Facing criticism for going too soft on sexual harassment, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday called for Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) to resign as the allegations of sexual misconduct have mounted against him.
“The allegations against Congressman Conyers, as we have learned more since Sunday, are serious, disappointing and very credible,” Pelosi said during a briefing in the Capitol, reading from a statement.
“It's very sad. The brave women who have come forward are owed justice. I pray for Congressman Conyers and his family and wish them well. However, Congressman Conyers should resign,” she said.

A FORMER Bosnian Croatian war lord has died in hospital today “after drinking poison” moments after his appeal against a 20-year sentence was turned down, according to Croatian state TV.
Slobodan Praljak drank from a small bottle and yelled “I am not a war criminal!” during the UN verdict at The Hague for his involvement in a campaign to drive Muslims out of Bosnia in the 1990s.

Like most outlets Wednesday morning, NPR is top storying headlines that Matt Lauer has been fired by NBC News over sexual harassment allegations. However, NPR is facing another sexual assault case of its own.
"David Sweeney is no longer on staff," acting senior president of news Chris Turpin has told his staff. Sweeney, NPR's chief news editor, was let go after a string of sexual misconduct claims.

The estimated range of the newest missile is 8,000 miles, an increase compared to the late July ICBM test that had an estimated range of 6,500 miles – still enough to reach Los Angeles or Chicago.

Matt Lauer fired from NBC amid sexual misconduct allegation

Long-time "Today" co-host Matt Lauer has been fired from NBC News.
According to memo from NBC News Chairman Andy Lack read on "Today" early Wednesday, the network received a "detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer."
"It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company's standards," the statement said.
"As a result, we've decided to terminate his employment."

“IT’S like shaking up a bottle of Coke and then taking the lid off.”
Despite Bali’s Mount Agung volcano spewing huge plumes of volcanic ash, and lava, experts warn complacency is the island’s biggest enemy and that the worst is yet to come, including blinding ashfall and flying rocks that spew out of the volcano.
“This is an eruption, this is 100 per cent an eruption,” volcanologist Dr Janine Krippner told news.com.au.
“Lava is coming out of the volcano, there’s definitely enough to cause trouble. This can get much worse, you can’t outrun this.”

North Korea on Wednesday fired an unidentified ballistic missile in the middle of the night local time, a U.S. official has confirmed to Fox News.
The missile "flew eastward from the vicinity of Pyongyang" toward the Sea of Japan, South Korean military officials said, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency.
The U.S. and its allies have been on alert since North Korea tested intercontinental missiles in the Pacific near Japan and Guam, a highly strategic U.S. territory.

NORTH Korea has launched a ballistic missile from an area north of the capital Pyongyang, South Korea’s official news agency reports.
The unidentified missile shot from Pyongsong, South Pyongan Province, flew into the East Sea about 3.17am Wednesday local time, South Korea’s military chiefs told Yonhap.
There are few details about the launch as yet.
South Korea and US authorities are still analysing the missile’s flight distance and trajectory.

U.S. and South Korean authorities used a bullhorn to reprimand North Korea regarding several armistice violations, with at least one U.S. Navy official reportedly standing in the rain at the Demilitarized Zone to admonish Kim Jong Un's regime that "this sort of thing should never occur again."
The violations occurred after several of the Hermit Kingdom's soldiers chased a comrade who was defecting to South Korea earlier this month.

It’s been a tough era for Davos Man, the personification of the great and the good who meet in the World Economic Forum in that Swiss ski resort every January. The rebukes just keep coming: the Euro crisis, Brexit, Trump, and now, and once again unexpectedly, Angela Merkel’s failure to form a German government.
For a dozen years, European elites who have recoiled from former President George W. Bush and swooned over former President Barack Obama have regarded Merkel as a rock-solid firmament of good sense. Her considerable internal political skills, her seeming unflappability, her upholding of conventional wisdoms, both well- and ill-founded, have made her a favorite at Davos.

