You also have to see Russia's actions as one of incredible weakness. It had to invade Crimea to retain its only access to the med, via its base in the Black Sea. A longstanding ally in Ukraine was tipped to the west and the EU. In Syria he was forced to prop up Assad to retain any influence anywhere in the Middle East.

But where does he go from here. He has an aging population, an economy going under? His allies consist of Syria, Iran, Turkey flirting with his to try to make the west jealous and a dubious relationship with China.

Energy prices are in the tank, likely to never recover, and he is essentially in a conflict with the two major economies in the world, US and the EU.

His deals with china are driven by weakness, with a vast Chinese economy and population set to dominate in Central Asia.

So far from a Putin power play in which you can see Obama has lost what you are seeing is moves of tactical desperation - to make up for a failing strategy.
