepodge of misfits who team with rabid, left-leaning media and dark operators to push a pre-capitalist, post Judeo-Christian, anti-American revolution under a Democrat veneer.
Democrats are becoming America’s first “Manchurian” party.

Secretary Mike Pompeo urges Nicolas Maduro to leave Venezuela
Russia diverted President Nicolas Maduro from departing Venezuela, says Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
The U.S. has learned Venezuela's disputed President Nicolas Maduro was "ready" to leave the country amid protest violence and calls for his ouster -- until Russia convinced him to stay, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News on Tuesday night.
“He was ready to go,” Pompeo said on “Special Report.” “He was diverted by the Russians.”
He noted he wanted Maduro, whom he called a “thug,” to get back on that plane.
The U.S. and about 50 other nations have taken the position that Maduro’s re-election last year was marred by fraud and that he is not the legitimate president of Venezuela, a once prosperous nation that has the world’s largest proven oil reserves.
The U.S. government said about 20,000 Cuban troops and agents have been working in Venezuela to prop up Maduro's government, a figure disputed by Cuba.
Pompeo said the Cubans and Russians have been in direct opposition of Venezuela’s duly elected leader, Juan Guaido.

Venezuelan opposition leaders call for a military uprising against the government of President Nicolas Maduro; Rep. Adam Kinzinger warns of 'hell to pay' if the military cracks down on the Venezuelan people.
Emboldened supporters of opposition leader Juan Guaido brutally clashed with Venezuelan security forces as dramatic footage from Caracas showed a military armored vehicle plowing into the crowd.
In a video broadcast live on telecasts across the world, the armored vehicle can be seen driving over the center of a road, hitting a crowd of demonstrators purportedly throwing rocks at security forces. No injuries were immediately reported.
Sen. Marco Rubio, R-FL., denounced the actions by Venezuelan security forces, saying that “military and security leaders must realize they are and will be held responsible for this,” he said on Twitter.

The United States, which has supported Guaido’s claim as interim president of Venezuela, offered its support of the opposition and its supporters.
“To Juan Guaido, the National Assembly and all the freedom-loving people of Venezuela who are taking to the streets today in #operacionlibertad—Estamos con ustedes! We are with you! America will stand with you until freedom & democracy are restored. Vayan con dios!” Vice President Mike Pence wrote on Twitter.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said that President Trump had been briefed on the ongoing situation in Venezuela and they were monitoring.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the U.S. fully supports the “Venezuelan people in their quest for freedom and democracy.”
“Democracy cannot be defeated,” he added.

National Security Advisor John Bolton said that the Venezuelan military has a choice to make: embrace democracy or "face more man-made suffering and isolation."
"Venezuelans have made clear that the current path toward democracy is irreversible," he said on Twitter.

New York Times condemned for anti-Semitic Netanyahu, Trump cartoon

The condemnation for the New York Times continued on Sunday after the newspaper’s international print editions ran an anti-Semitic cartoon depicting Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a guide dog leading a blind President Trump in a skullcap.
“We stand with Israel and we condemn antisemitism in ALL its forms, including @nytimes political cartoons,” Vice President Pence tweeted on Sunday.
White House counselor Kellyanne Conway called the cartoon, which ran last Thursday, “odious and offensive” and ridiculed the Times for its mea culpa.
“Apologies usually include words like regret, sorry and apologize. They didn’t do that,” she said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
The newspaper released an second apology on Sunday that would be included in the Times print editions on Monday.

US warships sailed through Taiwan Strait, defense ministry says

Taiwan's defense ministry on Monday said two U.S. warships sailed through the Taiwan Strait over the weekend, a move likely to heighten tension with Beijing.
The ships sailed from the south to the north through the waterway that divides Taiwan from mainland China, the ministry said.
Beijing frequently objects to the movement of foreign military vessels through the contest area on its claim to Taiwan as its own territory to be annexed by force if necessary.
Last week, Beijing complained to France after a French warship entered Chinese territorial waters while traversing the Taiwan Strait, and blamed British naval activity in the South China Sea for a downturn in bilateral relations.