This Thanksgiving I find myself thankful for something that is roiling our country. I am glad at what has happened with the recent, much-discussed and continuing sexual-harassment revelations and responses. To repeat the obvious, it is a watershed event, which is something you can lose sight of when you’re in the middle of it. To repeat the obvious again, journalists broke the back of the scandal when they broke the code on how to report it. For a quarter century we had been stuck in the He Said/She Said. Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas gave their testimonies, each offered witnesses, and the fair minded did their best with the evidence at hand while sorting through all the swirling political agendas. In the end I believed Mr. Thomas. But nobody knows, or rather only two people do.
What happened during the past two years, and very much in the past few months, is that reporters and news organizations committed serious resources to unearthing numbers and patterns. Deep reporting found not one or two victims of an abuser but, in one case, that of Bill Cosby, at least 35. So that was the numbers. The testimony of the women who went on the record, named and unnamed, revealed patterns: the open bathrobe, the running shower, the “Let’s change our meeting from the restaurant to my room/your apartment/my guesthouse.” Once you, as a fair-minded reader, saw the numbers and patterns, and once you saw them in a lengthy, judicious, careful narrative, you knew who was telling the truth. You knew what was true. Knowing was appalling and sometimes shocking, but it also came as a kind of relief.
Once predators, who are almost always repeat offenders, understood the new way of reporting such stories, they understood something else: They weren’t going to get away with it anymore. They’d never known that. And they were going to pay a price, probably in their careers. They’d never known that, either.
Why did this happen now? It was going to happen at some point: Sexual harassment is fairly endemic. Quinnipiac University released a poll this week showing 60 percent of American women voters say they’ve experienced it. Maybe the difference now is that the Clintons are gone—more on that in a moment. And maybe there’s something in this: Sexual harassment, at least judging by the testimony of recent accusers, has gotten weirder, stranger, more brutish. The political director of a network news organization invites you to his office, trains his eyes on you and masturbates as you tell him about your ambitions? The Hollywood producer hires an army of foreign goons to spy on you and shut you up? It has gotten weird out there. These stories were going to blow up at some point.

North Korean soldier’s medical report exposes the regime’s evil

‘Oh” is all that’s known for the name of the North Korean soldier whose escape to South Korea became a viral video. But we do have a bit more to the story.
Shots hit the 24-year-old five times in the lungs and intestines as he ran to freedom in the heavily guarded border zone. He’s now recovering in intensive care.

Blast in Chinese port city results in deaths, injuries

At least two people were killed and at least 30 people were injured Sunday after an explosion in a port city near Shanghai, China.
The cause of the blast, which occurred in Ningbo -- one of China's busiest ports -- was still under investigation, government and media reports said.
China's official Xinhua News Agency claimed the explosion happened in a factory.

Holocaust survivor: I'm giving $1 million to help wounded American veterans, to express my thanks

At 83 years old, I am one of the few remaining Holocaust survivors – thanks to the American troops who rescued me in what seems like a lifetime ago.
Since World War II, I’ve felt a deep connection to American troops for saving my life – a feeling that resurfaces every year on Veterans Day and throughout the holiday giving season.
And so this year I’m saying “thank you” to the American soldiers of the 1940s by donating $1 million to organizations serving wounded American veterans today.
My donation to the Wounded Warrior Project and the Services for Armed Forces program of the American Red Cross is my way of giving back, thanking previous generations of warriors for helping me. I hope this inspires others to give back as well.
Even though more than 70 years have passed since my rescue, it’s not too late to give back. That’s a lesson I hope the next generation recognizes, because it’s all too easy to let procrastination give way to inaction. But action is what brings hope to those who need it.

I have met many American people who I am lucky enough to call my friends. First, Americans saved us. Then decades later, they welcomed us.

Attack on Egyptian mosque targets civilization itself

Friday’s bloodthirsty attack on a mosque in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula during noontime prayers was a crime against all humanity. It wasn’t “just” an attack on Muslims. It was an attack on all of us who believe in civilization, tolerance and decency. At least 235 peaceful worshippers died, with more than 100 wounded.
One is tempted to call it the work of beasts, but no creature in the animal kingdom behaves with such avid, calculated cruelty.
Yet, the attack can be explained — though the explanation only makes it worse.

Americans have been buried in the last six weeks by a blizzard of reports of sexual harassment, assault, misconduct and malfeasance from our politicians, journalists and Hollywood glitterati.
In the last week alone, we’ve seen a picture of Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., during his pre-senatorial days placing his hands over a sleeping woman’s breasts; the suspension of New York Times journalist Glenn Thrush for allegedly harassing young female journalists; and eight women telling the Washington Post that fabled television host Charlie Rose had made unwanted sexual advances ranging from groping to lewd phone calls. That follows on the heels of allegations of child molestation against Alabama Senate Republican nominee Roy Moore, confirmed accusations of unwanted exposure from comedian Louis C.K. and allegations of sexual assault against Russell Simmons. Every day, it seems, a new member of the cultural aristocracy comes tumbling down.
What’s behind all of it? Why did it take so long for this avalanche to start? And what does it tell us about the culture we’ve built?

President Donald Trump gave thanks to U.S. troops in a video call from his luxury resort Mar-a-Lago on Thanksgiving and praised them for all the progress they’ve made.
“We totally support you. In fact, we love you,” Trump said Thursday morning, according to The Washington Examiner. “We really do, we love you.”
“Everybody’s talking about the progress you’ve made in the last few months since I opened it up,” he added. “We opened it up to go ahead, we’re gonna fight to win. We’re not fighting anymore to just walk around, we’re fighting to win.”
