SEOUL—President Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to step across the boundary dividing North and South Korea, leading to a hastily organized meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and a commitment to restart nuclear talks.
Mr. Trump said Sunday the two nations had agreed to designate nuclear negotiating teams that will begin work over the next several weeks. “We’re not looking for speed. We’re looking to get it right,” he said. “We’re on a very good path. This was a terrific day.”

Rubio calls for legislation to keep Huawei restrictions in place

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) vowed legislative action on Saturday after President Trump said that he would lift a ban on U.S. companies doing business with Chinese tech giant Huawei.
Rubio predicted in a tweet that a veto-proof majority in the Senate would act to reinstate the ban and other restrictions on Huawei if Trump was serious about lifting them.
"If President Trump has in fact bargained away the recent restrictions on #Huawei, then we will have to get those restrictions put back in place through legislation," Rubio tweeted, adding: "And it will pass with a large veto proof majority."

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Sunday called on law enforcement personnel to hold multiple people responsible for the Antifa attack against conservative journalist Andy Ngo.
Ngo was attacked on Saturday while covering Antifa protests in Portland, Oregon. Video footage shows Antifa protestors hitting and kicking Ngo. One even threw a "milkshake" mixed with quick-dry cement at the journalist.
Cruz wanted the mainstream media to report on what happened and not ignore what took place, which typically happens when a conservative is attacked.

There are few remaining survivors of concentration camps. Ed Mosberg is one of them.
And the 93-year-old from Morris Plains, NJ, has no time for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s statements last week, when she called the southern border’s migrant detention centers “concentration camps.”
“She should be removed from Congress. She’s spreading anti-Semitism, hatred and stupidity,” Mosberg told The Post. “The people on the border aren’t forced to be there — they go there on their own will. If someone doesn’t know the difference, either they’re playing stupid or they just don’t care.”

The Heritage Foundation trade economist Tori Whiting says the Trump administration needs to focus on technology transfer, intellectual property protection and structural reforms in China.
When most Americans think of espionage, we think of debonair foreign spies sneaking around military compounds – or bespectacled hackers hammering away at keyboards to steal top-secret information from foreign adversaries.
But there is an entire world of espionage happening right under our noses – at American colleges and universities.
Foreign intelligence services routinely probe computer systems at higher education institutions in the United States – and they also enlist (or implant) students and professors as assets to pass important research and findings to their spy agencies.
WHAT CHINESE SPIES WANT FROM AMERICANS
The main goal isn’t typically to learn any classified state secrets (not in academic espionage anyway). Foreign actors want to steal the important technological advancements, research, and innovations created by our nation's best and brightest researchers and scientists.
In 2013, the Commission on the Theft of Intellectual Property said that this academic espionage made up a significant part of the estimated $300 billion of intellectual property theft America endured that year.
According to the commission, "American scientific innovations and new technologies are tracked and stolen from American universities, national laboratories, private think tanks, and start-up companies, as well as from the major R&D centers of multinational companies."
This is a serious problem for the United States. If this level of academic espionage continues, our ability to lead the world in innovation and new technology could be severely hampered – and the future could be defined by the countries who are stealing our ideas.
One of the biggest offenders is China. Former National Counterintelligence Executive Michelle Van Cleave told the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission on June 9, 2016 that "hundreds of thousands of students and academicians" aid China’s spy operations.

This is a critically important problem that we must solve. When foreign countries steal our research and ideas, American researchers, innovators, and thinkers lose the ability to lead our country into the future. Ultimately, this costs American jobs – and our security.

The likelihood I would ever be invited to serve on a network panel questioning the Democratic presidential candidates is equivalent to an invitation to take the next trip to the moon.
Still, as I tortured myself watching the two "debates," which were not really debates, but mostly a show of memorized sound bites, I thought of unasked questions that ought to have been put to them all.
Question 1: Some of you have, or had, the power to change many of the things you now say are wrong with America. Why didn’t you?

So, the first circus is over. And one thing is clear: Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) won the second debate, showing that former Vice President Joe Biden has not cleared the field. So far, Biden is dominating the field with black voters, especially black women. No doubt Harris saw that and she aggressively attacked the VP over his glowing words about segregationist senators he’s worked with and his opposition to busing concerning education. This question had to have been on the docket for debate rehearsal. He must’ve known this was coming—and he flubbed it. This wasn’t just one whiff or two. The entire debate Biden seemed lost. He lacks energy. He didn’t make himself stand out. And for a man who is a titan in the Democratic Party and a former vice president, there should be cause for worry. After the debate, multiple journalists were getting texts that the Biden camp was in full-blown crisis mode after this debate. Of course, the spokesperson for the Biden campaign denied there was a panic, but if this is how things are going to go at the various debate sites, Biden is not going to be the nominee.

