Big Tech CEOs slammed by both sides of aisle during contentious House hearing
Monopolistic companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, Apple and others have become far too powerful. They thwart competition and abuse their power, whether it's by failing to protect users' privacy and data or by controlling one of our most basic freedom — free speech — in hopes of influencing, if not, swaying elections.
These actions warrant congressional intervention, especially given Silicon Valley's well-known political bias against conservatives — including the president of the United States of America. President Trump's tweets are routinely "fact-checked" and censored, for example, while his political opponents are not.
This rigged system has far-reaching consequences that, among other things, shape public opinion and culture and taint America's standing in the world, while diminishing our collective rights.

As bad as the New York Times can be right now, that will be nothing compared to how truly miserable it can become if it institutes the asinine race quotas and other demands that the paper's worker union is demanding.
In a series of tweets on Friday, the News Guild of New York, representing the New York Times editorial staff, laid out several race-based items for the paper's leadership to start working on.
Among them were for the company's workforce demographics to reflect that of New York City (race quotas); for each stage of the hiring process for a new position to have at least 50% of the candidates be minorities (race quotas); and for the establishment of "mentorship programs" that create a track for minorities to move from junior positions to more senior ones (race quotas).
Oh, and the union demands that all articles be given "sensitivity reads," the purpose of which would be to censor and edit content that offends or has the potential to offend minorities.

Yesterday, Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein said that China is “growing into a respectable nation.” Her comments weren’t made in a vacuum, and they serve as a reminder of the years of failure in addressing China that have led to our present situation.
Feinstein has served in the Senate since 1992, and her favorable view of China goes all the way back to when she was mayor of San Francisco in the 1980s. The Los Angeles Times reported in 1997 that Feinstein was “one of the staunchest proponents of closer U.S. relations with China” while she and her husband maintained major financial ties to the country.
Feinstein’s long history of shilling for China is well documented, and she’s not alone. Earlier this month, former Sen. Max Baucus attacked critics of China on Chinese state television, saying, “I think the U.S. has been hypercritical of China … sometimes without any proof.” Baucus has compared China's critics to McCarthyism in the past.
Baucus served as a senator for 36 years until he was appointed in 2014 to become the ambassador to, you guessed it, China. Baucus, like Feinstein, had been pushing to normalize trade relations with China for years. And the man who helped push Baucus toward his ambassadorship? It was none other than Joe Biden.

With leaders such as Biden, Feinstein, and Baucus, it’s clear why we’re now facing an increasingly aggressive and antagonistic China. Decades of failed leadership have passed this problem down, and those leaders are still around trying to drive us farther down this road.

While much of the international community has focused on abuses against the Uighur Muslims in the Chinese province of Xingang, the human rights horrors against Buddhists in Tibet – a decades-long conflict -- have dropped from the limelight.
"Tibet is one of the worst human rights crises in the world today. More than 150 Tibetans have self-immolated since 2009, lighting their own bodies on fire to protest China's oppression," Bhuchung K. Tsering, vice president of the International Campaign for Tibet, told Fox News.
"Tibetan schools are forced to teach students in Chinese as the primary language rather than Tibetan. And just recently, Chinese authorities ordered Tibetans to remove their beautiful prayer flags from villages and hilltops. Living under the repressive rule of the Chinese Communist Party, Tibetans have virtually no freedom of religion, freedom of speech, or any of the other basic freedoms that no government has the right to take away," Tsering explained.
U.S. watchdog Freedom House lists Tibet as the second-least-free country in the world, behind only Syria.
Concerns over the future of Tibet flared further this week after the Chinese government announced it was shuttering the U.S. Chengdu Consulate, which served the Tibet and other Tibet-populated surrounding regions. The retaliatory move came just days after Washington ordered the Chinese consulate in Houston closed over espionage concerns.
However, foreign policy analysts underscore that closing the Chengdu location was a way to further remove the U.S. from monitoring alleged abuses in Tibet.

Believe it or not, there are. Some of the people who say that may actually believe it and we're giving them the benefit of the doubt. The liberal mom who lives next door to you, for example. She is probably entirely sincere when she lectures you about the scourge of police brutality, she means it. She has no idea BLM is about anything else.
We're not judging, and that's not surprising. Most Americans are nice people. They're literal and ingenuous. They tend to take claims at face value because they want to believe the best.

