US Tariffs Threaten China’s Globalist Goals

For the last quarter century or more, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been building the case for, and laying the framework of, a Beijing-led new world order.

The CCP’s ultimate goal is to replace the existing U.S.-led liberal international order, which operates within the geopolitical and economic framework of multilateral organizations, such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and other agencies that have evolved since World War II.

The problem for the communists is that the existing global order promotes liberal values and freedoms, including speech, press, association, and political expression, which directly undermine the CCP’s ongoing efforts to pacify and control the Chinese people and oppressed minority groups. As a result, the Party has developed a strategy that employs the language of the values of the current order while incrementally implementing a multipolar framework that enhances Beijing’s prestige, influence, and leadership, which could be labeled as “globalism with Chinese characteristics.”

While repeating Beijing’s platitudes of “win-win cooperation,” “peaceful cooperation,” and “democracy with Chinese characteristics,” the CCP aims to weaken Western values and the concept of universal human rights while substituting the sovereignty of individual states and non-interference in their domestic affairs as primary emphases. Translation: Beijing rejects the values that shape modern civilized nations, as well as all foreign criticism of the Chinese regime’s human rights violations.

State-run Chinese media routinely propagate supporting messages promoting a CCP-led new world order. Consider this headline from Global Times on April 7: “China is willing to work together with countries, including Canada, to safeguard multilateralism and multilateral trading system.”

In Another Win for Trump, Senate Resolution on Tariffs Fails

Rebecca Downs | April 30, 2025 8:30 PM

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump announced his list of reciprocal tariffs on a day heralded as "Liberation Day." That didn't sit well with some, though, as the Senate put forth a resolution on Wednesday night to scrap tariffs. The plan failed, though, thanks to attendance issues from senators who previously supported such plans to do with tariffs.

The ultimate vote was 49-49, and given McConnell's support for a similar bill to do with tariffs on Canada, as well as how every other present Democrat voted for the resolution, these absences are almost certainly to blame. There were Republicans, who besides McConnell, also have voted against tariffs and voted in favor of the resolution on Wednesday, including Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Rand Paul of Kentucky.

As
The Hill reported when it comes to those absences, and the implications of such a resolution:

McConnell and Whitehouse had both missed the two votes earlier in the day. One Senate GOP member told The Hill that McConnell was sick and unable to vote.

“The Senator has been consistent in opposing tariffs and that a trade war is not in the best interest of American households and businesses. He believes that tariffs are a tax increase on everybody,” David Popp, a McConnell spokesperson, said in a statement

Whitehouse was reportedly
traveling from South Korea.

The vote was held open longer than normal amid questions about next steps. The chamber immediately proceeded to a vote that would block off the resolution from coming to the floor once again.

...

Senate Republican leaders had dismissed the importance of Wednesday’s vote.

“I think the broad majorities of Republicans are giving the administration … some space to figure out if they can get some good deals. We’re awaiting the results of that,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) told reporters before the vote. “I wouldn’t attach too much weight to it.”

Not long after the initial vote took place, the Senate voted to block another vote on such a resolution, as The Hill mentioned would happen. The vote was once more 49-49, with Vice President JD Vance casting a tiebreaking vote to prevent the vote from coming up again.

Trump Reveals If He’s Lost Any Confidence in Pete Hegseth

Townhall previously covered how the Pentagon’s acting inspector general announced that his agency would investigate Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. This investigation centered around the fact that he allegedly took part in a group chat on the app called Signal to discuss plans to bomb Houthi rebels in Yemen. This is the high-profile group chat where a journalist from The Atlantic was supposedly added by mistake.

The Acting Inspector General Steven A. Stebbins sent a
letter to Hegseth informing him of the probe.

“The objective of this evaluation is to determine the extent to which the Secretary of Defense and other DoD personnel complied with DoD policies and procedures for the use of a commercial messaging application for official business,” the letter read. “Additionally, we will review compliance with classification and records retention requirements.”

This week, President Donald Trump was questioned if he has lost any confidence in Hegseth after this.

"He's a very good defense secretary," the president told ABC News’ Terry Moran.

“I don’t have 100 percent confidence in anything, okay? Anything. Do I have a hundred percent? It’s a stupid question,” Trump added, shutting down the question. “Only a liar would say I have a 100 percent confidence.”