That horrifying photo of a dead father and his infant daughter made an instant difference: It prevented left-wing Democrats from blocking emergency funding for the agencies trying to handle the border surge.
Yes, progressives like New York’s own Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were holding humanitarian funding hostage: Even with children sleeping on concrete floors, with a near-total lack of adult supervision, they refused to OK new money unless it came with added restrictions on how agencies deal with the 100,000-plus Central Americans pouring over the border each month.
That’s right: AOC & Co. denounced the detainment facilities as “concentration camps” even as they blocked funds needed to improve conditions.

The Chinese Communist Party has pressured G20 participants to remain formally silent on the crisis in Hong Kong. President Trump should talk to Xi about it anyway. It is the right thing to do, and America has significant leverage in this context.

The State Department announced new sanctions on Nicolas Ernesto Maduro Guerra Friday afternoon, the son of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro.
"Maduro Guerra is a member of the illegitimate National Constituent Assembly, a body established by his father to undermine the democratically-elected National Assembly and entrench a brutal regime. In 2014, Maduro Guerra was also appointed by his father to head the Corps of Inspectors of the Presidency," the State Department released in a statement. The United States, in addition to dozens of other countries, officially recognizes Juan Guiado as the president of Venezuela. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and White House National Security Advisor John Bolton continue to urge the international community to keep up their pressure on Maduro as the Venezuelan people continue to suffer.

On the second night of the Democratic presidential debate in Miami, NBC moderators asked candidates whether they would support decriminalizing the act of illegally crossing the border into the United States — that is, reducing the seriousness and consequences of illegal entry to the level of a parking ticket.
"Raise your hand if you think it should be a civil offense, rather than a crime, to cross the border without documentation," said NBC's José Díaz-Balart.
All 10 candidates — Biden, Sanders, Buttigieg, Harris, Gillibrand, Bennet, Swalwell, Hickenlooper, Yang, Williamson — raised their hands in approval. That moment was perhaps the Democratic Party's most significant step yet toward embracing a policy of open borders.

The combination of an open border and increased benefits for those in the country illegally could greatly increase the already-high number of border crossers and the inducement for more to come. Trump, at the G-20 summit in Japan, took quick notice. "All Democrats just raised their hands for giving millions of illegal aliens unlimited healthcare," he tweeted. "How about taking care of American Citizens first? That's the end of that race!"
Beyond Miami, other prominent Democrats were also taking up the decriminalization cause Thursday. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters that an immigrant overstaying a visa or violating other immigration laws "shouldn't be a crime." "There's a disagreement that anybody coming across the border is breaking the law," Pelosi said. "Not until there's been a determination as to whether they can stay or not, but just because they are coming across the border, they don't."
All that happened in just a couple of days. There is no indication it will be the end of such proposals in the Democratic race; after all, it is just the first debate in a long race. Castro started something big, and after Wednesday's and Thursday's debates, it might be hard for Democrats to turn back.

Trump's latest Iran sanctions target $200B economic empire of supreme leader

The Trump administration's latest sanctions against Iran reinstate an embargo on some of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's front companies that President Barack Obama lifted as part of the nuclear deal and could further expose the Iranian dictator's corrupt economic empire.
Khamenei oversees a vast network of corporate and financial assets worth $200 billion, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies estimates. Trump signed an executive order this week giving the Treasury Department broad powers to sanction Khamenei, those tied to him, and anyone doing business with him.
"Today's actions follow a series of aggressive behaviors by the Iranian regime in recent weeks, including shooting down of U.S. drones," Trump said Monday. "The supreme leader of Iran is one who ultimately is responsible of the hostile conduct of the regime. He's respected within his country. His office oversees the regime's most brutal instruments including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps."