As the war on conservative voices online reaches fever pitch in the run-up to November’s presidential election, Silicon Valley’s oligarchy finally was called to account Wednesday on Capitol Hill.
“Big Tech is out to get conservatives” Ohio Republican Jim Jordan told the bosses of Google, Facebook, Amazon and Apple. “That’s not a suspicion, that’s not a hunch. That’s a fact.”
Then he laid out a litany of censorship atrocities in a blistering opening statement before the congressional antitrust panel.
They included:
* Google removing conservative Web site Breitbart from its search results.
* Amazon’s video site Twitch suspending President Trump’s account “after he raises concerns about defunding the police.”
* Facebook removing posts from Trump’s re-election campaign.
* Amazon temporarily banning an e-book critical of coronavirus lockdowns written by conservative commentator Alex Berenson.
* Amazon charity site Amazon Smile “won’t let you give to the [pro-life, pro-marriage] Family Research Council . . . but you can give to Planned Parenthood.”
* Facebook admitting to banning pro-life advertisements in 2018 during Ireland’s abortion referendum.
* Former Facebook employees admitting to Gizmodo that the social-media behemoth routinely suppresses conservative views.
* Google and YouTube censoring content that conflicts with World Health Organization recommendations.

A new Pew Research Center survey found over three-quarters of American adults blame the Chinese government for the global spread of the coronavirus and over 60 percent of respondents said the country has done a poor job handling the aftermath of the outbreak.
The survey, which polled 1,003 individuals and was conducted from June 16 to July 14, showed 73 percent of U.S. adults have an unfavorable view of the country, which marks the most negative rating in the 15 years that Pew Research Center has been conducting polling on the subject, according to a press release.
Negative views toward China have also increased by 7 percentage points over the last four months alone and have gone up 26 points since 2018.
The survey claimed 83 percent of Republicans have an unfavorable view of China compared to 68 percent of Democrats. Republicans are also more likely to publicly say they have a very unfavorable view towards China at 54 percent, versus only 35 percent Democrats.
Around 64 percent of those surveyed said China has done a poor job dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak and 78 percent place "a great deal or fair amount of blame for the global spread of the coronavirus on the Chinese government’s initial handling of the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan."
By a more than two-to-one margin, 68 percent of Americans said the nation's economic ties to China are bad, while a quarter said they are "very bad."

Big Tech leaders face off with members of Congress
When the leaders of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google testified via video before a House subcommittee Wednesday, hostile lawmakers demanded they explain their dominant market positions, monopoly power, and business practices that harm consumers, competitors and small businesses.
The hearing became a bipartisan beat-down that left the heads of the world’s biggest tech companies bloodied but unbowed, as both Democrats and Republicans took turns accusing the companies of business behavior bordering on the unlawful or possibly even crossing the line into illegality.
The case against Big Tech is indeed compelling. But it is also complicated.
BIG TECH BACKLASH: APPLE, GOOGLE, FACEBOOK, AMAZON CEOS GRILLED ON CAPITOL HILL
Every passing week unveils more wrongdoing by the tech giants. It is clear they have usurped our data, disrespected our privacy, deceived the government, defied international law and generally behaved badly.
It’s also clear that the concentration of power by these companies is inconsistent with democracy. We should be wary of companies with such dominance that they become akin to private governments that thrive from such a concentration of power.
Facing a barrage of tough questions and well-researched allegations, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Tim Cook of Apple, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Sundar Pichai of Google did their best to remain courteous and contrite. But some of their answers appeared to be inconsistent with reputable reports of aggressive and predatory business practices by their companies.
The leaders of the tech giants were sometimes evasive as they gave canned responses, shoulder shrugs and feigned unfamiliarity with specific situations. Some of these responses were hard to believe. You would expect the heads of the companies to be aware of the problems raised by lawmakers.
This was the sixth in a series of hearings convened by the House Judiciary Committee’s Antitrust Subcommittee on the topic of Online Platforms and Market Power.

Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., criticized Google on Wednesday for connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), following a House subcommittee hearing on antitrust with America's big tech CEOs.
“If Google wants to cozy up to Communist China, Sundar Pichai must answer for the atrocities committed by the Chinese Communist Party," he told Fox News after Pichai, Amazon's Jeff Bezos, Apple's Tim Cook, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg all testified before Congress.
Buck has been an outspoken critic of the CCP's tactics and introduced legislation in the House on Wednesday based on Sen. Josh Hawley's "Slave-Free Business Certification Act," which attempts to hold U.S. companies accountable for any use of forced labor throughout the supply chain.
In addition to discovering troubling ties between big tech companies and the CCP, there was a consensus among both parties that the hearing revealed nefarious efforts to stifle competition within the free market, Buck added.
"It's absolutely clear that these platforms are using their position to stifle innovation and you hear it from both sides of the aisle," he continued. "You hear the CEOs unable to speak to the specific examples that they are being faced with, so it was very informative."
Buck also addressed the notion that anti-competitive practices can lead to political bias and the censorship of certain materials on the web, specifically with regard to news and media outlets.