“I don't have a 100% confidence that we're gonna finish this interview,” Trump stated.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he won’t reveal discussions about facilitating the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

“Well, I’ll never tell you that. And you know who else I’ll never tell? A judge,” Mr.
Rubio said during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting. “Because the conduct of all foreign policy belongs to the president of the United States and the executive branch, not some judge.

“So we will conduct foreign policy appropriately if we need to. But I’ll never discuss it and no one will ever make us discuss it because that’s how foreign policy works.”

President Trump said in an interview that aired Tuesday night that he “could” get Mr. Abrego Garcia, the illegal immigrant living in Maryland and deported to El Salvador, back, but he won’t because he’s not the “gentleman” that people think he is.

When asked Wednesday if he thought El Salvador President Nayib Bukele would send the man back, Mr. Trump said he didn’t know but touted the good relationship the U.S. has with El Salvador.

U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis in Maryland Wednesday reiterated her call for the Trump administration to provide information on efforts to bring Mr. Abrego Garcia back.

Mr.
Rubio said the administration has spoken to other countries, telling them that if they want a “good relationship” with the U.S., “you need to take back your people that are here illegally.”

“We’ve had historic cooperation beyond that, and I say this unapologetically — we are actively searching for other countries to take people from third countries,” he said.

NEWS AND ANALYSIS:

U.S. national laboratories and several American universities that are engaged in Pentagon-funded research are using Chinese supercomputers in ways that endanger U.S. national security, according to a former Air Force intelligence analyst.

L.J. Eads, now a specialist on
China security matters, uncovered the links in research from over 100 scientific studies between 2016 and 2024. The studies revealed that American researchers were using China’s TianHe-series supercomputers located in Tianjin and Guangzhou.

The systems are part of the Chinese national supercomputer center and were used in papers produced by researchers at Argonne, Oak Ridge and Los Alamos National Laboratories. The laboratories are involved in sensitive defense work, including nuclear weapons.

The supercomputer centers are linked to the People’s Liberation Army and other official Chinese ministries and institutes that are on the Commerce Department’s blacklist of foreign companies.

The systems “serve as critical infrastructure for the PLA and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in advancing military technology, hypersonic weapons and AI-driven defense capabilities,” Mr. Eads said.

The Guangzhou supercomputer, in particular, is a major military system that has been used to build hypersonic missiles, aerospace systems, satellite surveillance, cryptographic analysis and nuclear weapons.

The supercomputer in Tianjin has worked on PLA hypersonic propulsion systems, strategic war gaming and cyber warfare operations.

Other Chinese research using supercomputers has facilitated biomedical research and genetic analysis that could be used for weapons, and air and space research.

President Donald Trump celebrated day 100 of his administration Tuesday, and he’s already dealt several blows to the deep state — from declassifying assassination files to revoking security clearances.

Since assuming her role as head of the intelligence community (IC), Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard has attempted to root out politicization. She announced the Director’s Initiatives Group (DIG), a task force aimed at promoting
transparency, in early April.

Gabbard also declassified the Biden administration’s “Strategic Implementation Plan For Countering Domestic Terrorism.” The strategy targeted gun rights, hate crimes and “misinformation.”

Trump is delivering on his promise to address longstanding issues in the auto industry with his tariff strategy, a United Auto Workers member said.

WARREN, Mich.—In a political rally commemorating his first 100 days in office since reclaiming the White House, President Donald Trump touted his achievements in office so far.

Many attendees of the rally, held at Macomb Community College in Warren, were automotive workers, among the most likely to benefit from the tariff relief Trump
announced earlier the same day. While tariffs on imported automobiles will remain in effect—intended to boost U.S. manufacturers—Trump is pulling back tariffs on raw materials like steel and aluminum.

“We’re here tonight in the heartland of our nation to celebrate the most successful first 100 days of any administration in the history of our country,” Trump said.

In a symbolic move, Trump chose to celebrate the crucial day in the Great Lakes State, the heart of the U.S. automotive industry, which his recent tariff policy has heavily impacted. Earlier this month, Trump imposed 25 percent tariffs on imported vehicles to bolster domestic car manufacturing.

Macomb County, Michigan’s third largest county, was a major contributor to Trump’s victory in Michigan. Trump won Michigan by 1.4 percent, flipping a key swing state that President Joe Biden had carried by 2.8 percent in 2020.

