Analysis: Despite Dems' Petulant Scowling, Trump's SOTU Was Strong and Effective

President Trump's State of the Union Address was, for the most part, quite conservative -- and, I suspect, quite effective with viewers. Whether it will have any lasting impact remains to be seen, but I'd be surprised, given the hyperdrive pace of today's news cycles and the president's uncanny ability to step on his own message. Let's start with some highlights:
(1) Trump's defense of tax reform. As I wrote on Tuesday morning, the president had a precious opportunity to sell his top legislative achievement to a populace that's been warming to the policy, but still has doubts (some rooted in flagrant misinformation). He delivered an extended and detailed rebuttal to the critics, highlighting achievements already realized, and reminding taxpayers that their effective pay raises (80 percent of Americans will receive tax cuts) will start arriving in their paychecks soon. A home run.
(2) On immigration, Trump laid out his four-pronged DACA compromise offer to Democrats pretty succinctly and methodically. It's not unreasonable, and it's hardly the bigoted affront that the Left's race-baiters are claiming:

Watching and listening to President Trump’s first State of the Union address Tuesday night, I was struck by how wide-ranging and visionary it was. I was also struck by how deeply the Democrats reject everything uttered by President Trump – even when it is something they believe in and support.
The president’s guests were emotionally powerful as examples of his values and the values in which most Americans believe. The synergistic impact of their personal stories being tied into the larger principles of the speech was inspiring. They were not only emotional guests. They were didactic guests, whose stories taught us something about ourselves and the values that have made America both unique and great.
Beyond these moving personal stories, this speech was a powerful collection of reform proposals that outlined a vision for a successful America which, as the president said, has to involve success for all Americans. His theme of making America great again for all Americans is one of the keys to what makes President Trump is so different.

VENETIA, Pa. — Tony and Michelle Ripepi always make sure their children are civically engaged, from following local and national elections to watching big decisions, speeches and moments coming from the White House.
“We make it a point to discuss current events so that they are aware of what is going on in the world, so for us, watching the State of the Union address given by any president is a family affair,” Michelle said.
Tuesday evening was no different as the couple sat in their Pennsylvania living room with their children, Lillie, Natalie, Tony and John.

“Whoever wrote this speech deserves a promotion,” she said.
“This speech is about us, there were no mentions of ‘I’ or ‘me.’ All he did was talking about taking us to a better place, it was aspirational, compassionate and strong,” she said.

The failure of some members of Congress to even show up for President Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night is a flat-out embarrassment. It is a signal to the world that some among us lack the maturity to listen to each other.
I find it ironic that those who preach tolerance the loudest are often the least tolerant of all. Obviously, some members of Congress already had their talking points written about President Trump’s speech beforehand.
For eight years in a row, I sat on the House floor and listened to President Obama address the American people. I had vigorously campaigned on behalf of his challengers each cycle. But during that one night in January, we all came together as Americans to listen to our president deliver his State of the Union address.

Justice Department investigating McCabe’s handling of Clinton email probe

The Justice Department’s internal watchdog has been investigating why ex-FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe apparently sat on his hands for about three weeks after Hillary Clinton’s emails were found on Anthony Weiner’s laptop, a new report said Tuesday.
Inspector General Michael Horowitz wants to know why some top FBI officials appeared less than enthusiastic about probing the emails, which were sent by top Clinton aide Huma Abedin, Weiner’s long-suffering wife, The Washington Post reported.
McCabe waited until late October — just weeks before the election and roughly three weeks after they were discovered — to begin scrutinizing the messages, some of which were classified.

Earlier tonight, the House Intelligence Committee voted along party lines to release the damning four-page memo that alleges egregious FISA violations. Some lawmakers said there were similarities to the Soviet KGB, while others said that there could be deep changes coming to the Department of Justice and the FBI as a result. Well, that’s already happened; Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe has been forced out of his position, though he will remain on the payroll until March—his projected retirement. It’s a “terminal leave.”

