The Brussels attacks have dominated debate in the United States presidential election race and cast a shadow over President Barack Obama's visit to Cuba.

Mr Obama used a speech at Havana's Grand Theatre to directly address Cuban people, declaring they had nothing to fear from the United States.

"I have come here to bury the last remnant of the Cold War in the Americas," he told the crowd, which included Cuban President Raul Castro.

But Mr Obama was also forced to address a more present global threat.

"We will do whatever is necessary to support our friend and ally Belgium," he said.

"This is another reminder that the world must unite.

"We must be together regardless of nationality or race or faith in fighting against the scourge of terrorism."

But back home on American soil, division was the order of the day as presidential candidates clamoured for votes from delegates in primaries in three western states.

Republican challenger Ted Cruz issued a statement calling for law enforcement agencies to patrol Muslim neighbourhoods.

GOP frontrunner Donald Trump turned his thoughts to immigration, particularly from Middle Eastern countries.

"Frankly we're having problems with the Muslims and we're having problems with Muslims coming into the country," he told Fox Business.

"I mean these attacks are not done by Swedish people, that I can tell you."

Mr Trump also suggested authorities should be allowed to do "whatever they have to" to get information from terror suspects, adding he would allow waterboarding and other tough interrogation techniques if he were elected president.

Clinton condemns 'dangerous' comments

His comments drew quick condemnation from Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

"To do anything that implies we are at war with an entire religion, with 1.2 or 1.4 billion people is not only wrong, it is dangerous," she said.

"Right here at home we need to be reaching out and including Muslim Americans and communities where they live in our first line of defence."

"We don't need them to feel that if they hear something or see something that they can't report it."

Fearing copycat attacks, US officials stepped up security at airports, train stations and other potential targets across the United States.

However, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson stressed there is no "specific, credible intelligence" pointing to a similar plot in America.