In his speech, Trump is expected to spotlight two key campaign promises: strengthening border security and reducing gas prices. He’s also likely to defend his tariff policy as central to his economic agenda.

How DOGE Sent Shockwaves Through DC: Trump’s First 100 Days

The Department of Government Efficiency reports $160 billion in savings amid legal challenges and other opposition.

The second Trump administration has broken new ground in many areas. One big area is its Department of Government Efficiency, better known as DOGE.

Although DOGE cannot make cuts directly, it has led an effort across agencies to trim spending. Its stated focus has been to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse, as well as to modernize government technology.

Republicans have celebrated the time-limited initiative, which sunsets on July 4, 2026. So have some observers in Washington.

Democrats in Congress have questioned the scope of DOGE-inspired cuts and the organization’s access to sensitive data. DOGE has faced obstacles from the judiciary, too.

DOGE’s website reports to have identified $160 billion in savings so far. Here are key things to know about DOGE after its first 100 days.

DOGE’s Origins, Structure

Tesla CEO Musk was a top financial supporter of President Donald Trump’s 2024 candidacy. In August 2024, he suggested to Trump that he could lead a government efficiency commission. Trump pitched the idea publicly in early September, months before Election Day.

Trump formally
announced the plan a week after the Nov. 4 election, tapping Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to co-lead the effort. On Jan. 20, a DOGE spokesperson confirmed Ramaswamy would not be involved.

Democrats’ weird fixation on sex is making our children sick

Mental, physical and moral contagions all have a cause

Democrats’ fixation on sex corrupting children illustration by Linas Garsys / The Washington Times more >

COMMENTARY

By Everett Piper - Sunday, April 27, 2025

OPINION:

The Supreme Court heard last week from attorneys representing the state of Maryland arguing in favor of teaching prekindergarten children as young as 3 the virtues of, in the words of Justice Neil M. Gorsuch, “leather, bondage, sex work and drag queens.” If this story doesn’t highlight the fact that Democrats have completely lost their minds and sold their souls to their weird sexual fetishes, what does?

For decades, Democrats have been cheerleaders for nearly every aberrant copulative act imaginable, and the negative consequences of their sexual peccadillos are almost too numerous to count.

In addition to the social confusion of more than 20% of today’s youths now identifying somewhere along the LGBTQ spectrum, the physical consequences of indoctrinating our children to rut like rabbits are sobering.

Here are just a few examples:

• Today, more than 20% of America’s female population younger than 25 has a sexually transmitted disease.

• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the number of cases of gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis in the United States has reached an unprecedented high, and young women ages 15 to 24 account for a large number of these cases.

• More than 1.5 million new cases of chlamydia, about 395,000 new cases of gonorrhea and nearly 24,000 cases of syphilis are reported in the United States every year.

• Americans ages 15 to 24 account for more than 50% of gonorrhea cases and 65% of chlamydia cases.

Abortion pills 22 times more dangerous than billed on warning label, study finds

By Valerie Richardson - The Washington Times - Monday, April 28, 2025

A largest-of-its-kind study found that more than 10% of women who terminate their pregnancies with abortion pills experience serious health problems, even though the drug’s warning label puts the figure at less than 0.5%.

The analysis of insurance data from 865,727 prescriptions of mifepristone from 2017 to 2023 showed that within 45 days, 10.93% of women were treated for conditions including sepsis, hemorrhaging and infection, while 2.84% ended up undergoing a surgical abortion.

“The real-world rate of serious adverse events following mifepristone abortions is at least 22 times as high as the summary figure of ‘less than 0.5 percent’ in clinical trials reported on the drug label,” said the Ethics and Public Policy Center, a conservative think tank, which
released the research Monday.

The study conducted by EPPC President Ryan T. Anderson and Jamie Bryan Hall, the center’s director of data analysis, recommended that the Food and Drug Administration reinstate the safety protocols weakened under the Biden and Obama administrations to expand abortion access.

“In light of this research, we urge the FDA to reinstate earlier, stronger patient safety protocols and reconsider its approval of mifepristone altogether,” the study’s authors wrote. “Women deserve better than the abortion pill.”

The warning label for Mifeprex, the brand name for mifepristone manufactured by Danco Laboratories, says that the 0.5% figure for serious adverse reactions is based on six U.S. and four non-U.S. clinical studies totaling 30,966 women — far fewer than the number in the EPPC analysis.