Part of what makes the United States the greatest country on the face of the planet is our ability to be self-critical and self-correcting. We are different here. As a nation, we are willing to speak truth to power. We understand the need to limit the power of the federal government.
Keeping a vigilant eye on the intrusive powers granted in law enforcement and the intelligence communities is in everyone’s best interest - no matter the administration. Allegations of abuse of the power to spy without cause or to weaponize the vast authority of government for political purposes should concern every American.
A good investigation follows the facts, not political whims. We don’t know exactly what is in the four-page classified summary presented by House Republicans on the Intel Committee, but based on the reaction of the visibly shaken members of Congress who have read the memo, there is cause for great concern — and that is likely an understatement.

Sanctions seem to be taking a toll on North Korea’s economy

North Korea’s military is cutting back on winter drills this year, a sign that punishing global sanctions over its nuclear weapons program may be having an effect on the country’s economy, according to a report Monday.
The military exercises, which usually run from December through March, got started late and aren’t as extensive as before, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials.
The reason could be that the sanctions imposed by the United Nations and the United States to restrict shipments of oil and refined petroleum products are forcing the regime to conserve fuel by cutting back on military training, the report said.

Fresh from its battle to defend the yuan last year, China’s central bank is looking at another: how to rein in its recent fast ascent.
Driven by an unexpectedly prolonged softening of the dollar, the Chinese currency has surged to around its strongest level against the greenback since its surprise devaluation in August 2015. The yuan is now on track for its best monthly performance since April 1980, rising 3% against the dollar so far in January.

President Donald J. Trump returned to Twitter today in typical fashion after a quick trip overseas for the World Economic Forum. President Trump jumped right back into the debate over the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA), accusing Democrats of not actually wanting to solve the problem.
I have offered DACA a wonderful deal, including a doubling in the number of recipients & a twelve year pathway to citizenship, for two reasons: (1) Because the Republicans want to fix a long time terrible problem. (2) To show that Democrats do not want to solve DACA, only use it!

Last September, President Trump rescinded former President Obama’s executive order which shielded more than 800,000 illegal immigrants from deportation because they were brought into the country as children. In an effort to curb executive overreach and shift responsibility back in the hands of the legislative branch, Trump gave Congress a six month ultimatum to fix the DACA issue. If the Senate and the House cannot come up with an agreement that Trump can sign, he will deal with the issue himself. That deadline is quickly approaching in March.

Newly revealed texts between Trump-bashing FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page show the “fix was in” during Hillary Clinton's email probe in 2016, Republican lawmakers say.
The latest batch of text messages between Strzok and Page, who were involved romantically, revealed their private conversations regarding Clinton -- and their concern about being too tough on her during the investigation into her private email system use. The text messages indicate they were wary of a backlash from Clinton if she were to win the presidential election.
“It doesn’t appear anyone wanted her charged,” House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., said on Fox News' “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

A journalist announced last week that he will publish a photograph of then-Illinois Sen. Barack Obama (D) and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan that he took in 2005 at a Congressional Black Caucus meeting, but did not make public because he believed it would have “made a difference” to Obama’s political future. The photographer, Askia Muhammad, told the Trice Edney News Wire that he “gave the picture up at the time and basically swore secrecy.” “But after the nomination was secured and all the way up until the inauguration; then for eight years after he was President, it was kept under cover,” Muhammad said. Asked whether he thought the photo’s release would have affected Obama’s presidential campaign, Muhammad said, “I insist. It absolutely would have made a difference.” Reached by TPM on Thursday, Muhammad said a “staff member” for the CBC contacted him “sort of in a panic” after he took the photo at a caucus meeting in 2005.

In his opening monologue Tuesday night, Sean Hannity said new revelations about anti-Trump bias at the Justice Department and FBI mean "powerful people" need to be investigated, indicted and probably "thrown in jail."
He pointed to anti-Trump text messages exchanged by top FBI officials affiliated with Robert Mueller's Russia probe, which referenced a "secret society" and an "insurance policy" in case Trump won the presidency.
He added that the FBI “failed to preserve” five crucial months of texts between top counterintelligence official Peter Strzok and senior FBI lawyer Lisa Page.
"Given the inherent anti-Trump bias that we have seen from Strzok and Page -- they hated Trump -- and their involvement in almost everything involving the Russia investigation, we must now know what they were talking about during these five critical months," Hannity said. "The FBI should find those messages."