No doubt you’ve heard a Democrat or two declare that President Trump is a “threat to our democracy.” Joe Biden used his campaign launch to up the ante, saying that the 2020 election is a “battle for the soul” of America and warning that if Trump gets a second term, “he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation.”
Ho hum. The suggestion that the president is the personification of evil and is destroying all that makes America exceptional has become so routine that it’s easy to ignore it. In fact, it’s an extraordinary charge, even for our nasty, turbulent times.
More remarkable, the charge and related talking points continue to thrive on the left despite the lack of facts to support them. Indeed, special counsel Robert Mueller shredded the heart of the wildest accusations — that Trump conspired with Russia to steal the 2016 election.
So the collusion charge was a Big Lie, but it’s a lie that won’t die. A trip down memory lane shows how we got to this perilous place.

On Saturday, The New York Times issued a retraction, admitting their international edition published an anti-Semitic cartoon that promoted harmful tropes which are "offensive" towards Jewish people and it was "an error of judgment publishing it."
The cartoon, seen below, depicts Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a dog with the Star of David leading a scowling Donald Trump with what appears to be a yarmulke (the NYT said it was a 'skullcap') and dark sunglasses.

Terrorists may be plotting Sri Lanka-style attacks at tourist destinations: report

Islamic terrorists are feared to be plotting Sri Lanka-style massacres at other popular tourist destinations, intelligence officials have warned.
Jihadi fighters fleeing Iraq and Syria after the fall of ISIS are now able to concentrate on plotting devastating attacks with radicals overseas, according to the UK’s Sunday Telegraph.
Intelligence sources told the paper that the devastation in Sri Lanka — where at least 250 were killed — will strengthen the resolve to further target popular hotspots packed with tourists.

In March 2018, Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned with an insidious, Soviet-developed nerve agent called A-234.
Skripal was a former Russian intelligence officer who had been living in the United Kingdom since 2010. He had previously worked as a double agent for the country's intelligence service from 1995 until he was arrested in Moscow in 2004.
Skripal and his daughter survived the attack – although just barely.

2020 Democrats’ insane race to the left

Keeping President Trump in the White House after 2020 would “fundamentally alter the character of this nation,” ex-Veep Joe Biden insisted as he joined the race last week. Uh, Joe: Have you heard what your fellow Democrats are proposing?
Since its founding, America has grown strong and prosperous as a democratic republic with a robust capitalist spirit. Yet Dems, including most of those seeking to take Trump’s job, want to end all that, with serious constitutional changes and various extremist socialist ideas. Consider the radical (often wacky) proposals that dominate Democrats’ 2020 debate so far:
The Green New Deal: Concocted by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey, this plan seeks a complete re-do of the economy based on zero-emission energy (banning cars, planes, even cows) in just 10 years. Plus, guaranteed jobs, income and benefits for all. Many of the 2020 hopefuls have endorsed it — though none of those who serve in the Senate dared to vote for it.
Medicare for All: This would abolish all private insurance, including the plans that now cover 180 million Americans, and put Washington in charge of everyone’s health care. Price tag? A “mere” $32 trillion over 10 years.
Remove all the walls and fences at US borders: It’s a welcome mat to all comers, perhaps even terrorists, since there’d be no way to check who’s coming in. Talk about changing the “character of the nation.”
Abolish the Electoral College: Dems want to have big blue states like California and New York basically choose America’s presidents, shutting out smaller states and overturning a fundamental deal that united the country at its founding — and for the 243 years that followed. (Scrapping the Senate, whose members similarly represent different numbers of citizens, could be next.)
Free college and mass student-loan debt forgiveness: Tuition costs alone would run $70 billion a year, but that’s a bargain compared to Sen. Liz Warren’s debt-forgiveness plan, which runs a cool $640 billion. As for those who opted not to attend college to avoid debt, too bad: Your tax dollars would still go to repay the loans of those who went.
Letting imprisoned convicts vote: Whether they’re a murderer, a rapist or a terrorist. (Any guesses about where they’d stand on law-and-order issues?)

Yes, President Trump committed obstruction. From the moment he defeated Hillary Clinton, Democrats have tried to overturn the 2016 election, but Trump has obstructed their efforts every step of the way.
This was obstruction in the interests of justice. The president should be applauded for it.
First, partisans within the Justice Department spied on the Trump presidential campaign. They used a mainstream news article to obtain a warrant to surveil Trump’s campaign staff by misleading a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court judge about the source of the article.