The FDA-approved label is also based on data “from trials taking place more than a decade ago,” the EPPC analysis says.

“Danco Laboratories markets Mifeprex as ‘the safe and effective abortion pill,’ but our research shows that mifepristone abortion, as currently practiced in the U.S., is not safe and effective,” said the study.

US_ Trump: Tariff 'Bonanza' Will End Income Tax for Many

(Manuel Balce Ceneta/AP") President Donald Trump says his tariff plans are aimed at eliminating income tax for many Americans. [Full Story]

Trump: Tariff 'Bonanza' Will End Income Tax for Many

By Charlie McCarthy | Monday, 28 April 2025 02:08 PM EDT

President Donald Trump suggested his tariffs could lead to the end of income tax for many Americans.

While Democrats, critics, and mainstream media outlets insist Trump's tariffs will lead to a recession, he remains adamant that his plan ultimately will pay off for U.S. citizens.

"When Tariffs cut in, many people's Income Taxes will be substantially reduced, maybe even completely eliminated. Focus will be on people making less than $200,000 a year," Trump
posted Sunday on Truth Social.

"Also, massive numbers of jobs are already being created, with new plants and factories currently being built or planned. It will be a BONANZA FOR AMERICA!!! THE EXTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE IS HAPPENING!!!"

In an interview with Time magazine released Friday, Trump
said he made "200 deals" on tariffs and that the arrangements will be "finished" in the next three to four weeks.

On Monday,
Punchbowl News' Andrew Desiderio reported the White House reportedly sent a statement of administration policy to Senate offices saying Trump "is now in active negotiations with many of these countries" affected by the tariffs.

Epoch Times Honored for Work Exposing Chinese Regime’s Human Rights Abuses

Reports on how the Chinese Communist Party takes organs from people imprisoned for spiritual beliefs win annual award for secular media coverage of religion.

An Epoch Times reporter will be honored in April for her work in exposing communist China’s practice of harvesting organs from people imprisoned for their spiritual beliefs.

Eva Fu, who splits her time between New York City and Washington, was selected by the Religion Communicators Council (RCC) to receive a 2025 Wilbur Award. The award, given annually since 1949, is the top honor given by the organization. It is meant to recognize the “most outstanding work in the communication of religious issues, values, and themes in secular media,” according to a March 14 press release.

Judges reviewed submissions from news organizations around the world, including a collection of Fu’s articles submitted under the title “Killing the Faithful for Organs: The Brutal Secret Beijing Doesn’t Want Exposed.”

“Many people in desperate need of organ transplants now visit China for surgery because waiting times are unusually short,” Fu wrote in a requested letter explaining why she pursues the topic so aggressively in her reporting.

“How many know their ready-to-transplant organs might be stolen from people imprisoned because of their spiritual beliefs? Surely, very few.”

Forced organ harvesting has long been a closely guarded secret of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The Epoch Times has found that few around the world—with the exception of those involved—seem to understand that the regime’s supply of healthy organs for transplants often comes from imprisoned members of the spiritual discipline Falun Gong.

Victims of the car attack during a street festival in Vancouver on April 26 range from five to 65, police say.

At least 11 people have been killed and many injured after a man drove a car into the crowd.

Police have charged Vancouver resident Adam Kai-Ji Lo, 30, with eight counts of second-degree murder. Police say the suspect is in custody and that “further charges are anticipated.” The suspect has had “extensive history” of interaction with law enforcement, police said, citing mental health issues.

The attack happened at 8:14 p.m. local time on April 26 at the intersection of Fraser Street and East 41st Avenue, where the Filipino community was holding its Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, Vancouver Police
stated.

Greenland, Denmark Agree to Strengthen Alliance as Trump Offers to Buy Territory

‘We are in a foreign policy situation, which means we have to move closer together,’ Greenland’s new prime minister said on April 27.

Greenland and Denmark said on April 27 that they will move to solidify their alliance as President Donald Trump continues to express interest in buying the Arctic island.

The display of unity followed discussions in Copenhagen between Greenland’s new prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Nielsen arrived in the Danish capital on April 26 for what is slated to be a three-day visit.

“We are in a foreign policy situation, which means we have to move closer together,” Nielsen said at a joint press conference with Frederiksen.

Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory in the Arctic Ocean to the northeast of Canada, offers strategic, political, and economic advantages, particularly as the United States looks toward the Northwest Passage for shipping routes amid delays at the Panama Canal.