In a virtual testimony before congress Wednesday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai was grilled by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., over allegations of advancing China’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities after refusing to work with the U.S. military.
Google pulled out of an AI contract with the Department of Defense (DOD) in June 2018 after thousands of employees signed a petition addressed to Pichai, demanding that the company cease all involvement with the program known as Project Maven.
Project Maven was an AI effort to study imagery that could lead to improved technology surrounding drone strikes during open combat. Google cited concerns over ethical principles surrounding AI.

Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed ambivalence about the success of a controversial Chinese company labeled a national security threat during a high-stakes appearance before Congress.
"We also know that customers have a lot of choices and that our products face fierce competition," Cook told House lawmakers Wednesday. "Companies like Samsung, LG, Huawei, and Google have built successful businesses with different approaches. We're OK with that. Our goal is the best, not the most."
Cook's opening statement largely echoed his written prepared remarks.
Federal agencies were banned last August from purchasing telecommunications products, surveillance equipment, or any other products or services from Huawei and four other Chinese companies after they were linked to the Chinese Communist Party and identified as possible platforms for data theft or Chinese government spying.
The Trump administration is working on extending the prohibition to any company doing business with Huawei, with the new regulations expected to be implemented next month.

Big Tech is “out to get” conservatives, Rep. Jim Jordan said in explosive opening remarks Wednesday as the CEOs of companies including Facebook and Amazon faced a Congressional grilling.
“I’ll just cut to the chase: Big Tech is out to get conservatives,” said the Ohio Republican with trademark zeal. “That’s not a suspicion, that’s not a hunch. That’s a fact.”
Jordan rattled off a series of double-standards in which the online voices of conservatives, including President Trump, have been silenced, while others have not been similarly restricted.
“The power these companies have to impact what happens during the election … [and] what American citizens get to see prior to their voting is pretty darn important,” said Jordan.

The hearing tested lawmakers’ ability to ask questions that reflect an understanding of how Big Tech operates. Previous high-profile hearings involving tech companies have exposed the somewhat limited grasp of Washington politicians of how the internet and technology work.
It also promised to be a highly partisan affair, with Republicans expected to double-down on accusations of anti-conservative bias by tech giants, according to a Politico report.
Before Cicilline kicked off the 1 p.m. hearing, Trump, a frequent critic of Big Tech, tweeted that lawmakers must bring about change — or he would do it himself.
“If Congress doesn’t bring fairness to Big Tech, which they should have done years ago, I will do it myself with Executive Orders,” he wrote. “In Washington, it has been ALL TALK and NO ACTION for years, and the people of our Country are sick and tired of it!”

So much going on right now in the news. New developments from every direction, much of it seems unrelated. A lot of it's shocking. Here's the way to understand it.
In an election year, everything significant that happens is about the election. So all of these developments are in fact related, and here's the core question in every election. Who is up and who is down?
As of tonight, the president is down double digits in the polls and there's not much question about why that is. Americans are miserable. They're stuck at home. They are fearful. Millions of them don't have jobs.

Democrats self-destruct at House hearing with Attorney General Bill Barr
If it’s a “hearing,” Attorney General Bill Barr asked with an irked tongue in cheek, “aren’t I the one who’s supposed to be heard?”
His frustration was more than justified. Judiciary Committee chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., and the other Democrats who control the House demanded for months that Barr come to a “hearing” and “testify.” But of course, it wasn’t anything like an actual hearing, and they didn’t want him to testify — as in actually answer questions.
The session was a coveted election-year opportunity for Democrats to berate the attorney general of the United States in five-minute installments, accusing Barr of corruption, perjury, violating his oath, betraying the Constitution — at one point, even of killing thousands of COVID-19 victims (apparently, by being attorney general during a pandemic).

Especially at the beginning of the hearing, Barr easily parried the hostile questions — soliloquies with question-marks at the end. He picked apart their misstatements and disingenuous premises, and answered with aplomb.
Democrats thus dropped the threadbare pretense that this was a hearing. In the main, the rest of the afternoon was devoted to raging, mock-anguished perorations about how Trump is a dictator and how Barr is helping him destroy our democracy.

Some days, it just feels like we’re doomed. This is one of those days. And not simply because this should have been an important oversight hearing featuring an important witness — one whom a serious committee would have wanted both to hear out and to challenge. It is, after all, the nature of the Justice Department’s work that there are many tough judgment calls; no one gets them all right.
What happened on Capitol Hill Tuesday was a debacle to despair over because Democrats do not act this way because they are preternaturally rude. They act this way because their voters expect and demand that they act this way.

The Trump administration is preparing to order China to sharply reduce the number of diplomats posted in the United States to levels equal to the number of American diplomats stationed in China, senior State Department officials said.
The action seeks in part to reduce the burden on FBI counterintelligence agents, who in recent months have devoted 2,000 special agents to catching Chinese spies and their agents, the senior official said. FBI Director Christopher A. Wray said recently that the bureau is opening a new Chinese-related case on average every 10 hours.
“By Aug. 1, we want reciprocal levels and access” for U.S. diplomats abroad, said one senior U.S. official, who spoke on background in advance of the formal announcement expected this week.