Special counsel Robert Mueller was derelict in his duty to fully investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, argues Fox News contributor Kimberley Strassel, member of the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board.
Suggesting that Special Counsel Robert Mueller tried covering for the FBI, Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberley Strassel told Fox News host Bill Hemmer on Friday Mueller engaged in a "total dereliction of duty" by not further investigating the infamous Steele dossier.
"I think that what he did is a total dereliction of duty — that your job is to look into Russian interference in our elections and here is this central document which caused so much political mayhem for two years," she said on "America's Newsroom."
After noting concern over the dossier's potential ties to the Kremlin, she criticized Mueller for publishing his report without delving deeper into the Russia investigation's origins. "I'm not sure how you go there, except for with the intent purpose of shielding the FBI," she said.
Strassel speculated that Mueller didn't delve deeper into the dossier because he spent so many years leading the FBI. "Much of this document does read as a defense of the FBI," she said of the Mueller report.

Trump-Russia special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed May 17, 2017. Twenty-two months later, on March 22, 2019, Mueller sent his report to the Justice Department.
Some special counsel investigations have taken longer; it is the nature of such probes to drag on and on. But why did Mueller need nearly two years to determine whether the Trump campaign and Russia conspired or coordinated to fix the 2016 election?
He didn't, it appears. In the wake of the release of Mueller's report, there are indications that special counsel prosecutors mostly knew by the end of 2017, and certainly by a few months later, that the evidence would not establish that conspiracy or coordination — or collusion, to use the popular term — had taken place. Mueller clearly spent a lot of time on the other half of his report — trying to establish that Trump obstructed justice — but on the most explosive and consequential allegation of the Trump-Russia affair, the conspiracy allegation, the Mueller investigation was essentially over long before it officially ended.

Now, it is clear Mueller first looked for collusion in all the obvious places. Failing to establish that it took place, he looked farther to the fringes of the Trump-Russia affair. He failed to establish that it took place there, either. As time passed and the two-year mark for his investigation approached, he finally gave up.

Chinese family paid $6.5M to admissions scam mastermind

A Chinese family allegedly paid a whopping $6.5 million to crooked college prep adviser William “Rick” Singer in the nationwide admissions scandal — but still haven’t been charged in the case, according to a new report.
Prosecutors mentioned the eye-popping figure last month when announcing they’d busted dozens of rich American parents for allegedly paying Singer to bribe their kids’ way into top colleges — but none of those families were accused of paying anywhere near that much.
The Wall Street Journal on Friday revealed that the deep-pocketed family in question is from China, and have not been charged.
The family wasn’t identified in the report, but the paper does reveal the name of an ousted Yale student in another family, which allegedly paid Singer $1.2 million to secure her admission to the Ivy as a bogus soccer recruit.
The student — who has been identified in court documents as “Yale Applicant 1″ — is 21-year-old Sherry Guo, whose family is also from China and also have not yet faced any charges.
Guo moved from China to the US as a teen to attend high school in California, and hoped to attend Columbia University or Oxford University, her attorney, James Spertus, told the Journal.
But Singer told her would be going to Yale instead — which she didn’t find weird because she was “so unfamiliar with how people apply to schools in the U.S.,” Spertus claimed.
“Rick Singer’s instructions to her didn’t seem as out of place as they would to a student who grew up in the United States and has more of an expectation of free choice,” he told the paper.

Politicians keep reminding us not to lose sight of special counsel Robert Mueller’s broader assignment: to investigate Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. If only someone had reminded Mueller.
One of the biggest failures of the Mueller probe concerns not what was in the final report, but what was not. Close readers will search in vain for any analysis of the central document in this affair: the infamous “dossier.” It’s a stunning omission, given the possibility that the Russians used that collection of reports to feed disinformation to U.S. intelligence agencies, sparking years of political maelstrom.
KIMBERLEY STRASSEL: MUELLER’S REPORT SPEAKS VOLUMES
The dossier -- compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele on behalf of Fusion GPS, an opposition-research firm working for the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee -- fed to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the media the principal allegations of the “collusion” narrative. It claimed Paul Manafort was at the center of a “well-developed” Trump-Russia “conspiracy”; that Carter Page served as his intermediary, conducting secret meetings with a Kremlin official and the head of a state energy company; that Michael Cohen held a clandestine meeting in Prague with Vladimir Putin cronies; and that the Russians had compromising material on Donald Trump, making him vulnerable to blackmail. The dossier was clearly important to the FBI probe. Its wild claims made up a significant section of the FBI’s application for a secret surveillance warrant on Page.