The island is also rich in natural resources, with China, Russia, and the United States all showing a
keen interest in taking control of the region.

Trump has
expressed concerns over a growing Chinese and Russian naval presence in the region, suggesting that U.S. control of Greenland would ensure national and global security.

Reviewing Trump’s first 100 days

Getting America to 'think big' again

Trump cleaning up the federal government illustration by Alexander Hunter/The Washington Times more >

COMMENTARY

By David N. Bossie - Sunday, April 27, 2025

OPINION:

President Trump’s 100th day in office is fast approaching, so it’s a perfect time to review his job performance during the opening months of his historic second term in the White House.

To say the least, it’s refreshing to have a president who is focused on what’s truly important — putting America first — and has the fortitude to say enough is enough. After four years of darkness, pessimism and incompetence, we now have a president dedicated to making America a strong nation again.

For the past 100 days, our 45th and 47th president has been laser focused on the major structural reforms that will save our country for future generations. As a starting point, Mr. Trump has returned to basics by identifying the pillars of a vibrant country. For decades, too many career politicians on both sides of the aisle have lost sight of this critical formula, along with the commonsense notion that some problems cannot be ignored. The improvement in “right track/wrong track” polling data shows that folks are hungry for this monumental change in direction and leadership.

The decline in American leadership on the world stage during the Biden-Harris administration was unacceptable to Mr. Trump. A healthy country must have a respected leader who strongly advocates for its founding ideals and priorities. Mr. Trump is a natural leader who inspires his fellow Americans daily to love their country and what it stands for and to strive for greatness in their lives. During his first 100 days, this president has demonstrated that he fully understands the importance of projecting strength and radiating global success. With him back in the Oval Office, it’s abundantly clear that the United States has its mojo back.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday that Russia and Ukraine are edging “closer” to a peace deal but “it’s still not there.”

Speaking on
NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Mr. Rubio said President Trump has employed an all-hands-on-deck strategy to try to fulfill his campaign promise to end the war that started in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine.

“He’s trying to bring this war to an end, and we’ve made real progress. But those last couple steps of this journey were always going to be the hardest ones, and it needs to happen soon,” Mr. Rubio said. “We cannot continue, as I said, to dedicate time and resources to this effort if it’s not going to come to fruition.”

“So, the last week has really been about figuring out how close are these sides really and are they close enough that this merits a continued investment of our time as a mediator in this regard,” the top U.S. diplomat said.

Mr. Rubio said the talks this week will be “very critical.”

“This week is going to be a really important week in which we have to make a determination about whether this is an endeavor that we want to continue to be involved in, or if it’s time to sort of focus on some other issues that are equally, if not more, important in some case,” he said.

Mr.
Trump has sent mixed messages regarding the current state of negotiations.

On Saturday, Mr.
Trump suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin could be stringing him along after another round of missile strikes in Kyiv.

Trump’s Tax Cuts Worked — Now Make Them Permanent

When we passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act back in 2017, it was a game-changer. As a former small business owner and member of Congress, I saw firsthand how our outdated and overcomplicated tax code was holding Americans back. So we rolled up our sleeves, simplified the code, lowered rates and cut through red tape.

And do you know what? It worked.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act helped spark a resurgence of prosperity, job creation and business confidence across the country. In my home state of Georgia, families kept more of their hard-earned money. Small businesses started hiring and growing again. Wages went up, job openings surged and for the first time in years, the American Dream felt within reach for a lot of folks.

But today, things feel different.

There’s a growing sense of unease across the country. People are feeling the pinch of inflation, the uncertainty of trade disputes and the lingering effects of supply chain disruptions. In rural communities and suburban neighborhoods alike, Americans are wondering what comes next and whether they’ll be able to afford the everyday goods needed in their households.

That uncertainty is real. And it will only grow worse if Congress doesn’t act to make the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanent.

Key provisions of the law are set to expire this year, including lower tax rates for families and critical tax deductions for small businesses. Letting those provisions lapse would amount to a self-inflicted wound, pulling the rug out from under middle-class families and job creators just as they’re seeking to regain their footing.