Declassified Peter Strzok document raises new questions about origins of Russia probe
Lying is pathology. Habitual liars do so compulsively, often to benefit themselves. The same is true of corrupt people. They seek to prosper from their corruption.
For proof, look no further than the venal characters fired from the FBI after inventing the Trump-Russia collusion hoax — Director James Comey, Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, and Agent Peter Strzok.
All three were fired for their abuse of power, corrupt acts, and suspected lies. Undaunted, they now profit financially from their misdeeds.
FORMER FBI AGENT STRZOK TO RELEASE BOOK ON RUSSIA, TRUMP BEFORE ELECTION
Strzok is the latest to capitalize on his infamy. He is set to release a book in September titled “Compromised: Counterintelligence and the Threat of Donald J. Trump.” The irony should be lost on no one. Can you think of anyone more compromised than the notorious and smug Strzok?

Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz informed Congress that Strzok’s texts “clearly showed a biased state of mind” that was “antithetical to the core values of the FBI.”
In the conclusion of his 500-page report, Horowitz stated that Strzok’s bias was so severe that it “implies a willingness to take official action to impact a presidential candidate’s electoral process.”
Attorney General William Barr called Strzok’s bias “appalling.”

The history of Comey’s egocentric and imperious tenure at the FBI is notable only for deceit, secrecy, corruption and abuse of power.

But the wreckage that Comey wrought will take years to repair. As FBI director, he was a cancerous tumor. He betrayed the public trust. As a private citizen, he continues to spin his web of deceit while exalting his status as a martyr. He is a monument to vanity.
It is outrageous that Comey, McCabe, and Strzok are allowed to profit from corrupt acts. Americans should reject this pathology of lies.

Australia aligns with US to counter Chinese economic and military coercion

Australian defense and foreign ministers declared in Washington Tuesday that their country stands with the United States to resist China’s coercive economic and military actions in the Indo-Pacific, a show of force in the U.S. effort to gather Pacific allies to counter China’s aggressive behavior.
“We both want the same kind of region,” Foreign Minister Marise Payne told members of the media at a socially distanced State Department briefing alongside the Australian defense minister, U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
“We want it to be secure, we want it to be stable, we want it to be free, we want it to be prosperous,” she added.
That prosperity has much to do with strengthening defense relationships as countering Chinese malign influence, the leaders said.
Agreements were announced for a working group to study Chinese disinformation while the partners condemned Chinese tech dominance and violations of civil rights in Hong Kong.
“Today, we reaffirm the importance of working with partners to strengthen sovereignty and also resilience to coercion,” said Australian Defense Minister Linda Reynolds, noting forthcoming scientific defense cooperation in the area of hypersonics, electronic warfare, and space-based capabilities.

Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz introduces legislation to allow cities to be sued and federal funds to be denied over the riots.
Democratic politicians should be held accountable for “letting their cities burn,” Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz told “America’s Newsroom” on Tuesday.
Cruz made the comment following violent protests in several cities. On Saturday, more than half a dozen U.S. cities experienced rioting and lawlessness – with the mayhem including damage to federal buildings and local police precincts, and a fatal shooting in Austin, Texas.
Similar protests and violent demonstrations have been seen across the country following the death of George Floyd, a Black man in Minnesota who died while in police custody. A video of the May 25 encounter with police officers showed a White officer putting his knee on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes.
Cruz also reacted on Tuesday to a Wall Street Journal editorial published Monday titled, "A Weekend of Urban Anarchy.”
“The weekend’s events were a deliberate assault on public and private property, law enforcement, and public order,” the editorial board wrote. “Lawlessness begets lawlessness, and in recent weeks we’ve seen reports of vigilantes and far-right activists joining the melee from Richmond to Philadelphia. Local officials are allowing this disorder to occur, and the more it is indulged the worse it is likely to get.”

A large fleet of some 260 Chinese fishing vessels has been spotted in the waters surrounding the Galápagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador, the country’s navy officials said last week.
The Ecuadorian Navy said it has increasing patrolling to ensure the Chinese ships do not enter the exclusive economic zone around the Galápagos Islands, where 19th-century British explorer Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution, Reuters reported.
“We are on alert, conducting surveillance, patrolling to avoid an incident such as what happened in 2017,” Ecuador’s Defense Minister Oswaldo Jarrin said at a press conference. Three years ago, a Chinese ship was apprehended in the Galápagos Marine Reserve carrying 300 tons of marine wildlife -- mostly sharks, including the hammerhead, which is near extinction.