Huawei employees reportedly worked with Chinese military on AI projects

Huawei Technologies Co. employees worked on at least 10 research projects with Chinese armed forces personnel over the past decade, Bloomberg reported Thursday, collaborations the Chinese company said it was not aware of.
Huawei workers teamed up with members of various organs of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in projects from artificial intelligence to radio communications, Bloomberg said.
“Huawei is not aware of its employees publishing research papers in their individual capacity,” Huawei spokesman Joe Kelly told Reuters, adding the company does not have any research and development collaboration or partnerships with PLA-affiliated institutions.
“Huawei only develops and produces communications products that conform to civil standards worldwide, and does not customize R&D products for the military.”
Huawei has come under mounting scrutiny for over a year, led by US allegations that “back doors” in its routers, switches and other gear could allow China to spy on US communications.

A U.S. judge found three unnamed Chinese banks to be in contempt of court in April, according to recently unsealed documents from the District Court for the District of Columbia. This could add a dangerous new element to the trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.

The real concentration camps are in China — but US leaders are silent

Given the recent fight over whether US refugee-detention centers are “concentration camps,” the Trump administration might want to borrow a page from the Chinese and simply call them “vocational-skills-education-training centers.” That way, no one would really care at all.
That’s what the Chinese call their gulag archipelago of internment and re-education camps in Xinjiang province, where an estimated 1 million ethnic Uighurs and other Turkic people are being held. The Uighurs are a traditionally Muslim minority, and Beijing says they pose a major threat because of Islamic terrorism. The reality is that the Chinese fear separatist movements, Islamic or otherwise, in a resource-rich region three times the size of France.
As a result, the regime is pursuing the largest attempt at cultural annihilation in the 21st century. Religion is heavily regulated throughout China, but it is brutally policed in Xinjiang.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio says presidential hopefuls on the Miami debate stage had no answers to the real problems facing the country.
Sen. Marco Rubio was unimpressed with what he heard from half of the Democratic presidential field at Wednesday night's debate, saying their answers on how to solve the border crisis didn't make sense in "English or in Spanish."
Rubio, R-Fla., appeared on "Fox & Friends" Thursday and took particular issue with former Obama HUD Secretary Julian Castro, who argued that crossing the border illegally should not be a crime. The debate also featured former Rep. Beto O'Rourke and Sen. Cory Booker taking turns speaking Spanish.
"They want to decriminalize crossing the border, they're fighting us now on providing more money to take care of people already here, they don't want to do anything about the laws actually luring people here. But they don't have any answers for how to fix it. They don't have any answers in English, they don't have an answer in Spanish," said Rubio.

There are fears over the health of German Chancellor Angela Merkel after distressing footage shows her violently shaking for the second time this month.
The bout came as she met German President Frank- Walter Steinmeier and she can be seen gripping her arms and pursing her lips in a bid to stop the trembling which took place over one minute, but her spokesman says she is fine.
She was offered a glass of water, but did not drink it — despite blaming the previous incident on dehydration.
Mrs Merkel, 64, was attending an indoor farewell ceremony for Justice Minister Katarina Barley, who is leaving to become a politician in the European parliament. The spokesman said she would take part later in the swearing-in of the new justice minister.

Tens of thousands of people once more thronged the streets of Hong Kong at a mass rally on Wednesday to protest government plans to allow extradition to mainland China, the latest action in a mass civil disobedience campaign against the administration of chief executive Carrie Lam.
Chanting "Withdraw the Evil Law!" and "Free Hong Kong! I want genuine democracy!", the protesters gathered in the downtown Central business district ahead of the G20 summit in Japan, in a bid to garner international support for their cause.
A student who gave only his surname Koh said he wanted to stand up for Hong Kong's remaining rights and freedoms.
"I want to speak out while we still have some rights left," Koh said. "If we don't stand up for our rights, then when they're taken away, nobody will have any sympathy for us."
"I think I would regret it later if I didn't stand up and speak out now."
The huge turnout once more caused overcrowding in the city's subway system, and many participants walked several blocks from the next station in order to attend.
The protest saw a return of calls—echoing those of the 2014 Occupy Central movement—for fully democratic elections in the city, with the crowd singing the popular "Les Miserables" hit "Do You Hear the People Sing?" in Cantonese and English, amid the light of thousands of cellphone flashlights.
Tens of thousands of protesters also called for the release of all those arrested following mass protests in recent weeks.
In scenes similar to last Friday's mass action, a large crowd formed outside the headquarters of the Hong Kong police force, amid shouts of "Release them! Release them!"
"I had come to speak out and do what little I can for the people of Hong Kong, regardless of whether it works or not," a protester surnamed Ng told RFA at the main protest in Edinburgh Place.