During my time in Congress, I heard directly from small business owners in places like LaGrange, Columbus and Newnan, Georgia. They told me that President Trump’s tax cuts gave them breathing room and more importantly, fuel for growth. They hired new workers, raised wages and invested in their communities. Families benefited too thanks to a bigger standard deduction and an expanded child tax credit. That’s not abstract policy — that’s real money in people’s pockets.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) took Meta to trial last week, opening a federal antitrust assault that threatens to tear Mark Zuckerberg’s trillion-dollar empire apart.

The trial caps nearly five years of legal wrangling over regulators’
claim that Meta crushed competition — and illegally established social media hegemony — by acquiring Instagram and WhatsApp over a decade ago. At stake is more than Meta’s ownership of the billion-user properties, but whether regulators can set a blueprint for challenging Silicon Valley’s biggest players — or expose the limits of Washington’s ability to rein them in. (RELATED: One Court Case Could Totally Upend Google’s Search Engine Empire)

“[The recent swell of tech antitrust cases] represents, really, the first chink in the armor in years against these Big Tech monopolists,” Daniel Cochrane, a tech policy researcher at the Heritage Foundation, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “And with respect specifically to the Meta case, it could have really, really major implications for how the digital ecosystem is ordered going forward. If Meta were forced to unwind its purchase of Instagram and WhatsApp, it would offer the first real opportunity in over a decade for a serious competitor to their product.”

President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a brief one-on-one discussion inside St. Peter’s Basilica on April 26 before convening with other leaders to attend Pope Francis’s funeral.

The conversation took place before the funeral Mass began, at a point in the morning when the Vatican’s vast basilica was shut to allow world leaders and diplomats to visit the pontiff’s closed coffin and pay their respects.

Pictures showing Trump and Zelenskyy seated in a corner as if they just pulled up a couple of chairs, hunched over deep in discussion, were shared across social media.

This was the first face-to-face encounter between Trump and Zelenskyy since their heated meeting in the Oval Office in February that ended with Zelenskyy being asked to leave.

Many of those who shared it commented on the significance of their meeting place, including Trump’s National Security Advisor, Michael Waltz, who said, “Nothing like some tough diplomacy in one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

The White House later confirmed that the sitdown took place.

Trump hopes to avoid war with Iran, the secretary of state said, but is determined to prevent Tehran from getting nuclear weapons.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on April 23 that President Donald Trump remains committed to preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, but would prefer to do so through diplomacy rather than military action.

Speaking in an
interview with The Free Press, Rubio said the United States is willing to support Iran’s right to a civilian nuclear energy program, so long as it gives up domestic uranium enrichment—a process that can be used to produce weapons-grade material.

“If Iran wants a civil nuclear program, they can have one, just like many other countries in the world have one, meaning they can import enriched material,” Rubio said. “But if they insist on enriching uranium themselves, then they will be the only country in the world that ‘doesn’t have a weapons program’ but is enriching. I think that’s problematic.”

Rubio said that the United States is not seeking armed conflict with Tehran but that Trump “reserves every right” to act militarily if diplomacy fails.

“We do not want to see war. This is not a president that campaigned on starting wars,“ Rubio said. ”And as he said very clearly, Iran is not going to have a nuclear weapon and he reserves every right to prevent that from happening, but he would prefer it not happen. He would prefer that there not be a need to resort to military force.”

Iranian officials have shown a willingness to talk, Rubio said, adding that the United States is going to give a peaceful resolution “every opportunity to succeed.”

The sun rose high over a packed St. Peter’s Square on the morning of April 26 as more than a quarter of a million people gathered together from all walks of life, from the humble faithful to world leaders, for the funeral of Pope Francis.

He was a pope among the people, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals, said in his homily in Italian. He was attentive to the signs of the times and to the anxieties, sufferings, and hopes of this time of globalization.

The funeral began at 10 a.m. local time, 4 a.m. ET, just outside St. Peter’s Basilica. Cardinal Re was accompanied by various cardinals, patriarchs, and bishops.

An altar was placed just outside the doors of the iconic basilica, with seating areas for Cardinals and dignitaries placed on both sides. At the base of the parvis, a grid of white squares of seated clergy extended in the square to the looker’s left side. Nearly every other space in the square and the Via Della Conciliazione was filled with the faithful.

As pilgrims and politicians alike settled into their places, religious sisters led the entire congregation in recitations of the rosary, while the pontiff’s coffin remained in its place inside, tended to by the Swiss Guard, allowing dignitaries a final chance to give an intimate farewell.
