US Election 2012: Mitt Romney makes last dash for the White House

Republican challenger Mitt Romney began a frenetic race to a series of crucial swing states on Monday, delivering his final speeches to voters on the last day of an extraordinarily close race for the White House.

After a long, bitter and expensive campaign, national polls show United States President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney are in a race too close to call ahead of Tuesday's election.

With Obama slightly leading in the polls, Romney hit the campaign trail hard, visiting four swing states on Monday.

"Tomorrow we begin a new tomorrow. Tomorrow we begin a better tomorrow. This nation is going to begin to change for the better tomorrow. Your work is making a difference. The people of the world are watching. The people of America are watching," Romney told a campaign rally in Sanford, Florida.

The close margins in state and national polls suggested the possibility of a cliffhanger, that could be decided by the party that is most effective at getting voters to the polls.

"Now we are close, the door to a brighter future is open, it's waiting for us. I need your vote, I need your help," Romney told Florida voters.

Romney will also be visiting Virginia, where polls show he is slightly ahead or tied, along with Ohio before concluding in New Hampshire, where he launched his presidential run last year.

The only state scheduled to get a last-day visit from both candidates is Ohio, the most critical of the remaining battlegrounds – particularly for Romney.

The former Massachusetts governor has few paths to victory if he cannot win in Ohio, where Obama has kept a small but steady lead in polls for months.

Romney, who would be the first Mormon president, has centred his campaign pitch on his own experience as a business leader who would be well equipped to boost the US economy.