A Michigan judge on Wednesday sentenced Larry Nassar, the longtime former doctor for the U.S. women’s national gymnastics team, to up to 175 years in prison on sexual-abuse charges.

Evidence suggests a massive scandal is brewing at the FBI

During the financial crisis, the federal government bailed out banks it declared “too big to fail.” Fearing their bankruptcy might trigger economic Armageddon, the feds propped them up with taxpayer cash.
Something similar is happening now at the FBI, with the Washington wagons circling the agency to protect it from charges of corruption. This time, the appropriate tag line is “too big to believe.”
Yet each day brings credible reports suggesting there is a massive scandal involving the top ranks of America’s premier law enforcement agency. The reports, which feature talk among agents of a “secret society” and suddenly missing text messages, point to the existence both of a cabal dedicated to defeating Donald Trump in 2016 and of a plan to let Hillary Clinton skate free in the classified email probe.

If either one is true — and I believe both probably are — it would mean FBI leaders betrayed the nation by abusing their powers in a bid to pick the president.
More support for this view involves the FBI’s use of the Russian dossier on Trump that was paid for by the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee. It is almost certain that the FBI used the dossier to get FISA court warrants to spy on Trump associates, meaning it used the opposition research of the party in power to convince a court to let it spy on the candidate of the other party — likely without telling the court of the dossier’s political link.
Even worse, there is growing reason to believe someone in President Barack Obama’s administration turned over classified information about Trump to the Clinton campaign.

Newly released texts between ex-Mueller team members suggest they knew in advance that Clinton would be exonerated.
New text messages allegedly reveal that controversial FBI official Peter Strzok was hesitant about joining Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation team because of his “gut sense” there would be “no big there there.”
Strzok and FBI colleague Lisa Page, who were romantically involved, are under fire for trading anti-Trump messages during the 2016 race.
But Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Ron Johnson, R-Wis., who has received 384 pages of new text messages between them, released a string of messages Tuesday seemingly showing that Strzok wrestled with whether to join the Mueller probe amid doubts about the allegations.
Johnson first discussed the messages during a Tuesday radio interview.

Assad Accused of Another Chemical Weapons Attack

The Syrian government has been accused of carrying out another chemical weapons attack, rescue workers and activists say.
The attack took place in Ghouta, a rebel-held enclave, which is east of Damascus. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 13 people suffered suffocation from the use of chlorine gas.
The White Helments civil defense rescue force also said the same number of civilians, including women and children, were injured in the attack. But other reports put the number slightly higher, at 21 civilians.

Washington must stand up against Beijing’s bullying of US companies

As China’s economic might grows, Beijing is leveraging that power to coerce foreign companies to advance its political narrative and punish them when they step out of line. The Chinese Communist Party’s treatment this month of hotel giant Marriott after a minor Web site error takes the effort to a new and dangerous level.
In Washington, the Chinese government’s overreaction to Marriott listing Taiwan, Tibet, Hong Kong and Macau as “countries” on a questionnaire has sparked alarm. Trump administration officials, lawmakers and experts said the Communist Party is escalating how far it is willing to go in enforcing strict adherence to its political positions among foreign actors.

Although he runs the biggest tech company on the planet, Apple Inc. Chief Executive Tim Cook is concerned by the risk that technology poses to kids.
Speaking at Harlow College in Essex, England, last week, Cook said there should be limits on the use of technology in schools, and said he doesn’t want his young nephew using social media.

A German city that’s become a focal point of right-wing extremists temporarily banned new refugees in an attempt to stem a surge in violence there.
Cottbus, located southeast of Berlin, has been hit with attacks from refugees and far-right extremists since the start of this year.
Brandenburg state police said two Syrian teenage boys were arrested under the suspicion of injuring a German teenager in the face with a knife, the Telegraph reported.
The 16-year-old reportedly sustained injuries that were not life-threatening in what started as a fight between Syrian and German schoolmates.
